Exploring Southeast Ohios Burr Oak State Park With Hiking Boating Beaching And The Lodge That Almost Wasnt

GLOUSTER, Ohio The lake turned bright pink as the sun set on my day at Burr Oak State Park. I had the perfect vantage point to enjoy it a seat on the second-floor balcony of the parks overnight lodge, a glass of wine in my hand.

Its a spot that almost didnt exist.

Outside Burr Oak State Park

Outside the park, you can enjoy shopping, visiting entertainment joints, visiting historic sites, and exploring the wilderness in the area. You can take a stroll in the Sunday Creek Wildlife Area or take in the scenic views along the Ohio Scenic Byway. The museums, cinema and historic theaters and shops in nearby towns give you a chance to experience city life. While there, you can taste the local cuisine.

Inside Burr Oak State Park

Burr Oak State Park is great for fishing as long as you have an Ohio fishing license and you remember to bring your fishing gear. Crappie and sunfish are common most times of the year, and catfish and carp are catchable during the hot summer months in July and August. Disc golfing and hiking are also common activities most times of the year. The hiking trails are 25 miles long and cover almost all the scenic parts of the park. If you visit in the colder months, you can hunt, ride a horse, or explore the wilderness of the park.

How To Get Toburr Oak State Park

Burr Oak State Park is located off OH-78 near Glouster. From Columbus, drive south on S 3rd St and head toward E State St. Drive to E Broad St via S 4th St all the way to Cleveland Ave. Turn right and merge onto I-71 S. Take Exit 107, drive on I-70 E., take Exit 132, head to OH-13 S and continue to Burr Oak Road, where you’ll find the park.

Burr Oak State Park Backpack Trail

Length: 21.9 miles starting at Burr Oak State Park Nature Center Trailhead.

Difficulty: Hiking is moderately easy with a few steep climbs though no single drop is over 150 feet. Route is generally well marked and easy to follow.

Permit/Fees: There are no permits required to hike, however there are fees required to camp at the authorized campsites. There are nearby options including Wayne National Forests Wildcat Hollow and Burr Oak Cove Campground.

Location: Trailhead From the Nelsonville area, take Ohio Rt 78 east to a left at the Burr Oak State Park entrance, towards the lodge. The Nature Center/Trailhead is at the first intersection. From Athens, take Rt 13 north to Rt 78 east.

Trail Facilities: There is a paved lot, as well as a kiosk with a map at the trailhead. Restrooms are available at the nearby Lodge. The route is blazed with yellow paint. The trail surface is dirt, and there are sections, generally along the upper reaches of the lake, that lay wet well after a rain. Camping is allowed at three developed campgrounds along the trail. Also along the trail are boat docks which have water and restrooms in season two even sport small stores with snacks.
