Red Rocks At Woodland Park

Woodland Park, Colorado

Added by Billy DiMirra

This is a really short hike outside of the Woodland Park area that leads to some really cool Red Rock formations which are full of caves, and different places to climb.

In Woodland Park driving on HWY 24 towards Divide, you will see signs for HWY 67 which is where you’ll need to get to. The Road will fork towards the end of town . Stay right at the fork onto 67. You will then drive about 2 miles until you see a sign that says Red Rocks Campground, and Pikes National Forest. You will take a right into the park, drive for about 1/4 mile, until you reach the power lines overhead. There isn’t really a clear trail marker for where the trail starts, other than those power lines. You can park right there and follow the power lines for 1/10 of a mile and you will arrive at the first set of Rocks. There are a few different sets of rocks that go on through the park too, so theres plenty to explore!

Once you hit the rocks, there are all kinds of nooks and cranny’s for you to explore, none of which are super difficult. The top does have some great views of distant mountains and is appropriate for kids and all skill levels.

Tent Camping For Red Rocks Concert

Will be attending a show over Labor Day weekend and looking for nearby camping, preferably in a Nat’l Forest/Park. I already know about Bear Creek and am assuming that it will be full by the Thursday of that week because of the holiday. Any suggestions on where I could tent camp amongst some trees/scenery with a dog

You have a tough one. I am guessing you have access to a vehicle, so that means it depends on how far away from Red Rocks you want to camp. The problem with Red Rocks is most available park or open space areas fall within Jefferson County. Most of those parks close in the evening and dont have camping. Almost all of the available camping in close is improved State Park or commercial.

Maybe someone else will have a better idea for you.

The closest place to Red Rocks that I know for camping is Cheif Hosa. It is a not in a Nat’l Forest but is a designated campground. It is pretty popular for Red Rocks concert goers and can fill-up.

I’ve heard that this campground is now closed to concert goers. Do you know if the nearby Indian Paintbrush campground in Bear Creek State Park has a gate that they close at night?

When are you actually arriving? It’s such a huge weekend for camping, that unless you arrive relatively early, I would think you may have trouble finding anything.

I’m assuming someone will be staying back at the campsite with the dog????

Look at Golden Gate State Park, but leave the dog at home or in a kennel for that night.
