If you would like to go camping, but not worry about logistics and hauling along the gear, you might consider renting camping equipment. You will find many companies that will rent camping equipment and even set up your campsite for an extra fee.

I found the following companies in Moab that have excellent reviews and come recommended. Although, we have not used any of these services because we drive just a few hours to visit the Moab area.

Canyon Voyages Adventure Company is primarily a rafting outfitter but rents camping equipment

Outdoors Geek has a basic camping package starting at $69 or a family camping package starting at $234.

The Utah Camping Company offers help renting gear and setting up camp. You can rent camping gear, trailers, and tents. It also offers help setting up your campsite for an extra fee.

We stayed in the newer Wingate Campground in our travel trailer in November. The whole park and campgrounds were relatively quiet and we had so much fun camping.

If you are considering a Dead Horse Point State Park camping trip you should try to reserve your campsite before your arrival.

The sites can be reserved ahead of time online or are sometimes available first-come-first-serve during the offseason. This campground is quite popular and can fill up fast, so we suggest you reserve your site online before you arrive.

  • Nightly Rate: Hike-in campsites $35
  • Camp Fee for RV: $40 per night
  • $15 fee for extra vehicles
  • In the offseason campsites might be available same day
  • Maximum of eight people per site
  • Maximum RV length 56 feet
  • Reservations can be made here

Wingate and Kayenta Campgrounds are have developed campsites for tents and RVs. Each campground also has yurt for rent.

Each campsite in both campgrounds has a tent pad, fire pit, picnic table, shelter, food box, and electrical outlets. Restroom facilities are a short walk from the campsites and have running water for handwashing. Showers are not available due to the lack of water in the park.

Pets are welcome but must be leashed and supervised. Unattended pets are not allowed for their safety and the comfort of other campers.

The Legend Of Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point State Park | Utah | Wingate Campground Review

Before the turn of the 19th century, mustang herds ran wild on the mesas near Dead Horse Point. The unique promontory provided a natural corral into which the horses were driven by cowboys. The only escape was through a narrow, 30-yard neck of land controlled by fencing. Mustangs were then roped and broken, with the better ones being kept for personal use or sold to eastern markets. Unwanted culls of “broomtails” were left behind to find their way off the Point.

According to one legend, a band of broomtails was left corralled on the Point. The gate was supposedly left open so the horses could return to the open range. For some unknown reason, the mustangs remained on the Point. There they died of thirst within sight of the Colorado River, 2,000 feet below.

Today, Dead Horse Point provides a beautiful mesa where you can look for miles into Canyonlands National Park or 2,000 feet down to the Colorado River. There are a few short hikes around the edge of the mesa with stunning views into the deep canyons. The Intrepid Trail System offers 16.6 miles of hiking and biking trails with varying degrees of difficulty. The easiest and shortest loop is Intrepid, and Twisted Tree is the most challenging. The trails offer opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities, and provide breathtaking views.

Visiting Dead Horse Point With Kids

I think this is a great place to bring kids. The trails are easy and with short sections of scrambling and obstacles, they can be a blast for kids.

The trail does follow the edge of the mesa. However, the trail never comes dangerously close to the edge. Usually, you are good 10 or more feet from the edge of the cliff. Along the way, you have the option to detour out to rocky outcroppings for a better view or a cool photograph.

On these trails, you can hike and enjoy the views without getting near the edge of the cliffs. Even so, you should keep an eye on your kids while you are here. Keep them on the trail and dont let them stray towards the cliff edges.

Dead Horse Point State Park

Utah, Utah.

Visitors to Dead Horse Point State Park are in for a treat. Driving to each of the parkâs many overlooks reveals a completely different perspective. Once out of your car, make the short walk out to the canyonâs rim. Feel that little tingle in the back of your head? That tingle grows as the level ground of pavement and parking lot gives way to a sharp drop. It is 2,000 feet down to the Colorado River. Welcome to Utah’s Canyon Country. This is an ideal stop for visitors to Utah’s Mighty 5® and Road to Mighty® between Canyonlands and Arches national parks.

The park has built a splendid network of rolling singletrack trails over gentle slickrock domes and through the knee-high sage. Though technically mild by Moab standards, the trails are a hit for riders of all abilities. Families looking for a nice cruise together will enjoy the trails. Thereâs also plenty of fun for more experienced riders.

There are three official geocaches at Dead Horse Point. All caches are located either along trails or in day use areas. Rock scrambling is never required, and hiking off trail is prohibited.
