Year Round Camping In Colorado

Arkansas Headwaters State Park

Outdoor adventures in Pagosa Springs, Colorado: Perfect for families year round

Just outside of the small town of Salida, you will find Arkansas Headwaters State Park. This state park follows 152 miles of the Arkansas Headwaters, as it winds past several small towns and many picturesque views of the Rockies. The river is the main feature of the park, and white water rafting and boating are quite popular here. For beginners and intermediates, there are several well-established companies that will guide you on river adventures if you are so inclined. The area is also well-known for its rock climbing, gold panning, hiking, biking, fishing, and other activities.

Along the rivers edge, there are seven primitive campgrounds for RVs up to forty-two feet. None of these campgrounds offer hook-ups, but they are open for year-round enjoyment. Each is located along a different point of the river, so be sure to research which is best for you before booking your stay.

Four Mile Recreation Area

Because of its close proximity to Salida and Buena Vista, Fourmile can serve as a great base camp for exploring the entire area. Campers can stay for up to 14 days at primitive camp sites, as well as in several established campgrounds. Many spots have mountain views, others are secluded and woodsy, still others offer wide open vistas. Pitch a tent only in an existing site with a campfire ring and park on bare compacted areas. Keep in mind youre camping in the wild so bring your own drinking water, firewood and a portable toilet system. Packing out all your trash is a given. Beautiful drive-up sites for RVs are available too, on a first-come, first served basis.

Because wildlife is abundant but water is scarce, campers need to stay away from streams and other water sources. This allows the elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep to maintain their health. As always, wildlife should never be fed or disturbed.

What People Are Saying About Pueblo South / Colorado City Koa

Our truck broke down about 10 miles from this KOA. We had to have our truck and 42-foot fifth wheel towed to the KOA. That was a sight! Rubens and his staff were golden! They were extremely hospitable, checking on us several times throughout our stay. When the truck was ready, he even drove my husband into town to get it. The campground itself is spotless and very well kept. You can tell they take a lot of pride in their place. Candy, Google Review

How Can You Protect Yourself From Wildlife While Camping

If youre choosing a dispersed campsite, keep a couple of things in mind to help deter unwanted animals. Typically, youll want to find a flat and open campsite. And if theres a water source , be sure to camp farther away from it, as water will attract animals.

In Colorado, its important to store food correctly to avoid any incidents with bears or other animals. With that, leave no trace after meals and store all your food in a bear vault whenever possible. Along with that, leave any products with unnatural smells at home. This includes scented lotions and sometimes deodorant.

Overall, be aware of your surroundings and pack the necessary gear to protect yourself from wildlife. More often than not, if you keep your distance, so will they.
