Distance from SD: About 134 milesIf you really want to get away from it all, come out here. The only way to access this campground is by hiking there from the Pacific Coast Trail . There are two remote campsites out there that have nothing more than a picnic table and fire ring but plenty of fresh air and peace and quiet. You dont have to be hiking the entire PCT Wild-style to camp here, but you might get the chance to meet some interesting thru hikers who are resting for the night.
Why Camp In A Dispersed Site
Referred to as ‘primitive’ camping, most sites have no facilities or running water, but don’t let that deter you, as the sense of seclusion and overall camping experience is unbeatable. Think backpacking with your car, and you have pretty good sense for what it’s like to camp this way. And seeing that finding a reservable campsite in a National Park without planning six months ahead of time has gotten to be about as easy as finding tickets to a Beyoncé concert , these campsites can be invaluable.
Yosemite, for example, has over 7 million annual visitors but only 1,500 campsites, so finding a last minute place to camp can be a nightmare. This trend is true all over the Western US, as park visitor-ship continues to soar. And while you can now book spots online, the ability to do so favors those with ample foresight and quick fingers, and believe it or not, has even been plagued by so called ‘bots’ which automatically snatch up spots once available . All of this has made the option to camp within the public lands that surround many National Parks an almost necessary alternative.
Mendocino National Forest Dispersed Camping
One of the greatest allures of the Mendocino National Forest is the fact that no major highways or paved roads cross through the forest. So if youre looking for tranquility and seclusion, Mendocino is the place to go. Like other national forests, Mendocino offers dispersed primitive camping anywhere throughout the forest. There are also three dispersed campgrounds in Mendocino National Forest: Grizzly Flat, Lakeview, and Lower Nye.
Once youve established your free campsite, take your pick of activities, like horseback riding, swimming at Stonyford Recreation area , and hiking in the Chico Seed Orchard and Red Bluff Recreation Area.

The Hike Ill Never Go On
One last drive took me along the southern edge of The Giant Forest. This is another road accessible only to small vehicles and one feels dwarfed by the towering sequoias surrounding you.
This is the road that takes you to one of the more aspirational hikes in the park and one I will NEVER go on. I am working on my fear of heights, but I see no reason to overreach. Ill let others take this hike. Watch the video below if you want to vicariously hike to the sky.

Joshua Tree Dispersed Camping

The National Parks have often been called Americas Best Idea, but camping inside of one can be an expensive affair. Luckily, many of the countrys desert parks are surrounded by public land with designated camping areas for travelers on a budget.
Joshua Tree has two such spots in its vicinity: one near the west entrance and one near the southern entrance.
The legal dispersed camping area near the west entrance station is located off Sunfair Road and is little more than a dry lake bed. Sites are full of sunshine and offer the occasional makeshift fire ring but lacking in the privacy department.
On the parks south side, theres a large designated camping area just five minutes from the entrance, and many sites are bordered by mesquite trees and berms of dirt. You wont find any bathrooms or amenities here, so packing in your water and packing out your toilet paper are musts.
Joshua Tree National Park
Distance from SD: 164 miles There are a couple of ways to experience Joshua Tree. One way is to book a room at a hotel in town, then drive through the park to ooh and aah at the scenery from the comfort of your air-conditioned car. The other way is to camp out in the desert to experience the total darkness of a starry desert night or a glorious J-Tree sunrise first-hand. There are nine campgrounds throughout the park where you can do just that. During the scorching summer months they are mostly first come, first served, but in the busier fall-spring season youre better off making a reservation. If everything fills up, there is always the alternative to pitch your tent on the BLM land outside the park.

Borrego Palm Canyon Campground

Borrego Palm Canyon Campground is quite possibly the most popular campground in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. One glance at the view and its easy to see why.
Tall barren peaks parted by a plentiful canyon serve as the campground backdrop. Their jagged, rocky hillsides painted with muted reds and browns break pattern only for the occasional desert plants.
Located within walking distance from the visitor center, the Borrego Palm Campground features 120 campsites with a mix of tent, trailer, and RV spots. For those in need of full-hookups, youll find them on the loop arranged in a parking lot fashion.
As for the campsite, they come with a fire ring, picnic table, food locker, and a much appreciated shade ramada. Potable water and restrooms with flush toilets are available, while hot showers are token operated.
Why you should camp here: A well-maintained campground with two nature trails and cabin rental options.

Conveniently located at the crossroads of CA-78 and S3, Tamarisk Grove Campground is a straight shot right down the Banner grade.
Take a stroll along the two nature trails or explore the Kumeyaay Village Site a couple miles away.
Important To Know Before You Go*:

- to fill out the form ahead of time and submit
- Pick up at the Laguna Mountain Visitors Center at Los Huecos Rd
- Call the Alpine Ranger Station 445-6235 NOTE: Youll want them to know youre there in case theres a fire, unfortunately happens too often up there
- Watch for rattlesnakes, especially during the summer, avoid hiking off cleared dirt roads/paths
- Absolutely no wood or charcoal fires allowed, Gas stoves ok.
- Campfires ONLY allowed in developed campgrounds with designated fire rings. These are FEE campgrounds and provide additional amenities like a picnic table, bathrooms and showers. If youd prefer this option, here are two wed suggest:
- Burnt Rancheria near town, close to Kitchen Creek Road. Busy, reservations recommended. Larger driveways for RVs but no hook ups, $22/night, $7 day use
- Laguna/El Prado Campground close to Pine Creek Road, access to a great meadow area with two smaller lakes and hiking/mountain biking trails. Busy, reservations recommended. Group sites available at El Prado. Larger driveways for RVs but no hook ups, $22/night, $7 day use

Buck Rock And Horse Corrals
As you drive further along Big Meadows Road, youll find the Horse Corrals, a first-come, first-served camping area for people withsurprise! Horses. Just past the corrals, branching to the left is a dirt road turnoff to Buck Rock Campground, another first-come/first-served campground, this one with pit toilets. Dispersed Camping In San Diego: Mount Laguna
A list of places to dispersed camp in and around Mount Laguna in San Diego County, CA.
Mount Laguna is located in Cleveland National Forest and is part of the USDA Forest Service. To get there, take the 8 east and get off at the Sunrise Highway exit. Make a left off the freeway and head up the mountain. The Sunrise Highway has spectacular views any time of day and many spots to stop and view the mountain region or the desert. Its around an hour drive north and leads you to Lake Cuyamaca, the City of Julian and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
First up is Pine Creek Road. It starts a mile west of the Sunrise Highway. There is a campground just west of the junction of Pine Creek Road and Laguna Meadow Road. Camping is not permitted at Borrow Pit or Filaree Meadow. Besides the Adventure Pass, a free remote camping permit is required. A link to a printable version of the permit is available here. You can only camp for 14 out of every 30 days.
Next up is La Posta Road/Thing Valley Road. It begins 1/2 mile south of the Sunrise Highway. Camping is only permitted on both sides of the road north of Morris Ranch Road. Below Morris Ranch Road, you can only camp on the east side of the road.

Located in the southern end of Anza-Borrego, Mountain Palm Springs Campground is a free primitive campground with only a handful of sites and a vault toilet. You can park a smaller RV here, but this campground is best suited for tent and car campers.
There are several hiking trails nearby for those looking to explore on foot, the most popular of which leads you out to an isolated palm grove.
Bring your camera and some water, and be on the lookout for cholla. These fuzzy looking cactus can cause some serious pain if you dont keep your eye on the trail.
