Monitor Your Electrolytes Needs

Electrolytes are one of the most important parts of the keto diet, no matter what you do.

They become even more vital when you do anything that makes you sweat. While camping or hiking, your physical activity levels are raised drastically, and you will be sweating a lot. Especially if the weather is hot.

This also means that you will be losing electrolytes at a higher rate than usual. You absolutely need to replenish them in order to perform well, feel good and have enough energy to withstand the whole weekend in the outdoors.

The first symptoms of off-balance electrolytes are a headache, tiredness, muscle cramps, insomnia, brain fog, and weakness. If you have any of these symptoms then ramp up your intake of electrolyte-rich foods or tablets and you will feel way better.

How Long Have You Been On The Keto Diet

Before getting into nutritional ketosis, you may experience flu-like symptoms as your body adapts to carb restriction. Though the symptoms usually go away in a few days, youll find it hard to be a happy camper during this time.

For this reason, it may be best to give yourself at least 1-2 weeks on a strict ketogenic diet before going on your camping or backpacking trip.

If you are already keto-adapted, then staying keto will be much easier. Plus, youll be able to add some extra carbs into your diet to compensate for any long hikes you go on.

On the other hand, if you cant change your plans, you may want to hold off on strict keto until you get home. Instead, use the camping trip as an opportunity to cut back on high-carb foods and ease your transition into ketosis.

Trail mix is essential for hiking in my opinion. I made my own keto trail mix using roasted almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and Lilys chocolate chips.

Dont forget to pack electrolytes while backpacking. Nuun has electrolyte vitamin tabs that are sweetened with Stevia but not all of them are so be sure to check the labels!
