With roughly 63% of all Utah land remaining public, there are plenty of opportunities for free camping near Salt Lake City, far into the flat reaches of the West Desert, and throughout the southern red rock. Free camping options throughout Utah offer a way to explore the lesser known parts of the state.
Thankfully, you wont be hard-pressed to find idyllic free campsites across the Beehive state with little to no work involved. Depending where youre located, free camping might be less than a mile off the highway. For last-minute camping, you can use The Dyrt PROs Offline Maps and Map Layers to find free camping near you. These features will show you public lands where you can camp for free whether or not you have service or wifi!
In densely populated areas, however, free camping in Utah requires a little more creativity, patience, and route-finding. Almost always, though, the effort it takes to arrive is well worth it.
More Free Overnight Camping In Kansas
In addition to the public lands we’ve already discussed, many businesses offer a free place to park. Not exactly full-on campsites, these are typically just a parking space at the back of a Walmart parking lot, and while it’s not required, the hope is that you’ll shop at their business during your stay. Be considerate of other customers, and try and remain as stealthy as possiblegenerally, etiquette is to not put out your chairs or awning and otherwise be discreet. That said, these places are perfectly legal spots to spend the night. You’ll find Walmart and Cabella’s with this policy located primarily near I-70 and US 50, making them the perfect way to get some shut-eye on the long trek that is crossing Kansas. Be sure to check with management or security before settling in for the night.
Also of note, the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, aka Strataca, provides free camping in their lot to customers interested in a tour of the mines.

While the Western United States are filled with seemingly endless opportunities to find beautiful, free camping, few states do it quite as well as Colorado.

Lake Dillon Disc Golf Course
Stretch your legs on this gorgeous Summit County course off of Exit 205. The eighteen holes were completed in 2014, and it has since become a destination for those golfers looking for a challenge. Hole number eight has become the signature hole for its dramatic tee box that sits on a bluff about 100 feet above the fairway. Watch for tricky Lake Dillon wind as you take on this hilly and technical course!

What Is Dispersed Camping
All free camping in Colorado is dispersed camping. This means there are no amenities. You are expected to pack it in, pack it out, and practice Leave No Trace.
Only embark on a dispersed camping adventure if you know how to properly dig a hole and poop in the woods . Pack out all of your toilet paper and pick up dog waste before you leave.
Youll also want to make sure you bring enough water for the time youre at camp. Dont forget a trash bag .
Lastly, only stay in previously established sites. This ensures that no new campsites are created, which leads to more human impact on the environment.
Sacred White Shell Mountain
Sacred White Shell Mountain is a gem of free camping in Colorado. Located way down south in the San Luis Valley, this BLM land is the perfect place to set up camp if you want to explore Great Sand Dunes National Park. Its only about a 15 min drive from this camping area to the entrance of the National Park, yet it still feels secluded and uncrowded.
Youll find plenty of dispersed sites with space to spread out along Lake Como Road. Just be aware that this starts as an easily passable dirt road, but eventually becomes super rocky and requires high-clearance 4WD, so stop at one of the earlier sites if your vehicle cant handle that.
This area also makes a great base camp if you want to summit the 14er of Blanca Peak. Even if you dont hike the peak, you can appreciate the beautiful views of Mount Blanca from your campsite.

Free Camping On Northern Utah Blm Land
The often-overlooked northwest corner of Utah is home to the Grouse Creek Mountains, Goose Creek Mountains, Bovine Mountains, and the Raft River Mountains . The land leading up to the first three mountain ranges are BLM land with many pull-offs for free camping. This area is popular with hunters in season, so beware.
There are also some nice camp spots to the west of Randolph on FR20058 and FR20061. Following either of these will eventually lead you to the eastern bench of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
Due west of Salt Lake City, Five Mile Recreation Area is about the best free camping you can find within easy driving distance of downtown. This area is popular with mountain bikers, hikers, and ORV-users, so if you dont mind a bit of noise, you can find an excellent spot with immediate access to trails. During the week, usage decreases for more solitude and respite.
Blue River South Of Breckenridge
If youre looking for free places to camp near Breckenridge, then head to the Blue Lakes area. Head south on Highway 9 to find a variety of free camping.
Keep in mind, many of these spots require high-clearance, 4WD vehicles since they head up old mining roads. Check out the Jeep Road up to Crystal Lake, the roads around the Mohawk Lakes Trailhead, Spruce Creek Trailhead, and the Kite Lake area .

Free Dispersed Camping In Cimarron National Grassland
If you’re a fan of national forests, Kansas’ version comes in the form of national grasslands. Cimarron offers bare-bones boondocking just outside of the park. Unlike your typical national forest, don’t expect much in the way of scenery. The place isn’t for everyone, but should campers want to see what a national grassland entails or just need a quick, free overnighter while traveling Kansas State Route 51, the option is available.

Twin Lakes And Chaffee County Road 399
If youve got a high clearance vehicle, head down County Road 399 outside of Twin Lakes. Continue 2 miles past the junction with Highway 82 for some exceptional camping.
What I love most about this area are the beautiful rocky peaks. Youll be nestled close to some of Colorados best 14ers, amazing fishing, and a few 4WD adventures.
Head up to the end of the road for the start of Grizzly Peak, the highest 13er in Colorado. Take the alternate fork in the road to explore old mining ruins and beautiful mountain views.
Local Tip: There is endless free camping along the Leadville to Salida corridor. Check out Caffee County Road 390 for more spots.

- State Parks offer a wide variety of campgrounds. Colorado RV camping locations from the mountains to the plains with almost unlimited recreation opportunities are located throughout the state. Full-service RV camping sites are available in most state parks.
- Division of Wildlife There are 240 state wildlife management areas in Colorado, and most of them allow camping. A Colorado Wildlife Habitat Stamp is not required for camping and visiting Colorado Wildlife Management Areas and State Trust Lands but is required to hunt and fish in most circumstances. As of July 1, 2020, a Colorado state wildlife area pass, a valid Colorado hunting license, or a valid Colorado fishing license is required.

North Of Steamboat Springs
Tucked into a narrow north-south valley at the base of Farwell Mountain, this campground offers scenery and first-rate fishing. On an early summer morning, you might wake up to tendrils of mist curling over the lake, a dusting of snow on the ridgelines, and the sounds of 18-inch trout leaping out of the water. Pearl Lake is managed in conjunction with Steamboat Lake to the north, but it is much smaller and attracts a quieter family crowd. The lower loop is lakeside, so these sites are most popular, but there is not a bad site in the park. The upper loop is located on a gentle hill that is just 200 yards from the lake. There is a short trail to the dam, which connects with the 6-mile Coulton Creek Forest Service trail, as well as a boat ramp at the south end of the lake.
If you go: 36 sites for tents and RVs up to 55 feet, two yurts available by reservation only. Many sites are pull-through, but there are no hookups. Site 35 and Yurt 6 are wheelchair accessible. Reservations accepted at 800-678-2267 and coloradostateparks.reserveamerica.com. $18 per night. The yurts sleep six and cost $70 per night. In the effort of preserving and protecting our natural environments, its important to practice Leave No Trace ethics when establishing a free campsite in Utah. If there are semi-established campsites, use them! LNT states that if you create a campfire ring in the backcountry, you should destroy the ring before you leave the site and if you find an already established campfire ring, its better to use it than build your own.
To reduce the effects of site creep, stay within the relative confines of an established campsite. Otherwise, year over year, users will eventually expand the boundaries of a campsite until the site creeps farther and affects a larger space than necessary. This applies especially to pull-offs in national forests like Dixie and Fish Lake which see high usage from ORV vehicles and pull-behind trailers.
A special consideration for the Utah desert is for users to ensure additional caution around cryptobiotic soilthe soul of the desert. Because the desert is such a delicate environment, cryptobiotic soil helps maintain moisture in the arid dirt with its blend of algae, cyanobacteria, and fungi. When these patches of soil are damaged they can take years, even centuries to rebuild. A good rule of thumb and desert hiking motto: Tiptoe around the crypto!
Iron Springs Group Ashley National Forest
Iron Springs Group Site can host 4-5 trailers depending on length, in the grassy meadow just a few miles off UT-191. This area becomes busy on weekends with OHV users, horseback riders, hikers, and anglers. Small lakes and streams surround the Iron Springs Group areaperfect for self-sustainable vanlifers looking to catch dinner!

Youve probably heard that you can camp overnight in the parking lot of a Walmart. Or Cracker Barrel. Or some other business/type of place. While its true that you can spend the night in a parking lot for most of these businesses, some states have laws and restrictions around this. Again, check online for what information you can find, and if all else fails, check with management before setting up camp. Remember that you have to stay in your car if you plan on staying in a parking lot . It might not be the most comfortable option, but its a good backup plan to keep in mind.

There are a few things you should know before you go camping in Colorado. For starters, if you plan on going dispersed camping in Colorado, be prepared. Youll want to bring a trash bag for ALL of your trash, all of your water, and a proper backcountry bathroom kit.

Free Camping On Northern Utah Forest Service Land
Vanlifers can explore the Sawtooth National Forest and northern reaches of the mighty Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest which covers over 2 million north-south acres. Once on UT-89 east out of Logan, follow FR 20081 to reach off-shoot roads like FR 20052 to The Elbow and Providence Peak. FR 20081 meets up with FR 20231, the left fork of Blacksmith Fork Canyon with multiple forested pullouts.
To the northeast, a true gem: the Uinta Mountain Range. Follow almost any marked forest service road and youre sure to find a somewhat established pull-out along the way.
Coming from the Wyoming entrance through Mountain View will offer even more solitude and opportunity near Hoop Lake, Soldier Park, and Hickerson Park, in the Ashley National Forest.
One of my favorite areas in Utah is the Manti-La Sal National Forest which begins right at the Nephi exit off I-15, a little over an hour south of Salt Lake City. A few miles along UT-132, turn right onto Log Canyon Rd, which will turn into FR 20069, a long, winding, and beautiful drive among Box Elder and Pinyon Pine.
Driving farther along UT-132 will bring even more options due east of Ephraim and Manti towards Joes Valley Reservoir. This area is popular with rock climbers and offers countless free campsites and delicious coffee at Cup of Joes in Orangeville.
