Free Camping Near Boise

Boise is Idahos capital city and by far its largest one. Its also one of the fastest-growing cities in America and is known for its brewery scene, great restaurants, and remarkable access to outdoor recreation.

If you want to be right in the center of the action, a private campground is your best option in Boise. However, if you dont mind a bit of drive to get into the metropolis, check out the BLM lands at Swan Falls Campground or the free dispersed camping at Bogus Basin.

Kootenai County Fairgrounds Rv Park

We stumbled upon this campground by calling the local county office. This may be the best-kept secret in North Idaho. This is a beautiful grassy campground right in the center of town. Each space has a large paved area to park an RV, full hookups, and a spacious grassy area. However, there are no shared facilities or bathrooms so you must be fully contained.

We stayed here for a week in our 35-foot travel trailer and enjoyed the 4H horse demonstrations and dog shows. My only complaint is that the rates have been increasing as more people have discovered my secret place.

Black Canyon Recreation Site

  • Cell Service: Yes on booster

  • Elevation: 4748 ft

This free camping area is really more of a gravel parking area on BLM land in the mountains above Pocatello, ID. The sign posted during our visit stated that its only open April 14 – November 16.

Because no one was there during our quick overnight stop, we enjoyed this place and the great views. Theres a pit toilet at one end of the parking area and several nice tent sites right across the road with covered picnic tables and fire pits.

This is an OHV area, so from what we understand, it can get rather noisy on the weekends from ATV and OHV traffic. If this were the case, I would imagine this free camping area would be suited for nothing more than a late night pull-in and place to lay your head, if that.

There is no exit directly from I-15 onto N. Black Canyon Road, so your GPS will first route you onto Old Hwy 91 in order to get to this free campsite. The gravel road in is a little bumpy but should be fine for all types of vehicles and campers, but is not ideal for larger RVs.

Where Can You Camp For Free In Idaho

Free camping in Idaho near Coeur D

Not everyone wants to pay to camp, and we totally get that. Some of our favorite spots are dispersed camping sites with no amenities whatsoever. It may be hard to believe, but the federal BLM has 12 million acres in Idaho.

While most BLM campgrounds require that you pay a fee to camp, there are others that allow dispersed camping for free.

To find free camping in Idaho, there are many online resources, and one of the more dependable ones is Campendium.com. You can search for campgrounds by location and sort according to price.

To find the freebies, just be sure and set the price category to free. The website also has maps , directions and GPS coordinates, and ratings and reviews from other campers. We always find those particularly useful and try to read as many as possible to get a fuller picture of a place.

If youre looking for national forest camping in Idaho, there are some great choices around Roman Nose Lakes! These dispersed camping sites are in a proposed wilderness area in the Kaniksu National Forest.

There are several smaller sites perfect for vehicle or tent camping, as well as one large group site. Each site has a leveled gravel pad, a fire ring, and there is a pit toilet available.

A trail system connects each campsite to the lowest of the 3 Roman Nose Lakes, and a boardwalk goes around a section of this lake. From there you can do the approximately 4 mile out and back trail up to visit the other two lakes.

The Roman Nose Trail is great for families. We hiked it in July and our daughter got to play in a little snow, the trail is well maintained and easy to follow, and each of the three lakes are crystal clear and the views are incredible!.

Milner Historic Recreation Area

  • Cell Service: Yes on booster

  • Elevation: 4137 ft

  • FEE: $5.00 when we visited

Although this place isnt technically free camping in Idaho, it made our list because the $5.00 fee is so minimal for such a nice camping area. The Milner Historic Recreation Area stretches for 4 miles along the Snake River with primitive campsites throughout.

The sites are spaced far apart and there are basic amenities at this wild camping area – picnic tables, fire pits, and pit toilets. Because there are 6 different offshoots down to the multiple camping areas, it can take a bit of time if youre trying to drive around to check out each one. Looking at google maps in satellite view can help you pick out your desired campsite without spending as much time!

There are two main entrances to get into the camping area, each one with a pay station. Take the western entrance if your camper needs more than an 11 height clearance, as theres a low train bridge you have to go under when using the eastern entrance. The road in is maintained gravel and any length rig should be able to find a spot.

If youre into history, theres a hiking trail to historic wagon ruts from the Oregon Trail days in this same recreation area.

Finlay Flats Recreation Area In Montana

  • Cell Service: none, but we were told other sites at the same campground do have service

  • Elevation: 2,335 ft

Although this free campsite is actually in Montana, were including it on this list because its on your likely route for your Idaho road trip if you avoid interstates like us and are trying to zig zag through the national forests of Idaho.

This dispersed camping area is found on national forest land along the Clark Fork River, just off Hwy 200 near the Idaho/Montana border. After turning north onto NF-2654/Finlay Flats Road, which is well maintained gravel, travel under 2 miles, cross the railroad tracks, and youll arrive at Finlay Flats.

The free camping spots are large enough for bigger RVs, level, and most of the 10-12 sites have a bit of shade. The spots are close enough together that you wont have a lot of privacy or feel very secluded, but the views of the Clark Fork River and surrounding area more than make up for it.

Youll need to be prepared to boondock while staying at this free campground. There is no potable water, trash, or electricity, however, there are pit toilets available.

Camping At The Clark Fork Drift Yard In Idaho

The first thing you need to know about camping at the drift yard near Clark Fork, ID is there is really only one sort of established campsite.

The rest of the camping is either in the parking lot, along the circle road that leads to the one campsite, or you can camp in the small area before the parking lot.

Related Product: Add snap on SnapPad Rubber RV Jack Feet to your RV stabilizers to add grip and eleminate the need for RV blocks.

In this drone shot, you can see the main campsite in the top left corner on the edge of the circle.

Some were camping in it when we got there so we chose to park along the edge of that same circle.

It ended up being a great place to camp we just didnt have much outdoor space which was fine since we could only stay there for 3 days.

To the right, you see another smaller circle where people were also camping.

This is also a good spot for a nice campsite as well although that spot did have a few cars pulling into it late at night.

Otherwise, people camped along the edges of the parking lot which is for the boat ramp.

The main problem with the good campsite in the corner is its by a river opening where you can fish or launch small boats.

Its also by the entrance to a grassy area where some people were tent camping so there was a lot of traffic and people parking around that area.

Some people even parked right next to the guy camping in that spot to spend the night.
