Gorgeous Views Friendly Campground Hosts
We stayed at Spectacle Lake Campground for a single night with our dog. Absolutely stunning views and well spaced campsites for an established campground. I had a few questions about nearby towns and the area. The host, an older lady, was extremely helpful and broke out a map and showed us the best gas stop enroute to the dunes. She came by later to the campsite to chat and let us know that rains are common in the evening this time of year so to make sure we get our tent up soon she also let us know that the RV that was camped a couple sites away has to leave their generator on all night due to medical issues and we had the option to move, but that they were pretty quiet. We chose to stay and did not have an issue with their generator. It did sprinkle and drizzle on and off so we ended up not building a fire, even though wood was available for sale. Campsite had the basics of a fire pit with grill, tent pad, and picnic table. There were water spigots and bathrooms available within easy walking distance too. So many hiking trails in the area, we’ll have to make a return visit to explore this forest more!

Colorado Backcountry Campsite Elopement In Rio Grande National Forest
Adrienne and Diego were meant to have a May 2020 wedding. They have been together over eight years, and engaged well over a year.
Their celebration was to be big. They both have lots of family and friends, and everyone was invited. And then COVID-19 happened. The plans changed. They could no longer have all everyone come celebrate with them in the traditional way theyd carefully planned for months. Everything was postponed.
But about two weeks before their original wedding date, they decided they didnt want to wait any more to get married. They picked up a marriage certificate and planned a remote camping trip far away from any paved road or cell signal. They invited their parents and closest friends to join them and witness them say I do to each other in a field somewhere tucked in the mountains of southern Colorado. A true campsite elopement.
Adriennes father officiated the ceremony. Her mom brought cupcakes and champagne and flowers. They also made matching wedding masks for everyone in attendance. While Adrienne is saving her wedding dress for the day they finally can celebrate in a bigger way, she wore a white romper with a flower crown that fit the setting beautifully. When she and her dad walked down the aisle to the song Here Comes the Sun, the actual sun peeked out from behind a cloud and shined down on them throughout the ceremony.

The Rio Grande National Forest is one of Colorado’s true undiscovered gems, home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States and the second largest national forest in the world. It runs along the continental border and covers more than 2,000 square miles of land with a total area of over 1.5 million hectares. In 1881 Colorado voters approved a referendum that selected as the .

Trip Report: Rio Grande National Forest Camping May 2020
Our first Colorado camping trip this year was in the Rio Grande National Forest, west of the San Luis Valley.
In May, it can still be frigid and snowy in the Colorado mountains, so we chose a lower-elevation destination. This being Colorado, that meant around 8,000 feet above sea level, on the eastern slopes of La Garita Mountains.
After arriving and unpacking, I noticed that a large insect had unfortunately gotten stuck between our front license plate and bumper. Looks like a dragonfly, but Im no entomologist. Sorry, buddy.
Spring can be super windy in Colorado, and we endured our share on this trip.
Normally, Im not a big fan of wind because it can interfere with drone flights and kick up dust that clouds landscape photos. I also feel like it saps my strength and drains my bodys water balance.
But in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, weve learned to break out the kite and take advantage of windy times.
Our campsite wasnt anything specialmore a convenient spot to pull off the side of a remote dirt road on public lands. But our campsite did afford wonderful solitude and expansive views of the surrounding landscape. At sunset, I found the most interesting thing to photograph was the silhouette of the horizon.
To keep my tripod stable, both for the telescope and camera, I pile a bunch of rocks into a simple nylon pouch and hang it to make the platform sturdier.

Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument
The RÍo Grande del Norte National Monument is comprised of rugged, wide open plains at an average elevation of 7,000 feet, dotted by volcanic cones, and cut by steep canyons with rivers tucked away in their depths. The RÍo Grande carves an 800 foot deep gorge through layers of volcanic basalt flows and ash. Among the volcanic cones in the Monument, Ute Mountain is the highest, reaching to 10,093 feet.
This area has attracted human activity since prehistoric times. Evidence of ancient use is found throughout the area in the form of petroglyphs, prehistoric dwelling sites, and many other types of archaeological sites. More recent activity includes abandoned homesteading from the 1930s.
The Monument is an important area for wintering animals, and provides a corridor by which wildlife move between the two mountain ranges.
The unique setting of the Monument also provides a wealth of recreational opportunities. Whitewater rafting, hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and camping are some of the more outstanding activities that can be enjoyed in the Monument.
