Extinguish Your Campfire Properly

  • Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible.
  • Pour lots of water on the fire, drown all the embers, not just the red ones.
  • Pour until hissing sound stops.
  • Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel.
  • Scrape the sticks and logs to remove any embers.
  • Stir and make sure everything is wet and they are cold to the touch.
  • If you do not have water, use dirt. Mix enough dirt or sand with the embers. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cool. Remember: Do not bury the fire as the fire will continue to smolder and could catch roots on fire that will eventually get to the surface and start a wildfire.

Looking for advice on 2 days of tent camping

After that going to Telluride and then 2 days of camping in Ouray.

Our favorite campsites are the Forest Service campgrounds west of Nathrop along Chalk Creek. Check out.. Mt Princeton, Chalk Lake, Cascade , Iron City.

    Also look at CG up

I like Hecla Junction. The south side is the take-out for many rafting companies, so it can be busy during the afternoon. I like it because the sites are not on top of each other – In general I can not recall seeing any RVs , and it is right against the Arkansas river .

As far as hikes go, you are in the Collegiate Peaks range… Do you have aspirations for a 14er? Gosh knows, there are quite a few with some great routes. Mt. Princeton has a nice trail but the hike is long and could be a little busy. There is a book written by Gerry Roach that outlines the routes for the 14ers and it might be a good reference if 14ers are in your future.

Thanks…it looks like we can’t go wrong anywhere,

If I get picky and want to scout 2-3 spots that day where would you start ?

    I’d start with Chalk Creek.
