It may be surprising to some, but the best time to camp in certain climates can be during winter! Death Valley is an excellent place to camp during October and November, for example, since the temperature remains in the 90s during the day and lowers to just a little below 60 at night.

You Should Still Make Reservations

COVID-19 restrictions vary by state and facility. Information is updated regularly on a park or recreation areas website. Please check before making travel plans. Campgrounds are generally less busy during the fall season, but reservations are accepted at most places and generally recommended.

“We have seen a record number of visitors at our parks and while summer is the most popular time for camping, we recommend fall campers make reservations in advance and check the parks website for relevant information,” advised Lyons.

Things To Consider When Choosing The Right Camping Season

When choosing the best month or season to go camping, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Are you okay with crowds? Or do you prefer peace and quiet?
  • Are you planning to swim or partake in aquatic activities? Or would you rather hike trails and have a bonfire?
  • Are you camping with kids? Or camping alone?
  • Do you like to challenge yourself when camping? Or do you prefer to relax?

When camping with your family, a more relaxing and leisurely approach is best when choosing the right time to go camping. The best time for leisure camping is during summer when the weather is beautiful, and swimming is abundant.

If you prefer to go it alone and you like a good challenge, camping during fall or winter can be a great option for you.

After answering these questions, it can be easier to decide which camping season works best for your needs.

The White Mountain National Forest is brilliant during the fall season. Gentle brooks and soft hillsides complement the multi colored symphony of the season. The history of this place is just as unique as the ambiance, much of it is a commemoration of some of the earliest reforestation efforts. Though much of the forests may seem old, large areas of the park have actually been reformed in the last 100 years. New York State Parks Blog

If you think camping in a state park campground is enjoyable in the summer, wait until you experience an overnight getaway in September or early October, when New Yorks outdoors is awash in enough colors and sounds of the season to overwhelm the senses.

The autumn mist rising from the waters surface on a brisk morning, paddling along a tree-lined shore edged in spectacular reds, oranges and golds, the crunch of leaves underfoot on a hike, the aroma of coffee over a crackling fire these are just a few of the experiences awaiting those campers who prefer to camp once the crowds thin, schools are back in session, and Labor Day is in the rearview mirror.

Benefits to fall camping include fewer neighbors, fewer bugs, and a greater selection of sites from the peak summer season. With the right clothes and gear, the slightly cooler temperatures make fall camping more comfortable than in the commonly muggy dog days of summer.

Plan to extend a leaf-peeping day trip and sleep under the autumn stars. You can book ahead to reserve a spot or opt for a spontaneous adventure and just grab your gear and go. Many state park campgrounds throughout New York are still open with availability for tent and trailer sites, yurts, cabins, and cottages.
