So, weve emerged from another winter to be rewarded with longer days and the promise of summer holidays spent with family and friends. And in a spirit of optimism were ready to start planning our camping trips.

This summer will be even better than ever. No, really, because as of November this year we have more than 20 new cycle trails, many of which take the mountain out of mountain biking and make scenic, off-road riding accessible to nearly everyone.

As off-road cyling gathers momentum across New Zealand, so the number and diversity of accessible wilderness adventures increases, too. 1. Russell-Orongo Bay Holiday Park, Northland

Why go? Not only incredibly picturesque in that nestled-in-a-cove kind of way, the tiny town of Russell is full of history, close to a range of outdoor adventures on sea and land, and odds-on it will be warm and sunny.

Walk The Full Circle Walkway connects Russell, Paihia, Opua and Okiato forming a loop of 5-6hr walking broken up with a couple of short ferry rides. Easily tackled in stages, the 34 hour Russell to Okiato section close to the holiday park has accessible, flat boardwalk stretches suitable for pushchair outings. Also nearby is spectacular Cape Brett, offering a 6-7hr one-way walk which keen teenagers may well enjoy.

Nothing beats waking up on a cold morning to see fresh, white snow set against the red rocks of Arches National Park. One of the most popular trails, the Delicate Arch Trail, takes you on an amazing hike full of photo opportunities. The park only has one campground, The Devils Garden, which has 50 campsites, but there are other places to camp nearby in the Moab area. Although the roads and trails have reopened at this park, the campground and visitor center remain closed.

One of Florida’s oldest state parks is also its most camper-friendly. Highland Hammock State Park offers 143 campsites tucked inside a forest of live oaks and sawtooth palms where whitetail deer are frequent visitors. Though the facilities can feel a little dated , they are reliable. Take your pick from a wealth of trails, which bring you face-to-face with the cypress knees, birdlife, and wild orange trees there’s also a scenic 3-mile bike loop under a canopy of dense foliage . Want to feel really removed from civilization? A handful of wilderness campsites are available, too.

Mississippi: Buccaneer State Park

Bucaneer State Park suffered extensive damage amidst the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, the park has been completely rebuilt. Located right on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, Buccaneer State Park offers camping with views of the water. Things get weter and wilder over at the waterpark, which includes water slides and a wave pool.

Colonial Creek Campground North Cascades National Park

As one of the best campgrounds in North Cascades National Park and accessed via the seasonal North Cascades Highway, Colonial Creek Campground is one of the most popular bases to explore this rugged region of Washington. With a public boat ramp and pier that allows visitors to access the aquamarine waters of Diablo Lake, popular recreation outlets at the campground include fishing, boating, and taking quick dips into the frigid water.

Numerous hiking trails can also be found stemming from Colonial Creek, including the hike up to Thunder Knob and one of the best hiking trails in the North Cascades, Thunder Creek to Fourth of July Pass. All 142 sites at Colonial Creek are best suited for tent camping or small recreation vehicles, and all campsites have access to flushing toilets and potable water.

Minnewaska State Park Reserve New York

Only 94 miles outside of New York City, this state park reserve sits on Shawangunk Ridge, more than 2,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by rocky terrain. That’s a lot of space to hike, bike, and especially enjoy the view. The park is currently operating with a reduced capacity, and some facilities are closed the adjacent campground is also temporarily closed.

Securing the spot for the top family campsite is this true gem of a lake, a jewel set at the foot of Mount Shasta at 3,181 feet, the prettiest lake on the I-5 corridor in California. The lake level is almost always full and offers a variety of quality recreation options, with great swimming, low-speed boating, and fishing. The campground complexes are huge, yet they are tucked into the forest so visitors dont get their styles cramped.

The water in this 435-acre lake is clean and fresh. There is an excellent beach and swimming area, the latter protected by a buoy line. In spring, the fishing is good for trout, and then as the water warms, for smallmouth bass. A good boat ramp and boat rentals are available, and a 10-mph speed limit is strictly enforced, keeping the lake pristine and quiet. The City of Mount Shasta holds its Fourth of July fireworks display above the lake. The campgrounds are huge and often fill on weekends and summer holidays.

There’s nothing like camping next to this beautiful coastline, marked by several sea stacks. Olympic National Park has 14 different campgrounds, some next to the ocean and others in the rain forest, so you can enjoy a variety of landscapes. The park is beginning a phased reopening, and campgrounds and visitor centers are closed.

The petrified forest areas of Ginkgo are day-use only, and camping can be found three miles east towards the community of Vantage at Wanapum Recreation Area State Park. Along the shore of the Wanapum Reservoir, the recreation area features 50 full-hookup RV sites and two hiker/biker areas. A public boat launch is a popular means of enjoying the water, and nearby concert goers at the Gorge Amphitheater often take advantage of the campground come summer. Red Shoot is steeped in family life: the present owner, Jaqui Oldfield, is the third generation of her family to run the business. She also has children of her own, so she understands the needs of families. It’s a big site 100 pitches, 46 with electric hook-up but the joy of this north-western part of the New Forest is that, even in mid-summer, you can walk five minutes from the site and find yourself in a secluded spot that could be miles from anyone.

There’s a great play area with a fireman’s pole and rope and swing bridges, and a well-stocked shop to keep energy levels up. Next door to the site, and closely connected to it, is the Red Shoot Inn which specialises, as you’d imagine, in serving families. Plus, the area positively groans with wonderful days out: Marwell Zoo, Monkey World, Liberty’s Raptor and Reptile Centre and the New Forest Water park are all within striking distance.
