Darby canyon has free camping. About 15-20 minutes from Driggs. No amenities. Some cowpies, which is a downer depending on the site. Totally legit though as long as you have less than twenty people and some other restrictions. Stream nearby. The wind cave and some awesome views are a bit further up the Darby Canyon Trail. Flat ground. Pretty good time. Dispersed camping is allowed through most of the Jedidiah Smith Wilderness with some exceptions as posted, just so you know.

For those seeking a true wilderness experience, the Gros Ventre Wilderness Area east of Jackson offers free camping in primitive sites with spectacular views of the Tetons. August and early September are your best bets for camping free of snow, but the area is accessible year round for those campers who don’t mind roughing it in the snow. Finding Places To Camp On The Other Side Of The Tetons
The drive up and over Teton Pass was grueling. My Chevy 2500 HD was just barely towing the 28 foot toy hauler at a slothly 20 MPH in 1st gear, up a 10% grade, and the engine growling at 4,000 RPMs. That was all it could do, and there was 5.5 miles of this stuff uphill. I had a line of cars behind me, and there were only a few pull outs.
I figured the drive down the mountain on the other side would be better, but the curves were rated at 25MPH and the roads were wet. I was able to put the truck into 2nd gear, but still had to vary between 25 and 35 MPH. I had a still a line of cars behind me.
No more am I going to do this Teton shit again! I said to myself.
If I was going to find a place to set up camp, it would have to be on this side, because I wasnt going to go back over the Pass.
Targhee National Forest on the Idaho side of the Tetons is much less crowded than Bridger-Teton on the Wyoming side. Except, you dont get the awesome views of the Tetons. Thats OK, I figured. I already saw enough of the Tetons.
I checked out three dispersed camping areas I found on Google Satellite Maps, including Forest Road 239 , Hungry Creek Road, and Forest Road 253, . Many had spaces open, but none of them had any Verizon 4G data. One of them didnt even have Verizon voice signal. That just wasnt going to do. I needed Internet access while camping to work my website development projects.
To my surprise, every one of them was open!
Fuck it I said to myself. Im taking it.

I loved this place! Stayed there summer of 2022. There is a stream to drive across and I was concerned about whether I should try it and ultimately did. Turned out to be easy but your mileage may vary depending on how fast the stream is running. Great hiking trail. Campsites spaced far apart. Mosquitoes sometimes a problem, sometimes not. Close to south entrance of Yellowstone. Campfire ok when I was there.

Colter Bay Campground Tent Village And Rv Park
Close to Jackson Lake and just 25 miles north of Moose, Wyo., the Colter Bay Campground is part of the Colter Bay Village area of the park. which is home to a general store, a museum, restaurants, a marina and opportunities to horseback ride, canoe and kayak. Despite its proximity to a ton of great services, the campgrounds 335 sites are tucked in a wooded area. There are 13 sites with electric hook-ups and a dumping station. There are showers at the campground. Open mid-May to late September, this campground requires reservations through recreation. gov. Prior to spring 2021, this campground was first-come, first-served. It has moved to a reservation model, so that travelers can plan a camping trip and hit the road to the park, knowing they have a guaranteed place to sleep with their reservation at a campground.
