Portable Fire Pits For Camping And The Backyard
Best for: Backyard campfires, car camping and glampingPacked size: 27 x 13 x 10.5 / 69 x 33 x 27cmWeight: 19.8lbs / 9kg
Weighing in at a moderately hefty 19.8lbs / 9kg , the BioLite FirePit+ is the heaviest option on our list, making it the least portable. This isnt helped by the lack of a carry case provided , though the carry handles do mean that its very easy to move from A to B over a short distance. However, for car camping and backyard campfires, when theres no need to carry it far, this innovative and unusual looking fire pit is hard to beat.
There are a couple of stand out features that we really love, even over the much loved Solo Stove Ranger. One of these is its cooking compatibility. Not only is there a good sized grill grate that has raised edges and can slide on and off the main burn chamber, but it also has a fuel rack that can be raised or lowered depending on whether youre using it to cook on or not. Plus, the shape of the burn chamber means that you get a really even heat spread from your charcoal up to the grill.

The Solo Stove Bonfire Fire Pit has an eye-catching minimalist stainless steel construction that can withstand rust and corrosion.
It takes our award of the most efficient wood-burning fire pit on this list because of its patented airflow construction. Vents at the bottom of the fire pit and the Bonfire stand ensure theres enough oxygen to start a fire and keep it going for hours.
The Solo Stove Bonfire Fire Pit will not leave your clothes smelling as smoky as other wood-burning pits. This is because the raised base plate and unique vents at the top provide additional fuel to the fire, ensuring all wood particles that would have caused smoke to burn to ash.
Its raised ash pan collects all ash falling from the base plate for ease of maintenance and cleaning. Its elevation also removes the chances of the lower vents getting clogged.
This fire pit stove does not offer as much warmth as others, because heat is pushed upwards instead of outwards. However, it is suitable for roasting some hotdogs and making some smores.
The UCO Flatpack Portable Fire Pit gives you the best of both worlds: comforting warmth and a hot meal on the grill.
These safety features make the Pop-Up portable fire pit one of the safest on this list.
Snow Peak Takibi Fire & Grill
The Takibi fire & grill is a muliposition grill that comes with a grill net, grill bridge, fireplace, baseplate, and carryingcase. This fire pit is perfect for car and RV camping because it super easy to set up and take down.
This stainless steal fire pit is also perfect for cooking because it allows you to get closer to the pit and flame. Its a little heavy, so I wouldnt recommend hiking with it, but it is portable enough to take just about anywhere. And its durability is second to none!
The major downside to this fire pit is the price. It is fairly expensive, but I will say that it is well worth the money. Out of all the fire pits on this list, the Snow Peak Takibi fire pit is one of the best for cooking! Great for family camping adventures, backyard camping, and much more!

Things To Consider Before Buying Best Portable Fire Pits
Cost of the Firepit
Considering the range of firepits in the market, you will find a wide variety costing different amounts. The cost usually depends on its size and its features. Simple firepits dont cost too much, yet they fulfill all basic requirements. However, those who prefer making a design statement and those who count on excessive features will have to increase their budget. A lot of people invest in fire tables and custom built pits. These are far more expensive than the simple models.
Not all places support open flames within their area. You need to know the laws and codes within your area before purchasing an outdoor fire pit. It is not advisable to use fire pits on covered porches, under low branches or in windy areas. Make sure you are aware of all the rules regarding open flames before youre fined for your ignorance.
Type Of Fuel
The common fuels used for firepits are wood, natural gas, propane, gel among others. A lot of buyers opt wood because of the fragrance that it brings. However, opting wood as your fuel would mean you would have to refill your supply constantly. You should also shape your firewood such that it can be accommodated into your pit. Propane and natural gas are more expensive choices of fuel, but they are neater alternatives.
Winnerwell Large Flatfold Fire Pit
Dimensions: 16.5 in. wide, 16.5 in. long, 8.9 in. tall | Weight: 9.1 lb | Fuel: Wood, charcoal
- Simple nested design is remarkably stable
- Stainless steel discolors after use
We were captivated when we first saw the minimalist design of Winnerwells Flatfold, and it didnt disappoint when we got hands on it. With no locks or latches, the two-piece fire pit seemed unstable, or even rickety, at first. But flipping the two parts open and nesting the bowl in the stand took under a minuteand they fit together very securely. We also tested an accessory table that raises the fire pit off the ground, protecting whatever surface its sitting onthat means no dead spots in the grass or burnt spots on the deck. The accessory table folds flat as well, and both pieces of the fire pit nest nicely in the top of it, making for convenient storage and transport.
We used small oak logs to burn a modest-size fire in the Flatfold, with foot-long logs fitting nicely within its 16.5 x 16.5-inch rim. Sitting around the fire pit, we felt heat radiated best with wood loaded just above the rim and flames reaching up to about two feet. While its available in sizes from small to extra-large, the version we tested was size large, which is good for providing heat for groups of four or five people.
