A common starting spot for one of the best hiking trails in Southern California, Manker Flats is a high-altitude campground near the peak of Mount San Antonioalso known as Mt. Baldy. The Manker Flats Campground offers rustic accommodations and easy access to the Mt. Baldy Bowl Trailhead, which offers a strenuous route to the nearby summit. All 21 sites are known to fill on the weekends at the Manker Flats Campground.

At Crystal Cove State Park Moro Campground your family will enjoy camping along the Pacific coastline. Enjoy 3.2 miles of Pacific coastline, plus wooded canyons, open bluffs, and offshore waters designated as an underwater park. There are 57 family campsites with picnic tables. Restrooms and showers are also available. This spot provides families with the opportunity to swim, bike, hike, walk, surf, sunbathe, and more. Crystal Cove State Park is considered to be one of Orange Countys largest remaining examples of open space and natural seashore. Reservation information is available online.

Big Bear Lake Campgrounds
Big Bear Lake is one of the most popular mountain destinations in Southern California, with great camping and recreation.
- Serrano Campground – The only campground right on the shore of Big Bear Lake is Serrano. Campers there are close to the Discovery Center and to marinas and other attractions.
- Group Campgrounds – Groups headed for Big Bear have plenty of sites from which to choose, some close to the lake, others tucked back in the forest.
- Green Spot Equestrian Group Camp – Although it has no potable water, the campground is close to many fine riding trails and can accommodate groups up to 25.

Lassen Volcanic National Park
Beyond its volcanic terrain, Lassen’s 160,452 acres feature stunning alpine lakes and meadows dotted with gushing waterfalls. Set up camp at one of seven seasonal campgrounds, like the popular Manzanita Lake, which includes tent sites and spiffy camping cabins, or Butte Lake, which offers the most seclusion. Summit Lake South Campground sits in the middle of the park, at the southern edge of Summit Lake, with picturesque views and access to the water. Dont miss the 2.3-mile roundtrip trek to Kings Creek Fallsit traverses a lush meadow and leads to dramatic, 30-foot cascades. Currently, the park is closed due to the Dixie Fire.
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
While you wont find many coastal redwoods at Elk Prairie Campground proper, the camps creekside sites offer quick access to Californias most striking redwood trails. From the parks visitor centera short stroll from the campgroundfollow the Prairie Creek Trail to the Cathedral Tree Trail which loops through a primeval forest of the parks most scenic redwood stands. Or, hop on the James Irvine trail which leads 4.5 miles to Fern Canyon, a dazzling, overgrown streambed bounded by towering walls of lush ferns and dripping moss.

Camping In California: South Fork Family Campground San Bernardino State Forest
South Fork Family Campground is located in a beautiful high-altitude fir/pine forest near the Santa Ana River in the San Bernardino State Forest. The primitive campground is open from mid-May to mid-September and has 24 sites , each of which can accommodate up to eight people. Unfortunately, you cannot book for this campground and access is on a first-come first-served basis. Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, and parking and toilets and drinking water are available. Day time activities include fishing, hiking, climbing, swimming, boating, and horse riding, and when the sun sets you can settle in for the evening and exchange campfire stories.

Leo Carillo State Park
Situated at the foot of Santa Monica Mountains, this place has a shady campground along with hiking trails. There is access to the nearby Malibu beach, offering recreational activities like swimming, surf fishing and windsurfing. The campers would certainly be delighted to explore the sea caves and reefs. It provides facilities like restrooms, showers as well as a telephone.

Russian Gulch State Park
Take in some of northern Californias most captivating, rugged coastlines just north of Mendocino at Russian Gulch. The state park has stunning landscapes that include windswept headlands , a leafy canyon that spans three miles, a glittering beach, and a 36-foot waterfall that cascades into a bower of redwoods. Campers can take their pick of 26 standard sites, one group site, and four equestrian sites on the northeast edge of the park. Take note: camping is available only in the summer.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
Sleep 5,000 feet above sea level in an oak forest with green meadows and rushing creeks in this mountain park 15 miles northeast of Alpine. While the Green Valley Falls campground is closed through August, the Paso Picacho Campground, with fire rings, flush toilets, and pay showers, is currently open. There are several good options for hiking that leave right from the campground, and nearby Lake Cuyamaca has fishing and boating. If you dont have a tent, you can reserve one of the parks cabins. The 12′ x 12′ cabins have full-size bunk beds, a wood stove, picnic table, barbecue, and fire ring.
Distance from downtown San Diego: 50 miles
Fees: $30 a night
Best campsites: Sites 6 and 7 sit farther off by themselves, making for a more quiet camp.
How early to book: Reservations are recommended for weekends. You can book up to seven months in advance on reservecalifornia.com.
Arroyo Seco and Granite Springs Primitive Trail Camps, Los Vaqueros Equestrian Group Camp, Dyar Visitor Center and Day-use, and Stonewall Mine Day-use are all closed but the rest of the park is open. Parking is very limited, and the other polices are the same as San Onofre and the other state parks.

Looking for a mountain view as you enjoy the great outdoors? Manzanita Campground located in the Los Angeles National Forest provides ample space for each campsite while also giving you the calming view of the mountains.
Located at 5,300 ft elevation this campsite provides two loops of campgrounds, Little Pines and Manzanita.
Each loop offers 40+ campsites so if you are going on a busy weekend and are concerned about finding space this is your best chance.
Campsite reservations are on a first come first serve basis. The wildlife is very active in this part of Southern California, so please be sure to place food in proper receptacles.
Manzanita Campground is great for first-time campers. You will be surrounded by other campers in case of an emergency. Plus it only costs $12/night.
During my first-time tent camping in Southern California, we could not set up a tent. Someone from a nearby tent graciously offered to help us put the tent up.
It is a bit crowded. Once you have some more experience camping, it may be better to head to a more secluded campground. One with more privacy.

Emma Wood State Beach
For WWII buffs, this park features the remnants of a WWII coastal artillery site. You can see the Channel Islands offshore. The train tracks with the Amtrak coastal trains are within this park.
Limited camping available for self-contained RVs only and its $40 a night. You will find primitive, dry camping so no restrooms, showers, hook-ups or dump station available.
Located 2 miles west of Ventura off U.S. Route 101.

No matter what, be sure to get your California campfire permit before embarking to any of these Southern California campgrounds.
If you dont want to deal with starting a fire, and youre planning on eating only freeze-dried meals, oatmeal, ramen, and other just-add-boiling-water dinners, you can get by with a lightweight Jetboil, which weighs in at less than a pound and is also great for making coffee in the morning!
If you want a more cooking-friendly set-up including pots and pans, check out this surprisingly lightweight Optimus camp stove that comes with a frying pan and cooking pot at under a pound of weight .
Note that during peak fire season, even things like the Jetboil may not be allowed please check with your local rangers regarding any fire restrictions.
Fuel: If bringing your own cooking gear, make sure you have plenty of fuel for whatever your backpacking stove set up is! And if youre doing a fire pit , research if you need to BYO firewood and kindling.

Crave something rustic and remote? This spectacular and little-known hike-in campground for backpackers willing to go the distance is located 45 miles north of downtown L.A. on the summit of 7,124-foot Mt. Pacifico in the Angeles National Forest. Relax under the pines, catch superb views of the Mojave Desert to the north, and make tracks on the nearby Pacific Crest Trail, which runs 2,650 miles between Mexico and Canada. This area was heavily burned in 2009s Station fire but has bounced back with grasses and wildflowers.

2. Crystal Lake Recreation Area
Palomar Mountain State Park San Diego County
Located at an altitude of 5,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by beautiful forests and meadows, Palomar Mountain State Park in San Diego County offers campers a delightful place to set up camp and get back to nature. The park offers 31 family campsites at Doane Valley Campground, each of which has a picnic table, fire ring, and running water as well as access to flush toilets and hot showers. Trailers and RVs up to 27 feet can be accommodated. You will find plenty of activities to keep you busy during the day hiking, fishing, swimming, and wildlife watching are all good, and when the sun sets you can gather around the campfire and count the stars.
