Dispersed Camping Near Eugene Oregon

Oakridge Green Waters Rest Stop

Dispersed camping on the Oregon coast | Thor’s Well, Tide Pools, & a GREAT campsite

Oakridge, OR

GPS: 43.739128, -122.459006

This is a rest stop with flush toilets and river access. This lot is near the highway, but the noise wasnt bad. The facilities were clean and this location is in close proximity to town and nearby mountain biking trails.

We tried several boondocking spots near Oakridge and got an uncomfortable vibe from most of the locations, near the railroad tracks. The rest stop was well lit and seemed much safer. There is a park adjacent that hosts music festivals in the Summer and Fall.

McMinniville, OR

GPS: 45.204028, -123.142602

Talk about a unique camping spot! Dry camping is offered for free in the back lot of the Evergreen Air & Space Museum. Parking is amongst airplanes and helicopters in a quiet corner of the property. Bathrooms are open during business hours and there are no facilities after the museum closes.

Hood River, OR

GPS: 45.419751, -121.530729

Hood River is a treasure trove of dispersed camping! We found a spot out in the middle of nowhere and we really enjoyed our time there. It was quiet, wild, and fairly easy to get to.

Remember to Pack-it-in and Pack-it-out when wild camping in National Forests and insure that your campfires are fully out.

Coos Bay, OR

GPS: 43.400069, -124.288338

There are no facilities here and it can get busy and full on the weekend. Some cars were left overnight with no problems. Much better and more affordable than the $75 KOA a few miles away.

Dispersed Camping In Oregon: The Rules Around Campfires

Wildfires are a huge problem in Oregon, and the penalties for ignoring fire restrictions can be severe.

Subsequently, campfires and charcoal BBQs are forbidden in state forests during Oregons fire season, which usually runs from July through to mid-October. Dates can change, so make sure to check before camping. You can see current fire information here and current area restrictions here.

If you have checked with local authorities and theyve said it is ok to build a fire then remember to only use dead wood that is no larger than wrist size, and to never leave a campfire or stove unattended it is illegal to do so. You will know your campfire is out if you can stick your hand into the ashes and they are cool to the touch.

Instead of building campfires, we recommend using a storm cooker. Then there is much less wildfire risk and you can cook knowing that the fire is contained. We believe the best ones on the market are Trangia storm cookers.

Rufus Landing Recreation Areacolumbia River Gorge

Image from The Dyrt camper Karina J.

If youre traveling along the Columbia River and need a place to stop east of The Dalles, the Rufus Landing Recreation Area is a convenient boondocking and dispersed camping site. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it has no designated sites but is rather a huge gravel parking area, meaning tent campers might have to plan to snag spots before RVers do.

Just because its a straightforward camping site doesnt mean it doesnt offer amenities, though. There are restrooms available just a short walk away, and theres a hiking access down to the Columbia River.

This campground is a simple gravel lot for drop-in camping. No fire pits or reserved spots. If youre going to a show at Maryhill or just need a place to crash along the highway this is a great spot. Has restrooms and river access! The Dyrt camper Karina J.

Coquille River Boat Launch

Bandon, OR

GPS: 43.163189, -124.362145

Nestled back in the corner of quiet Bandon, this boat launch parking lot is a perfect spot for a good nights sleep and exceptional wildlife viewing. We were 1 of 3 rigs parked here on a Sunday night and all was quiet. A government research boat was parked there when we were and it looked to have been there a while. Seemed like a very safe and calm spot to boondock.

There are vault toilets and picnic tables near the launch and great access to the Coquille River a few miles before reaching the coast. We used this spot to investigate the nearby mountain bike trails close to Bandon.

Dorena, OR

GPS: 43.627432, -122.703511

This little pull-out along a scenic back-road was a peaceful spot to relax and prepare for entering Eugene. Miners use this pull-out to pan and dredge for gold and black sand and have left several deep pools in the creek that are perfect for swimming.

The site was in poor condition when we arrived with shell casings and trash everywhere. We picked up and you should to. Trashing out such a beautiful area is really sad. We left it better than we found it as did the locals that hung out for a while.

The Rules For Dispersed Camping At Waldo Lake

The official term for boat-in camping at Waldo Lake is dispersed camping.

Allowed across most national forest lands, it basically means camping outside developed sites. It typically offers more solitude, and more interesting views, but without amenities such as bathrooms, trash cans and running water.

There are also a handful of rules and best practices in place to protect the lake, including:

1: No camping on Waldo Lakes islands.

2: Tents must be 100 feet from the water. That means no camping on the sand of beaches. You can camp near beaches, but in the forest at dispersed spots.

3: Dispersed campsites should already be established, with a patch of bare ground where you can put a tent. They often have a stone fire ring as well. Dont create new campsites by cutting trees or camping on vegetation.

4: Camp at least 100 feet from Waldo Lake Trail, which circles the lake. .

5: Camping isnt allowed in the wildfire-burned north end of Waldo Lake on the inside or lakeside of the Waldo Lake Trail. You can camp on the inland side of the trail.

6: Dispersed sites are first-come, first-served.

7: Leave no trace. That includes removing human fecal waste by burying it away from campsites or, better yet, removing it via many types of poop removal methods.

That sounds like a lot of rules, but in practice its really not. For the most part, the dispersed sites are obvious once you find them. And if you follow the shoreline carefully, youll come across them.
