Located just south of Encinitas,San Elijo State Beach Campground is half an hour from downtown San Diego.
San Elijo State Beach is well-known for being the home of a beautiful reef, meaning its a prime spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.
In fact, the state beach is right off the coast from Swamis State Marine Conservation Area, which preserves an entire ecosystem of kelp forests and reefs to help improve ocean health.
The campground is perfectly located right on the water and has easy ocean access.
Although its good to note that the beach here is a bit narrow and its important to watch out for large waves and rip currents.
One unique service that San Elijo State Beach offers is RV rentals, where you can have an RV delivered and set up at your campsite!
Or, if that isnt your thing, there are some hike and bike campsites and standard tent camping as well.
Reservations can be made here, up to six months in advance.
Camping On Public Lands
BLM-managed lands offer numerous opportunities for camping under the stars ranging from staying in an RV at a highly developed campground to simply throwing a sleeping bag on the ground in the backcountry. No matter what type of experience you are looking for, you can find it on BLM-managed public lands.
Developed Campgrounds
At many locations the BLM provides developed facilities for camping. Campgrounds may include a variety of facilities, such as restrooms, potable water, electrical hookups, picnic areas, garbage cans, tent pads and group shelters. However, many campgrounds do not have all of these amenities and may only have a picnic table and fire ring. Make sure to check the campgrounds website or call the appropriate field office when planning your trip.
Mission Springs Pct Trail Camp
Distance from SD: About 134 milesIf you really want to get away from it all, come out here. The only way to access this campground is by hiking there from the Pacific Coast Trail . There are two remote campsites out there that have nothing more than a picnic table and fire ring but plenty of fresh air and peace and quiet. You dont have to be hiking the entire PCT Wild-style to camp here, but you might get the chance to meet some interesting thru hikers who are resting for the night.

+ Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
189 RV and tent sites are available at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park with a maximum of eight people per site. Trailers are allowed to be a maximum of 27 feet while motorhomes can be up to 32 feet. Offering standard and premium riverfront sites, this crazy popular campsite is often fully-booked. Reservations open six months in advance, so if you want to stay here then make sure to book early. Each campsite comes with parking, a fire pit, grill, and a picnic table, while showers, toilets, and a dump station are only a short walk away. If youre looking to go camping with dogs in Big Sur, then Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park may be the perfect solution. When it comes to camping in Big Sur, its hard to beat Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Finding Free Rv Parking In San Diego
We listed some sites earlier but those sites, like any other ones you find in the city, is taking a big risk. The best place to find free RV parking would have been the big box stores, the casinos in the city, and similar places.
However, the last word is that San Diego bans overnight parking even on private property. You will see many RV owners taking the risk but if you are not lucky enough to hit the night the police are not issuing tickets for that area, then you will end up paying for the night anyways.
The thing to do, if you want a comfortable rest, is to go to one of the many campsites or RV resorts and pay their fee. that way you can relax, enjoy the beautiful San Diego views and sleep well.
That way you also have security watching over you and your rig while you sleep. That will ensure you are alert, wide awake, and ready to drive in the morning. While you may have found a nice city street that is partially hidden that is in a quiet neighborhood. A neighbor can and will call the police and direct them to you.

+ Kirk Creek Campground
This oceanside paradise has 34 campsites that all overlook the Pacific Ocean. Beach access and scenic trails are nearby, securing Kirk Creek as one of the best places to camp in Big Sur. Bring a tent or RV, but bear in mind while there are vault toilets, no water, dump station, or hookups are on-site. When it comes to the best ocean view camping in Big Sur, look no further than Kirk Creek.
King Range National Conservation Area
Also known as Californias Lost Coast, King Range National Conservation Area is situated 5 hours north of San Francisco off of US-101. Fir-covered mountains meet the rocky, rugged coast. Surfers, mountain bikers, and hikers will love the turbulent surf and the miles of trails along the tree-covered ridgeline.
Permits are required for overnight stays. It costs $6 to reserve a permit for a group of up to 5 people. However, if youre just going for the day or camping in one of the designated King Range National Conservation area campsites, you wont need a permit. Water is not available so make sure to bring your own.

Bucks Lake Road In Plumas National Forest
Heading west of Quincy on Bucks Lake Road in Northern California, you’ll reach Plumas National Forest, rich in tall trees and outdoor recreation.
Numerous forest roads along Bucks Lake Road have dispersed camp spots. One well-maintained forest road that has dispersed camping is called Slate Creek Road.
The spots along this road are very peaceful and private settings among the tall pines.
If you continue further along this road, there are also two free forest service campsites, Rock Creek Campground and Deanes Valley Campground, if you’d rather have a designated site and a vault toilet.
This area is an excellent option for free camping in California because of the many outdoor recreation opportunities nearby.
Follow Bucks Lake Road to reach Bucks Lake itself, a beautiful high mountain lake destination. Bucks Lake Wilderness is on one side of the lake and developed recreation sites on the other.
Camping on Bucks Lake Road can be as chill as you’d like, or you can take advantage of the hiking, swimming, boating, horseback riding, fishing, and OHV trails in this area of Plumas National Forest.
There are also some beautiful secret swimming holes to discover. And based on local tales, it might be a good idea to keep an eye out for Sasquatch.

BLM California manages many developed campgrounds and picnic areas in the state. Most campgrounds have use fees ranging from $4.00 to $10.00 per unit per night. Camping is allowed on Public Lands in California for no more than a period of 14 days within any period of 28 consecutive days, unless otherwise identified.

Laguna Mountain Recreation Area
Laguna Mountain Recreation Area is a hidden gem for free camping in Central California.
Here you’ll find dispersed camping opportunities, and there are also two unbelievably nice developed BLM campgrounds Laguna Mountain and Upper Sweetwater.
Each camp spot has a level RV pad with really nice shade structures over a cement pad with a picnic table and a fire ring.
There are also well-maintained vault toilets at each campground. We could not believe the price for such clean facilities in a beautiful area. There is a 14-day camp limit.
Laguna Mountain Recreation Area showcases a beautifully rugged landscape of oak forests, grassy meadows, and chaparral slopes.
A few lightly trafficked trails grant gorgeous vistas and even lead to waterfalls from Laguna Creek. While in the area, we recommend hiking to Laguna Falls.
The hike is full of beauty the entire way, and reaching the falls is a worthwhile adventure whether the falls are flowing or not.
And you can’t come this close to Pinnacles National Park without checking out the impressive boulders, rock formations, caves, and incredible vistas.

Is Blm Camping Free
Almost all BLM camping in California is free and requires no reservations or permits. However, you still need to abide by all rules posted, especially the Leave No Trace policy.
If BLM land is consistently damaged, the government will close it to the public. We want to keep these free camping options open.
Therefore, making sure you leave no trash and cause no damage to the land is extremely important. While camping is free, the rules keep the land beautiful and accessible for others.

How To Find Good Stealth Camping Locations
There are a variety of techniques I use to find a good stealth camping location in San Diego. I will spend a good two to three hours researching where I plan on staying.
I do not ever want to put myself in a situation where I have not planned on where Im going to spend that night.
Stealth camping research is not that hard. There are many tools and resources out there that you can utilize to help you narrow down a good stealth camping location.
The best tool is to ask other van and RV nomads where to stay. Most nomads understand how difficult it can be and stressful to find a good stealth camping location, so they are more than willing to tell you or give you ideas. Just do not take their spot if they tell you where they camp.

The Mojave National Preserve
At 1.6 million acres, the Mojave National Preserve is the third largest unit of the national park system in the contiguous U.S. and is under the jurisdiction of the BLM. It is roughly 1 hour south of Las Vegas by car, right at the edge of Southern California.
Incredible rock formations dot the landscape. This preserve has lots of mountains to trek and also sand dunes to hike. Impressive Joshua tree forests are found in parts of the preserve as well, and some of these forests are the densest in the world. You can also explore a ghost town called Kelso that used to be a railroad depot. Lets check out some pictures.

Dispersed Camping In San Diego: Mount Laguna
A list of places to dispersed camp in and around Mount Laguna in San Diego County, CA.
Mount Laguna is located in Cleveland National Forest and is part of the USDA Forest Service. To get there, take the 8 east and get off at the Sunrise Highway exit. Make a left off the freeway and head up the mountain. The Sunrise Highway has spectacular views any time of day and many spots to stop and view the mountain region or the desert. Its around an hour drive north and leads you to Lake Cuyamaca, the City of Julian and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
First up is Pine Creek Road. It starts a mile west of the Sunrise Highway. There is a campground just west of the junction of Pine Creek Road and Laguna Meadow Road. Camping is not permitted at Borrow Pit or Filaree Meadow. Besides the Adventure Pass, a free remote camping permit is required. A link to a printable version of the permit is available here. You can only camp for 14 out of every 30 days.
Next up is La Posta Road/Thing Valley Road. It begins 1/2 mile south of the Sunrise Highway. Camping is only permitted on both sides of the road north of Morris Ranch Road. Below Morris Ranch Road, you can only camp on the east side of the road.
