Camping And Lodging Near Our California Rivers
Most camping facilities charge a fee, but there is some free camping available near most of our California Rivers.
Free Campingis generally found in more rustic, less developed but nevertheless, beautiful campgrounds on public lands managed by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management .
Pay or Fee Camping, which is found on Park Service and private land as well as on Forest Service and BLM land, generally offers more amenities such as toilets, potable water, trailer pads and often hot showers.
Northwind Campground Eldorado National Forest
On the Ice House Reservoir within the Eldorado National Forest, this primitive campground offers more affordable campsites than the neighboring Ice House Campground. Campers from Sacramento can reach Northwind Campground in 90 minutes by car, making this scenic spot great for casual or extended weekend camping, with spacious sites and a feeling of solitude. Vault toilets are available at Northwind Campground, and visitors need to bring their own drinking water.

South Fork Rafting And Camping
The South Fork American River truly does offer something for everyone. Known to be the most popular commercial whitewater rafting destination in the west, you get just the right mix of all the things people love about California whitewater exciting rapids, beautiful scenery, interesting history and a location close to the San Francisco Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and Sacramento.
Hunting And Shooting Info
- All public lands located in MDM, T. 15 N., R. 9 E., Sec. 26 are CLOSED to target shooting.
- Hunting is allowed, in accordance with State law, unless a specific area is signed CLOSED by the BLM.
NOTE: All California game species are regulated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife .Rules, regulations, and seasons are controlled by CDFW, and it is the hunter’s responsibility to verify and comply with proper species, seasons, zones, regulations, and legal location if hunting on public lands.
FGC 3004 It is unlawful for any person to hunt or discharge while hunting, any firearm or other deadly weapon within 150 yards of any occupied dwelling house, residence, or other building or any barn or other outbuilding used in connection therewith. The 150 yard area is a “Safety Zone.”

Camping Near The South Fork American River
Camp Lotus: One of the areas oldest campgroundsstill family-owned and operated with lots of personality. This is no wilderness getaway, but the grounds are pretty, green, and welcoming. Some sites are more isolated than others so you might not be cheek-by-jowl with your neighbors. Hot showers, camp store, river access. Private boaters can use Camp Lotus as a put-in/take out spot and the popular kayaking play spot at Barking Dog rapid is just downstream. People rafting with a commercial outfitter are minutes away from their meet-spot. 622-8672.

Rancho Seco Recreation Area
Less than an hour southeast of Sacramento, Rancho Seco Recreation Area is centered around the 160-acre Rancho Seco Lake. Popular for water activities like boating, fishing, and swimming, the recreation area features boat rentals and hiking trails on the shore.
The campground at the recreation area includes 32 tent campsites and 18 spots to park an RV, with electric hookups available. It’s a popular family destination throughout the year, and reservations are available online.

Camping On The South Fork American River
There are a few options for camping along the banks of the South Fork American River. Many of these are privately owned campgrounds that cater to the whitewater rafting community. Government parks and public lands are generally considered day use only, with a few notable exceptions in the more remote regions of the canyon.

Paradise In Pilot Hill
Welcome to Paradise, a 32 foot Outdoor RV travel trailer. Enjoy amazing views, fire pit and a propane BBQ. The one bedroom trailer is out fitted with top of the line linens, cookware and outdoor tableware. Paradise is located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills on a 5 acre horse ranch. Peninsula Campground Folsom Lake Recreation Area
One of three campgrounds surrounding the Folsom Lake reservoir, the Peninsula Campground features 100 family-friendly campsites in a remote setting. The campground is just over an hour drive from Sacramento, including a curvy nine-mile road from the small community of Pilot Hill. Another popular approach to the Peninsula Campground is boating across the lake and mooring on the shore. The campground can accommodate trailers and motor homes, though no hook-ups are available.
Many of the campsites at Peninsula Campground are universally accessible, as are the shower and restroom facilities. Potable water is also available at the Peninsula Campground. Even with plenty of sites available, it’s not uncommon for the campground to fill up entirely on warm weather weekends reservations are available online.
Two boat launches and an expansive day-use area are located near the campground, and campers can easily access the shore from their campsite.

Pleasure Cove Resort & Marina Lake Berryessa
Just over an hour drive west of Sacramento, Lake Berryessa is the largest lake in Napa County and a very scenic place to spend the night. Numerous campgrounds and resorts line the shores of this massive reservoir, including the aptly named Pleasure Cove Resort & Marina. Alongside over 90 tent camping sites and an additional 20 sites specifically for RVs, Pleasure Cove also features lakeside cabins and houseboats for rent.
Farther west along Lake Berryessa, the Steele Canyon Campground features 80 campsites that accommodate tents or RVs. Campsites at both Steele Canyon and Pleasure Cove feature picnic tables, fire rings, and access to potable water.
Heading north along the lake, Putah Canyon Campground features an additional 100 sites with similar accommodations.

Camping On The North Fork American River
Planning a whitewater rafting trip? There are several options for camping near or on the North Fork American. Primitive designated campsites are available in Auburn State Recreation Area by reservation. Wilderness camping is available by permit only. There are also a few public campgrounds near the North Fork of the American River.

Rv Heaven At The American River Resort
American River Resort has 15 unique RV spaces with full hookups with 30 amp power, water, and sewage. An additional 10 RV sites are available with power and water. We have a dump station located at the exit so youre welcome to dump your tanks on the way out! Each RV Site comes with additional space for tents, as well as a private fire ring and picnic table. We are located in the historic town of Coloma and along the beautiful South Fork of the American River. American River Resort offers adventure and relaxation in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills.
Campers love our RV sites because they are private and unique! The Resort is not a typical RV Park where RVs and Trailers are lined up a few feet away from each other. The RV sites vary in size and layout and are tucked into and between groves of oak trees. The sites are located on a rise above the American River and there is a good mix of pull-forward, back-in and drive-through sites. If you are not entirely comfortable backing into your spot, our staff are happy to help you get set up in your site.

South Fork American River Rafting
“The South Fork American is one of the country’s premier recreational and historical rivers. Known as one of the most popular commercially rafted rivers in California, the South Fork has natural beauty and whitewater rafting for almost everyone.
South Fork American River rafting is not recommended for inexperienced rafters, kayakers or inner-tubers . The South Fork is Class III with some tricky and potentially dangerous rapids. The river gradient is a steep, exciting 30 feet per mile in the upper gorge from Chili Bar to Trouble Maker, easing to 9 feet per mile through the Coloma Valley, and becoming 33 feet per mile through the lower gorge.
The South Fork of the American is unusual in that most of the land along the river is privately owned. Homeowner’s, commercial rafting companies, private boaters, ranchers, anglers and picnickers all share this beautiful river. Rafters may stop on public lands along the river, which are marked by blue signs.”

The South Fork of the American is also quite rich in Gold Rush history. As you float down the upper stretch of the South Fork you’ll notice the ditch running along river left. The ditch provided irrigation water to the Coloma Valley. You’ll pass through Marshall State Park and Sutter’s Mill the site that marked the beginning of the gold rush when John Sutter first discovered gold.

There is a full private bathroom with tub and shower and kitchen area in each cabin. With a full-sized sofa bed in the living room and twin roll-away bed, these cabins comfortably sleep up to 4 guests.

Camping Near The Lower American River
Beals Point Campground is located in the Folsom State Recreation Area, near hiking and biking trails and, depending on water levels, fairly close to Folsom Lake for sunbathing if youre into brown leathery skin, and of course water skiing and toodling around in a kayak. There are car camping style sites, as well as areas for RVs and trailers. No hook ups, but plenty of room for kids to run around and holler so dont expect to hear the crickets.
Peninsula Campground is also part of the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area and can be accessed by car via Pilot Hill or by boat, if youre feeling expeditionary. Car, RV and trailer camping is available. No hook-ups but there is a dump station. For more details visit the California Parks website.

River Front And River View Sites And Their Location
American River Resort has many river side and river view campsites that vary in size and capacity. Find your perfect spot on the river campground map. Now featuring riverside platform cabin tents.
The River Front sites overlook Troublemaker rapid with fantastic views of the river and the whitewater action. Most of these sites are under shaded oak canopies. River access is a very short walk down multiple trails that take you to various vantage points along the river. The River Front sites are numbered 14/15/16/22/23/24/29, as indicated on the campground site map.
The Direct Access River Front sites are located upstream from Troublemaker Rapid at river level allowing river access directly from your site. These Direct Access River Front sites are numbered 31/32/33/34, as indicated on the campground site map.
River View sites are nestled below or perched above the riverfront sites in front of Troublemaker Rapid. These sites have various viewpoints of the river. The River View sites are numbered 1/2/3/4/5/6/11/12/13/18/20/21/25/27/28, as indicated on the campground site map.

Sly Park Recreation Area
With nearly 200 sites available, Sly Park Recreation Area is on the edge of the Eldorado National Forest, an hour’s drive northeast of Sacramento. Owned and operated by the El Dorado Irrigation District, the campground is centered around the scenic Jenkinson Lake, where activities like fishing, boating, and paddle sports are common. Other popular activities at Sly Park Recreation Area include hiking, barbecuing, and having bonfires in the designated fire pits.
A popular family campground on the weekend, the 190 campsites at Sly Park are spread out between 10 different campground areas. Sly Park caters to tent campers and RVs up to 40 feet in length, and special sites at the recreation area include waterfront sites and a “Pine Cone Strip” area that books up fast for summer weekends. Reservations are available at Sly Park, and some sites are known to book a year in advance.
