A Brief Introduction To Dorena Lake
The lake is located in rolling, partially wooded hill country. Its three parks offer boating, swimming, sailing, fishing and water skiing. Schwarz park located downstream of the dam, offers overnight camping for families and groups. Overnight camping is also available at Baker Park on the south side of the lake. The lakeshore is managed for wildlife habitat as well, including many species of birds and animals. Dorena Dam controls the Row River and reduces flood stages downstream on the Willamette River.
Dorena Reservoir is a reservoir on the Row River in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is located 6 miles east of Cottage Grove.The Dorena Dam in front of the reservoir was completed in 1949 as one of the 13 dams of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the Willamette River’s basin.Set at the south end of the Willamette Valley and criss-crossed by the Coast Fork Willamette River and its tributary the Row River, the area was susceptible to periodic flooding from large rains and snow melts in the surrounding mountains prior to the construction of the dam.In the 1940s the United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction of dams which created Cottage Grove Lake and Dorena Lake. Dorena Lake is a popular summer vacation destination. Amenities include Baker Bay Marina and Schwarz Park campground. Visitor estimates top 80,000 people annually.

There are more covered bridges in Lane County than in any other county west of the Mississippi. Cottage Grove is known as the Covered Bridge Capital of The West, with six beautiful bridges in or around town, still standing today.
As quoted by Visit Cottage Grove:
Oregons covered bridge architecture dates as far back as the 1850s. Early pioneers built the bridges out of necessity with high-quality timber, which was more accessible in the area than costly steel and concrete. To preserve the bridges, houses were constructed over the timber trusses to protect them from the damp Western Oregon climate.
The heyday of covered bridge building in Oregon occurred between 1905 and 1925 when there were an estimated 450 covered bridges in the state. By 1977, this number had dwindled to 56. Cottage Grove is proud to keep the history and architecture of covered bridges alive.
