If youre looking into your RV-friendly campground options close to New York City, the first place youll hear about is Liberty Harbor, just across the river in Jersey City. After that, people mention Black Bear Campground, 60 miles north of Manhattan, and a couple of KOAs that are even farther away.
Im not sure why Croton Point Park, in Croton-on-Hudson, doesnt make more of the lists. Its considerably closer and cheaper than Black Bear , directly on the train line, and it offers lower pricing, more spacious sites, and more amenities than Liberty Harbor. If you want to be as close to the action as you can get, Liberty Harbor is definitely your best, but if youre willing to trade a bit of proximity for full hook-ups and some room to spread out, Croton Point Park is a great option . You also dont have to navigate Jersey City with your rig, which, having driven there with a minivan before, was a big selling point for me.

While conservationists are balking that long-term RV living at Croton Point is inappropriate, Sleepy Hollow native Frank Lingardo is hunkering down for a second winter in Westchester County Executive Rob Astorinos trailer park along the Hudson.
In fact, Lingardo just plumbed his Raptor SE for a washer and dryer and has plans to install a dishwasher. He has framed in his propane tanks to keep out the cold from his two-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom recreational vehicle. He’s been there more than a year. Though Lingardo owns houses in Croton-on-Hudson and Wappingers Falls, he rents them out and shares the RV with his son and dog.
Its a great way of living, said Lingardo, who has a county parks pass and pays $600 a month to hook up with water, sewer and electric. Id love to keep this spot forever.
A growing number of conservationists, however, have raised questions about year-round living in the 500-acre park, which is a destination for bird watchers, dog walkers, model-airplane aficionados and folk-music enthusiasts.

BEGINNING next month, the county’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation will offer indoor accommodations for vacationers at Croton Point Park.
”This is an innovation for our department,” said Stephen Nickerson, an employee of the department. ”Until now, this park has been made available for overnight stays only for those with tents or trailers. Starting next month, the Parks Department will go into the housing business for the first time.”
There will be 19 units available, from well-protected lean-tos to cabins. Originally, the small structures had helped house a music camp and more recently they were used as part of a camp for retarded children. The buildings are being renovated to accommodate campers who want on-the-ground housing.
”We expect that our new program will represent the first phase of providing indoor housing at the family-camping complex,” said James E. Arles, the department’s deputy commissioner in charge of park facilities. ”Interest in living close to nature keeps mushrooming. We plan to keep pace with the times.”
The department will make seven lean-tos and 10 cabins available this season. Rates will range from $75 a week for lean-tos to $175 for what is called a ”deluxe” cabin, which will be the one that has built-in bathroom facilities.
