The location of the find – in Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area, in the Bridger-Teton National Forest – can be seen on the map above. An autopsy is due Tuesday, CNN reported.

A massive missing-person search was launched on September 11, when Petito was reported missing following a road trip with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie.

Laundrie returned to their Florida home on September 1 without Petito. From the combined postings of their social media accounts, it appears the couple had traveled through reserves in Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

This map summarizes the various spots from which they appear to have posted, or were heard from:

Pending forensic confirmation of the identity of the body found Sunday, Petito’s last known location was believed to be somewhere in the vast Grand Teton National Park.

This is on the western boundary of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, where the body was found.

The area around the Spread Creek campsite has been closed until further notice, according to Denver’s FBI officers:

Petito’s family said via their lawyer that news of the find is “heartbreaking,” and have asked not to be disturbed by media while they process this development.

If you want to find your own spot , I recommend you do the following:

  • Once you have decided on an area, use Google Maps satellite view to scout a potential camping spot. Look for clearings off forest roads or sand banks on rivers and lakes. Place a pin in all the spots you see. Half of them might not be accessible.

  • Ask Google for the directions to the pins from your home, just to get a feel for the road access. You may have to zoom in and out a few times near your pin to make sure there is a forest road connecting the main roads to your pin.

  • Copy the coordinates of your favorite spot and open caltopo.com in a new window in your browser. CalTopo is a backcountry map which offers an overlay feature including a topographic map of the country and many useful details about the conditions of the area you wish to explore. FreeRoam app and PublicLand app are great on-the-go alternatives for a quick overview of public land). Paste the coordinates into the search field and enter. Bureau Of Land Management Free Camping Guidelines

Here are guidelines from the US Bureau of Land Management for dispersed camping:

    • Camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities is referred to as dispersed camping. Most of the remainder of public lands are open to dispersed camping, as long as it does not conflict with other authorized uses or in areas posted closed to camping, or in some way adversely affects wildlife species or natural resources.
    • Dispersed camp sites are located along most secondary roads and may not be marked. Popular locations can be recognized by the telltale flat disturbed area that has been used as a camp site before. Not all flat spots are sites. If possible, please use existing sites to avoid creating new disturbances. To further protect your public lands, campers must not dispose of any refuse, hazardous materials, sewage, or in any manner pollute the surrounding area.

General Safety Advice For All Types Of Camping

There are so much to mention safety wise that I cant possibly cover it all. But remember that you need to be more or less self-sufficient for any type of rural camping. That extends to the obvious such as water, food and gas, but also first aid readiness, driving/mechanic skills and weather precautions. You are also limited to where your car will take you. Most cars can travel on forest roads, but some roads are in such bad conditions that you need an off-road vehicle of some kind. Most trail rated Subarus and Jeeps do fine, but you have to check with the local ranger before relying on making it all the way. Road conditions worsen quickly, especially after heavy rain or snow melt, so take caution and plan your route.

Always check the fire restrictions before you plan to cook all your meals over the fire. The summers get hot and dry and there are often fire bans in action, even for designated sites with fire rings. Always carry extra water, sunblock, chargers/battery pack and blankets/jackets and good boots . And always leave your coordinates/planned destination and route with family/friends/coworkers along with a planned return time. Be smart and come prepared.

    Happy Camping!!
