Drive along north side of river is long, then cross over for the last few miles. Last 1/2 mile scoots up the side of the hill. Maybe okay for RV. At the campground, RV would have to park on open grass area across the dirt road from the campground. Putting a 25 RV into a camp site might be physically possible , but it would totally dominate the entire 5-site campground.

The hottest temperatures reported in Kings Canyon climbed over 100 degrees Fahrenheit .
Those high temperatures usually occur in the height of the summer, though high temperatures can continue through the end of September. Winter brings the coldest temperatures, with an average of 34 degrees Fahrenheit in January.
The temperatures can fall even lower in December. If you want to experience the warmest temperatures, plan on visiting Kings Canyon in June through August.
Kings Canyon National Park Hiking Trail #1 Mist Falls
I would rate this trail as moderate, and it is 8.7 miles long and has very heavy traffic. It is located in Hume, California, and you will get to experience features like waterfalls and mountain scenery. From May to October, you can choose to use this trail for backpacking and camping. The waterfall was charming and also the whole hike in general. The only thing I didnt like were the bugs and gnats make sure you carry insect repellant with you. We also got to see some snakes on the trail, but they immediately went back into the woods, so we were safe. Make sure that you are always aware of your surrounding, no matter how great the trail is.

Kings Canyon National Park Hiking Trail #3 General Grant Loop Trail
This is one of the most accessible trails I got the chance to go on. It is .07 miles long and heavily trafficked. It features a river, and no matter your skill level, you will love this trail. I found that the trail was well maintained, and I got to enjoy the National Christmas tree view. If you visit the Kings Canyon National park with your family, you should go on this trail. You will get to enjoy views like the fallen Monarch tree and the Gamlin Cabin.

The Best Camping For Large Rvs
Directly in Sequoia, Potwisha Campground is an example of how a larger RV can limit your experience in these national parks. While Potwisha can accommodate 30 long RVs and trailers, if you dont have a smaller vehicle that can detach from your home on wheels, you wont be able to drive up the gorgeous, but daunting, road to the Sequoias themselves. If you have brought a smaller ride, the experience of leaving the scrub oak foothills and ascendingsnow-capped mountains in the distancethe road to the grove that holds General Sherman himself, the largest of the Sequoias, is jaw-dropping. This campground also provides for easy access to Three Rivers where youll find basic supplies, a few restaurants, and more RV camping options if youre not terribly concerned with being directly in the park itself.
Entering the twin parks from the north, however, your options open up significantly. In the Grant Grove areajust as you enter Kings CanyonAzalea, Crystal Springs and Sunset Campgrounds all accommodate larger RVs and position you perfectly for visiting General Grantthe second largest tree in the world behind General Shermanand the Kings Canyon Visitor Center. All of these campgrounds, including Potwisha, are dry camping only, so no hookups, however flush toilets and water are available, and the occasional wisp of cell service trickles through them. Reservations are recommended in all but Azalea Campground, where its first come, first served camping only.
Do I Need A Reservation To Visit Kings Canyon National Park
To visit the park, you dont need a reservation, but you will need to pay the $35.00/vehicle fee or purchase the America the Beautiful Pass, which is $80 for the year and gets you into all the national parks.
Regardless of your choice, I recommend buying your pass online ahead of time to save time at the entrance station.

With low and affordable rates, its not surprising that so many people stay at the Blackstone North RV Park. You can stay for just one night, but discounts are available for those who stay for a week, month or longer.
The price that you pay includes free access to cable and WiFi as well as water, sewer and trash removal. All sites feature metered electric to ensure that you only pay for the power that you use.
This campground is a great choice for those who want to stay near Kings Canyon National Park but plan on visiting other local attractions too.

For backcountry and wilderness permits, you need to stop by a visitors center such as the one in the Foothills area.
This center has a number of exhibits and displays that let you learn about the parks history and pick up brochures on things you can do during your trip. The center also shows films about the park and offers books for sale on the park.

Free Kings Canyon National Park free campsites area in the tress alongside Dinky Creek Road. This area is packed during the height of the season. Rangers visit regularly and will enforce the 14 day rule.

A few good spots visible from the highway but off a ways. Ranger came through here just about every day. We had a small camper van and found good spots to level it out. About 8 fire rings around, well spread out. We went on 4th of july weekend and there were at least 2 available spots despite the pay spots down the street being completely booked up.
Kings Canyon Camping Reservations
Kings Canyon camping reservations are not quite as competitive as other nearby parks, especially if you can manage to camp during the weekdays. We highly recommend trying to visit the park in the shoulder season when crowds are less and the weather is beautiful.
That said, if you want a campsite during the summer months on a weekend, it is recommended that you mark your calendar and get ready well in advance. Individual campsites are released on a 6-month rolling basis
Reservations open at 7:00 am PST. For busy weekends, you will need to be ready and waiting before 7, with your Recreation.gov account logged in.

When Is The Best Time To Camp At King’s Canyon National Park
As a general rule, the best time to camp in King’s Canyon National Park is from June until mid-September. However, it’s important to note that the campgrounds listed above are at different elevations, ranging from 3,000 feet to 6,500 feet the higher you go, the cooler the temperatures.
The campgrounds are always busy when school is out. For a quieter experience with greater availability, come in September or late August.

The site Very quiet and secluded. The sounds of the rushing river are very relaxing. I went in late August and it was HOT! Hot and dry. Luckily the river was a wonderful way to cool off. Make sure to bring a lot of water. No fires in the area at the time I went and you can see why. The trees and dry grass in the surrounding area would burn very fast.

Other Campgrounds Near Kings Canyon National Park
Kings Canyon is only a short drive from Sequoia National Park. However, if youre looking to stay in Sequoia National Park instead, seven campgrounds are available there.
The surrounding Sequoia National Forest has plenty of campgrounds to offer too. The Hume Lake Ranger District lies between Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park.

Kings Canyon National Park Hiking Trail #5 Paradise Valley Trail
This trail was pretty hard, and we sweated a lot it is 29.3 km long and should be hiked by people with experience. No matter the hardness of the hike, the view was to die for, starting with the waterfall. When we hiked, it was a bit warm, but we still made it up. The definite highlight was mist falls, and it was so breathtaking. Dont also forget to bring bug spray because you will encounter lots of gnats. There is also some smoke as you go up, but it is worth it.

Getting To And Around Kings Canyon National Park
There is only one way in and one way out of Kings Canyon and thats California Highway 180 from Fresno. It will bring visitors into or out of the park. However, if traveling from Sequoia National Park, Highway 198 will bring you to Highway 180 and then into the park. The roads are winding and steep in places, and in winter snow chains may be required.
Once inside park boundaries traveling is very simple. You will first pass through Grant Grove and then Cedar Cove. The road ends with a loop around Kanawyers.

Booking Kings Canyon National Park Camping
South Fork Campground does not require reservations, and Potwisha and Azalea campgrounds do not require reservations in the off-season. For all other campgrounds, due to the popularity of Kings Canyon National Park, its recommended to book as soon as possible within the 30-day window prior to your intended camping visit. All campsite reservations can be made at the recreation.gov website.
Kings Canyon And Sequoia National Parks Attractions And Activities
Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks are filled with scenic wonders and great places to explore. Campers at Princess Campground are located not far from Grant Grove, Hume Lake, and Cedar Grove.
- Drive over to Hume Lake for swimming, kayaking, and fishing.
- Join in Ranger-led Programs at Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, Wuksachi Lodge, and John Muir Lodge.
- Try your luck fishing along the Kings River in Cedar Grove or hike to Mist Falls.
- Take advantage of a free shuttle to key sites in Sequoia’s Lodgepole and Giant Forest area .
- In Sequoia, visit Crystal Cave, climb the trail up Moro Rock, stand before the towering Sherman Tree, and visit the Giant Forest Museum.

Kings Canyon Camping Options
The aim of this page is to give you honest, local advice about Kings Canyon camping.
As Gary was the manager of Watarrka National Park for many years, he knows a thing or two about camping at Watarrka.
And we can tell you that options for Kings Canyon camping are a lot more limited than they should be!
This will hopefully change now that the park is jointly managed by the NT Parks & Wildlife Commission and Aboriginal Traditional Owners.
At present, however, it is illegal to camp in Watarrka National Park.
There are no camping areas or facilities, and bush camping is forbidden. Although some people do camp, they are risking a fine from the rangers if they are caught.
Please dont upset the rangers who work very hard to keep people safe and the park clean and world class by camping in the park.
They have better things to do with their time than chase silly buggers in camper vans out of the sunset viewing area!
Basically, you have two options for Kings Canyon camping:
- Camp legally and pay
- Camp outside park in the road reserve
Camping Near Kings Canyon
If you were unable to secure camping reservations at the various campgrounds in the parks, dont fret as there are many other options for camping near Kings Canyon. On the Generals Highway, the road connecting Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park there are a couple of options worth considering, especially if you plan to spend time in both parks. One campground worth checking out if all options are full, but that we have not listed below is Dorst Creek Campground. Additionally on the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway heading down into the canyon from Grant Grove, there are a couple of places to consider.

Private Campgrounds Near Three Rivers
Just outside the park’s south gate is the town of Three Rivers. You’ll find several campgrounds and RV parks in the area:
Sequoia RV Ranch: They have RV sites and can accommodate all kinds of recreational vehicles. Some of their sites are on the river. If you don’t own a trailer, they have one for rent.
Three Rivers Hideaway: The hideaway has over 40 Rv and tent sites, and three cabins and they say they’re the closest RV park to Sequoia.
Kaweah Park Resort: The resort is near Lake Kaweah, with RV hookups and tent sites. It’s a bit west of Three Rivers near Lake Kaweah
Lemon Cove-Sequoia Campground: It’s on Highway 198 near the small town of Lemon Cove.
Visalia/Sequoia National Park KOA isn’t as close to the national park as its name implies but instead is about an hour’s drive west of the nearest entrance gate. It’s a well-equipped park with lots of spaces and amenities.
Visalia/sequoia National Park Koa Journey
There arent many fully equipped campgrounds in proximity to Kings Canyon or Sequoia. If youre looking for full hookups on the northwestern side of the two parks, closer to Kings Canyon, this KOA is your best bet. It will take you a bit over an hour to get to the park, but do you have the convenience of all the amenities available. Following State Route 180 will take you into the park and point you in the direction of the famous General Grant Tree for great photo opportunities. If youre looking to stretch your legs after the ride, the Viola Falls Trail is just under 4 miles long and doesnt get too crowded.
