Gear You Need For Free Camping In Texas

Overlanding from San Antonio to Austin, free camping in a city park!

Start with your normal familycamping checklist before adding other important gear into the mix.

Magnolia Beach City Park

Best Camping Spots Around Austin Do512 Family

Location: Port Lavaca, TX

Why Youll Love it: Maybe were being redundant, but this is a killer waterfront campsite! You can park on the beach and watch the waves roll into your front yard.

While this site offers no hook-ups, they do have a great bathroom & shower facility. They are cleaned daily and well respected by fellow campers. This is definitely peaceful beach camping with enough space to spread out and have some privacy. The sound of the waves is much more calming here than on Padre Island. However, the wind has been intense throughout our stay.

Whats the Word: Paul & Gin on Campendium say, We had seen reviews and watched a lot of YouTube videos on Magnolia Beach but was not sure if it would live up to expectations. We have had a very relaxing and nice stay here. The beach is clean, people have been very nice and it has not been crowded. The best part is that it is free camping.

Camping in Texas Vibes: 9.3/10 This is better than waterfront camping, this is straight up beach camping!

Why Is Free Camping In Texas So Hard To Find

The reason for the lack of free camping in Texas dates back to 1845 when the United States wanted Texas to join the union.

Texas would only agree to statehood if it got to keep most of the 225 million acres of unsettled land that was legally owned by the Republic of Texas. The feds agreed.

When you get to Texas youll find it harder to enjoy the kinds of free Bureau of Land Management and U.S. National Forest campgrounds found in other western regions.

The Lone Star State can be tough on a campers budget, but thankfully youll find some free locations to take a load off your wallet. Just point your rig to the 21 different Texas Wildlife Management Areas that allow overnight camping.
