Is Devils Lake State Park Haunted

With a name like Devils Lake, y0u would think there are tons of stories about people meeting their maker and coming back to either warn others about it or to bring them along with them.

There are a lot of stories about unique animal sightings, from a monster in the lake to even seeing a large alligatoreven Bigfoot gets a turn.

My favorite? The 10-ton ghosts of Baraboo, who were said to be deceased ghost elephants that roamed the area. After all, Baraboo was the home of the Ringling Bros. Circus and there is a long history of how those poor elephants were treated in circuses. .

As for human ghosts, there is the old hitchhiker that walks along the old highway 12 on the south-west side of Baraboo. If you dont offer him a ride he will show up further down the road. And again

If you stop for him, he vanishes.

He wears jeans and an old army jacket let me know if you ever see him!

Of course with the effigy mounds across the parking lot from the nature center, there are rumors of Native Americans being spotted too.

Balanced Rock Devils Doorway East Bluff Potholes And Grottos Trails

We drove to the south beach parking lot and hiked a loop which included all of the trails listed above. We started at the Balanced Rock trail. It was a great way to see a lot of great views all in one hit. I dont even know exactly how long we were hiking, at least a few hours. We heard that the trails can get pretty busy so head out early or later to avoid the crowds .

I wouldnt recommend the Balanced Rock & Potholes trails for anyone with really young kids because they are steep and can feel pretty strenuous. It was about 95 degrees the day we were there so we got crazy sweaty and had to stop often for water and shade breaks but the views are SO worth the effort! Be sure to bring water, snacks and sunscreen. It definitely took us longer to hike than we expected it to.

What Are The Best Hiking Trails At Devils Lake

Best is subjective, of course, but the trails along the bluffs are the most popular and are often packed with hikers on summer weekends.

The 1-mile Tumbled Rocks Trail, which runs between the base of the West Bluff and the lake’s eastern shore, is the park’s most popular, according to the DNR website. The roughly paved trail offers great views of the lake.

The trails on the East Bluff also are popular since they lead to the most well known rock formations: Balanced Rock and Devils Doorway. The trails are narrow in spots be prepared to wait for others to pass on busy weekends .

The quickest but most difficult way to get up the bluff is via the Balanced Rock trail that departs from the south shore. The .4-mile hike is steep, with many stone steps. Balanced Rock, a formation that resembles a top, is about 100 feet south of the trail about halfway up.

That trail connects with the East Bluff Trail, which follows the bluff top and includes a short side trail to Devils Doorway. The formation, which resembles a doorway, has two columns of rock topped by a few others standing more than 30 feet tall. The lake is visible behind the formation, along with the setting sun in the evening, making for an especially picturesque view.

People like to climb on the formation, but without the proper safety gear and experience, it can be dangerous. People have been seriously injured falling off the cliffs at the park.
