Red Rocks Nevada Camping

Camping | RED ROCK CANYON CAMPGROUND (Las Vegas, NV) | Exploring with Leah

Unfortunately, there are no campgrounds within Red Rock Canyon, but there is one small campground just outside of the conservation area called Red Rock Campground. The campsites here are relatively open and exposed, with the exception of a shaded awning.

Honestly, its not the best desert camping type of environment, say, like those youll find in Joshua Tree National Park.

While camping in the area, I much preferred to wild camp elsewhere, either along the south side of the conservation area off of Route 160, or a bit further off along the shores of Lake Mead on Federal land that offers free, dispersed camping.

This can vary for every show at Red Rocks, so be sure to ask one of the many staff members where your ticket gets you. Often GA will be the first few rows in the front and top, while the center rows are saved for reserved seating. Sometimes the entire place is GA, and sometimes the entire show is assigned seats. Enjoy Desert Plants And Wildlife

Not only can you see the famous Joshua Trees here, but its a place where you can spot wild burros , coyotes, tortoises , bighorn sheep, and much more.

The desert is usually thought of as a desolate wasteland, but it is actually a spectacular and beautiful place. Sometimes the best thing to do in a place like this is nothing at all. Maybe it is time to slow down, sit out, and quietly enjoy the landscape, so you can hopefully spot some animals, and watch as the light changes and new colors emerge in an already colorful place.

Perhaps this is the most powerful aspect of nature, a chance to disconnect from our frenetic, chaotic world. In that sense, nothing could be further from Las Vegas than Red Rock Canyon, which is, ironically, just a short distance away.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Boondocking Spots Lovell Canyon Campground

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

AddressElevation: 5085

Management: Bureau of Land Management

Free dispersed camping -> No Reservations. The road into this Red Rock Canyon free campsite area is dirt.

Best Review:

This is area is loaded with Red Rock Canyon free boondocking spots., including group spaces. No amenities. There are camping spaces all along the Lovell Canyon road. Some are good for RVs as well as tents. This area is higher in elevation than Las Vegas so its always about 15 degrees cooler. Theres usually a little snow on the ground during the winter. The Lovell canyon road is paved but all the roads off of it are dirt. There are great hiking trails all up and down Lovell Canyon.

Heading back to San Diego from Idaho got into Vegas and it was 113F at 6pm? Knowing it was going to be cooler in the mountains I looked up and found Lovell Canyon. It was also 88F??.Lovell Canyon Rd.is a paved road off the NV state rd.160 leads way back into the area with many campsites, dirt roads and trails. You can camp right off the road or you can head down one of the dirt roads and hide if you want. Great place, free camping up to 14 days and free natural air conditioning. The night I stayed it dropped down to 67F at around 1 am while Vegas was still 100F.No campfires or charcoal grills allowed at the time I stayed due to high fire danger.

Know What To Bring Inside

At some point, you need to decide to leave the Red Rocks lot scene and start heading into the amphitheater. My plan of action is to start heading in at least an hour before the show starts. That gives enough time to make the trek, get situated in our seats and reconnect with friends. Heck, I even have time to use the bathroom, fill up water, grab a beer and enjoy a bite to eat before the show gets started.

Before you head into the Red Rocks concert venue:

  • Clean up after yourself. Red Rocks isnt just a concert venue. Its a beautiful recreational park, and we want to leave it that way. Dont trash the parking lot.
  • Give yourself plenty of time. The walk to the entrances at Red Rocks can take awhile, so dont forget to grab a cold one for the trek and the line. If you parked in a lower lot, youll probably be periodically breaking to catch your breath. Once inside the amphitheater, be prepared to walk up another hundred stairs or so to get to your seat.
  • Grab everything you need. Once youre in Red Rocks Amphitheatre, youre in. Theres no re-entry at Red Rocks plus, your car is way further than you think it is. Make sure you have everything you need before you walk away from your car.
  • Childrens Discovery Trail And Lost Creek Canyon The Best Hike In Red Rock Canyon

    Red Rock Canyon Campground, NV

The Lost Creek/Childrens Discovery Trail at Red Rock Canyon is a wonderful interpretive walk to do with kids. Its an easy-to-follow route with great views, petroglyphs, and, during December and April, a waterfall.

What makes this one of the best hikes at Red Rock Canyon is that its a mini history lesson that all ages will enjoy. Along the way, youll learn about the 800-year-old rock etchings, the geology of the Mojave Desert, and Red Rocks flora and fauna.

    3. Childrens Discovery Trail and Lost Creek Canyon, the best hike in Red Rock Canyon

Besides being one of the few Red Rock Canyon waterfall trails, this path is right off the Scenic Drive. So, you can hop out of the car and hike this short route before continuing your journey along the paved road.

I highly recommend doing this hike in the spring so you can appreciate the wildflowers and waterfall. Also, be sure to stop and check out the pictographs along the way!
