Why I Love Dispersed Camping

  • Its free! Theres really nothing more to add to that lol.
  • Peace & quiet & PRIVACY Most of the time, youre completely alone! Most people either dont know about them, or dont want to stay somewhere without bathrooms and a potable water source. And, even if there are other people around, like the case at Joshua Tree, Ive found that the free sites tend to be more spaced out than traditional campgrounds. This means youre probably likely to spot more wildlife, too!
  • No paperwork or registration Theres no need to apply for these sites . Theyre pretty much all just first come, first serve. This means you can also decide on a last minute trip and not have to worry about snagging a spot before you go!
  • Helps prevent overcrowding Having access to free, often less used sites, gives overly popular places a bit of a break!
  • Pets abound There arent as many rules regarding pets in dispersed camping sites, so you can bring Fido with you. Some do state that you have to keep them on leashes, so be sure to pay attention to that.

Assateague Island National Park Maryland

Assateague Island National Park calls for careful planning and packing of necessary gear in preparation for the harsh habitat of the barrier island. Reservations for campsites can be made up to 6-months in advance. Guests can choose between oceanside spots or campsites on the bayside of the narrow strip of sand and dunes. The highlight of the park is the two herds of wild horses that inhabit the island, descendants of 17th-century horses brought to the area by colonists dodging livestock taxes. The campground is open year-round and can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs but there are no hook-ups or dump stations on site.

Lake Louisa State Park: Hiking Fishing Really Nice Cabins

30 minutes to Disney via secondary roads

The campground at Lake Louisa State Park was sparse and seemed lonely when I visited, so you might opt for one of the well-appointed cabins on a hill overlooking a scenic lake.

This is one of Floridas newer state parks, situated in a sea of rolling hills covered with citrus trees. The park itself is a former citrus grove that was acquired by the state, and parts of it are still maintained as a working grove by local farmers.

The campground was sparse when I visited, but it was giving rise to low-lying vegetation between sites, so its probably worth another visit. There is no swimming in this park, a downer in summer, but the cabins are equipped with central air.

The parks 20 cabins string out along a ridge overlooking the lake, and they are quite comfortable with two bedrooms, two baths, a dining/living room and a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, dishes, pots, pans and silverware. Linens and towels are also provided. Every cabin has a screened deck with a picnic table and rocking chairs. No TVs, but the view from the porch is beautiful.

Two of the parks six lakes are accessible for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and there are more than 20 miles of off-road trails for hiking and cycling with another 7 miles of park roads.

Pets are allowed in the campground area, but not in the cabins.

What Are Dispersed Camping Sites What To Expect

Dispersed camping sites are free camping spots with little or no facilities.

Sometimes there are only one or two sites to actually camp on, so be sure to get there early. However, there are some spots with campsites a plenty!

When there are only a few spots available, we usually leave rather than ask if we can camp with the people already there if theyre taken. However, you can always ask.

These sites are often located off of dirt roads so its helpful to have a high clearance vehicle and/or 4 wheel drive. Not always necessary, but certainly helpful. I used to take my CRV everywhere until it got stolen and it didnt have 4 wheel drive but having high clearance was really nice!

So, be sure you bring your own toilet paper and several trash bags. Its good to have extras as back up! Also take lots of water , a washbin, and biodegradable soap.

Bureau Of Land Management

The Bureau of Land Management is a government agency that manages land primarily in the western United States, and generally in open, desert landscapes. The BLM manages land for a number of uses, including recreation, grazing, logging, and resource extraction. Free camping on BLM is usually capped at 30 days, but can be shorter or longer depending on the location.

BLM land is suitable for RVs, vans, and sometimes for tent campers. Because of the variety of uses on BLM land, you may wake up with a herd of cattle or a band of sheep in your campsite, so it pays to do a bit of research ahead of time to know what you might find.

How to Find Free BLM Camping on Campendium

  • Use a text search to zoom into the area youre interested in.

Can I Still Camp At A State Park If I Don’t Have A Camping Reservation

Campsites are by reservation only. However, you are welcome to reserve a camp onsite at the park if there is one available. At some parks, a number of campsites are set aside for onsite registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please be aware that without an advance reservation, you cannot be guaranteed a site for more than one night, unless you are using a site specifically set aside for onsite registration. Each state park posts a list of sites available for onsite registration and updates the list at least once daily. The lists are posted on a campground information sign that also gives instructions on how to complete onsite reservation. Specific onsite reservation procedures may vary from park to park.

Manatee Hammock County Park: Near Kennedy Space Center

1 hour to Disney via expressway

This 27-acre RV and tent campground on the Indian River Lagoon is shady but often crowded because its just a short hop to the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

And thats exactly why you might like it.

Ive camped at this park a few times and love the location and the price, just $26 a night. Theres plenty of shade, and while the sites are close together, they still beat the bumper-to-bumper spacing in many private campgrounds.

The shoreline park offers a 197-foot fishing pier into the Indian River Lagoon, a playground and a great view of Kennedy Space Center rocket launches. A kayak launch also provides access to the lagoon for paddlers.

The parks swimming pool is a great summer escape.

Pets are allowed, and theres even a leash-free zone for fido to play.

Surfing mecca Cocoa Beach is just down the road a piece, and your kids will go crazy shopping at Ron Jons Surf Shop at any time, day or night.

Other than the Kennedy Space Center, one advantage this campground has over the others on this list is its proximity to many great restaurants at nearby Port Canaveral and historic Cocoa Village.

While youre here, you may well decide you havent had enough of the Mouse, so go for a cruise aboard a Disney-themed cruise ship from nearby Port Canaveral.
