Great Place To Camp Near Stowe And Mt Mansfield

We spent a couple nights here on a roadtrip through the Northeast. The campground was well maintained, restroom facilities were nice and our walk in tent site was very private. All of the other sites sites also appeared to be spread out nicely. Stowe is a short drive away and the campground was also close to a lot of nice hiking trails.

We had some cablin Fever on the Monday we were visiting, and even with the snow it was a great place to visit. We snowshoes around and plopped ourselves down for some Nosh. Plenty of great dogs around to ogle or play with if they so please 🙂

Most of the people who visit Vermont never make it to the bottom of the pass road. Half of those who do unhappily discover that their truck, camper, or RV simply cannot make the turns and switchbacks.If you have small enough vehicle, and have the hutzpach, driving to the top is really cool, especially when the summit is still snow-covered.Smugglers Notch State Park is really cool, and as the weather is will determine how long you spend up on top.Going down the other side to Jeffersonville is a nice ride, and the ride around to Stowe can be very enjoyable as well.

Mount Mansfield State Forest

Mount Mansfield State Forest covers 44,444 acres in seven towns in Chittenden, Lamoille and Washington counties in Vermont. The towns are Bolton and Underhill in Chittenden County, Cambridge, Johnson, Morristown and Stowe in Lamoille County, and Waterbury in Washington County. Mt. Free Camping At A Distillery In Vermont

Does sipping on a nice beverage sound better than roughing it in the wilderness? Vermont Distillers has a parking lot where you can stay the night for free after sampling their wares. While it’s just a large level parking lot, the price is right.

Nearby, Wilmington is a perfect example of small-town Vermont, too.

Camping Policies & Rules

• Maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles per site
• For campsites, lean-tos, and cottages: check-in is between 2pm and 9pm. Check out is by 11am.
• For cabins: To allow adequate time for cleaning between visitors, check-in time has been shifted to 4pm and check-out time to 10am.
• To prevent the spread of bugs to the forest, firewood is not to be brought to parks UNLESS the wood is packaged, labeled as having been heat treated, and certified by USDA or the appropriate state department of agriculture. Visitors arriving with firewood will be asked to exchange all firewood for an equal amount of park-supplied firewood.
• Generators may only be run from 8am to 10am and from 4pm to 6pm
• Quiet hours are from 10pm until 7am
• Visitors to campers must register and pay the regular day use fee. Visiting hours are 10am to 9pm

Minimum/ Maximum Nights

There is a 2 night minimum for advance reservations except for Green River Reservoir or Waterbury Reservoir remote sites.

• People travelling to the park under their own power or camping in a group camping area may make 1 night reservations.

All parks have a maximum stay of 21 nights.

• Pets are permitted in all campgrounds for a per-night fee
• Pets must be safely confined or on a leash no more than 10 feet in length
• Please respect others by keeping your pet’s barking to a minimum

Closed For The Season September 20th 2021 See You In 2022

YOU MAY RESERVE THE ENTIRE CAMPGROUNDEveryone is eager to get out of the house and we all miss seeing our friends and family in person. In response to the pandemic restrictions, we have developed an attractive option to provide the safest possible camping experience at the BRC in 2021. Basically, you can rent the entire campground or 1/2 of the campground for a two-night minimum stay. Your group/groups would decide on who is to be included to avoid their exposure to strangers. We prefer limiting campers to only Vermont residents and we may require them to be vaccinated. Groups must comply with the VT official restrictions on travel/size of gatherings and BRC guidelines on acceptable campers.

MID-MAY TO MID-OCTOBER Weather Permitting The camping season here runs only mid-May to mid-October, roughly 20 weeks, so the reservation calendar may fill up quickly. Some flexibility is possible on length of stay around major holidays like the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Columbus Day when there is maximum demand for camping.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?This BRC web site provides a good virtual view of the property and facilities, though it is impossible to capture on a computer screen the beauty and calm atmosphere of the riverside setting. The waterfall and swimming hole, the group campfire site in the open field, and peaceful flow of the river all have to be experienced in person. We will welcome exploratory visits by potential group organizers once we get past mud season.

Using The Interactive Campground Maps

On each park page, there is an interactive map for that park. Clicking on a campsite on the map will bring up a photo of the site as well as a detailed description.

• Accommodates: Explains what size tent RV will fit on the site. Tent size is expressed in small, medium and large. RV length is expressed in feet.
• Maximum Occupancy: The maximum number of people permitted per site. For most sites, the maximum number of people is 8, but some smaller sites have a maximum occupancy of 6.
• Access: Describes whether a site is drive-in or walk-up. Most sites are drive-in, but some sites require campers to park below and then walk up some stairs, which is important to know for hauling gear and wood.
• Sun: Sunny, shady, partial shade, etc.
• Surface: Fine gravel or grassy.
• Water Access: Describes access to swimming area . Sites are coded as waterfront, water view, walking distance, driving distance or none.
• Pets: Explains whether or not pets are permitted on site. All campgrounds permit pets but pets are not permitted in some cabins, and park not permitted in cottages or picnic pavilions.
• Universally Accessible: Describes whether the site is accessible via wheelchair.

Primitive Camping On The Long Trail

One of the many amazing aspects of the Long Trail is its shelter and privy system. With over 70 designated overnight sites, you can plan to reach a shelter every night, but sometimes things dont go according to plan you may have pushed yourself too far and are not able to make it to the next shelter or maybe a shelter is full or you may prefer peace and solitude over a busy overnight site. This leads you to primitive camp, also known as no trace camping or dispersed camping. The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources defines primitive camping as camping in a forest with no developed facilities and leaving the site with little or no evidence of human visitation. Mount Mansfield Loop Trail

Mount Mansfield Loop Trail is a 11.7 kilometer heavily trafficked loop trail located near Underhill, Vermont that features beautiful wild flowers and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Where To Camp At Smugglers Notch

Smugglers Notch State Park campground is in the Mount Mansfield State Forest, a 44,444-acre expanse perfect for outdoor pursuits. The winding road to the park slithers through the Green Mountains and is marked with 1,000-foot cliffs and fallen rocks. Beware of tight curves and thin roads on this senses-tingling drive.

The campground has 20 tent and 14 lean-to sites. Tent sites range from $20-$22 per night for out-of-staters, while lean-tos are $29 per night, plus a $7 reservation fee. Most plots are walk-in only and not accessible by vehicle. Due to the narrowness of Route 108, very few spots can accommodate RVs.

Campers can enjoy a new restroom facility with flush toilets, running water, and coin-operated hot showers. Firewood and ice can be purchased on-site.

Free Camping In Green Mountain National Forest

400,000 acres of pristine hardwood forest, the kind that glows verdant all summer long and erupts into a masterpiece of autumn artwork come September. This is where you’ll find the majority of free camping in Vermont. Paved, winding roads loop the national forest, and old barns, covered bridges, and small villages alike help guide the way.

Dispersed camping at Bear’s End, near Somerset Reservoir, promises plenty of camping opportunities as well as a chance to bust out the kayak and explore the water. This is boondocking, true forest camping, so don’t expect a formal campsite and bring everything you needincluding drinking waterand note that not all forest roads are suitable for all RVs. If you’re car camping or just looking for tent sites, this is prime real estate, with hiking trails and endless beauty easily accessible from any of these spots. Nearby, Kelley Stand is another option.

Another spot loaded with nearby outdoor activities which also involves rutted dirt roads to get to is Michigan Brook Road. You’ll find more places to camp in a handful of locations along the road. No reservations are required. All of these areas are first-come, first-served.

In the southwestern corner of the national forest, Mt. Moosalamoo is layered in even more opportunities to gain a little elevation and turn your free camping dreams into a reality!

VEHICLE RESTRICTIONS!

The access road is NOT suitable for vehicles over 19 in length or those towing a trailer over 14 long . The turning radius off and onto VT. 108 makes entry and exit unsafe for longer vehicles and we CANNOT accommodate such vehicles.

Loose gravel and possible ruts require careful use of motorcycles and bicycles on the driveway.

At the summit of Smugglers Notch, VT. 108 is not plowed to remove snow and that section of the road is closed from around mid-October to mid-May. Check www.511vt.com for current conditions in spring and fall before traveling through Smugglers Notch. Road closure signs are posted and barriers erected on the road beyond the ski areas on both sides of the Notch.

Variety Of Hiking Trails

Mount Mansfield, Vermont features several different hiking trails that can take you high up the mountain. Hazelton Trail begins near Mt. Mansfield Base Lodge and heads up towards the Visitors Center.

The Hellbrook Trail is one of our favorite hikes. Start out at Smugglers Notch Road and climb .7 miles before deciding whether to continue the remaining .3 miles or take the Hellbrook Cutoff route, a .7 mile trail that ends at The Chin. Finally, the Long Trail is a popular route that winds along Mount Mansfield and throughout the region. While this aptly named trail is quite rigorous, you can explore small stretches of the trail, which also connects to other trails in the area, such as Cliff Trail and the Hellbrook Cutoff.

Underhill State Park Campground

The Underhill State Park Campground is small, quiet, and secluded. Perched on the western slope of Mount Mansfield, it provides some of the best access to Vermont’s tallest summit without the overbearing tourist traps found on the east side near Stowe.

The campground has 11 walk-in tent sites and six walk-in lean-tos. There are an additional seven lean-tos and two tent sites reserved for organized group use about three quarters of a mile away from the main camping area. Pets are allowed, and the restrooms have cold running water and flush toilets. Each site features a picnic table and a designated campfire ring. Rates vary between tent and lean-to sites. Tent sites begin at $18 per night, while lean-to sites begin at $25 per night. There is an additional $2 fee for non-residents of Vermont and a $1 fee per pet per night. Sites accommodate four people with an additional $5 per additional person per night with a maximum of eight people per site.

Underhill State Park features four trails that lead to Mount Mansfield’s 4,300-foot summit. The 3-mile Sunset Ridge Trail is the most popular, but the Laura Cowles Trail, Halfway House Trail, and Maple Ridge Trail are all worthy endeavors.

The campground also features a large day use picnic shelter with a fireplace and picnic tables. It seats up to 50 people and can be reserved on weekends for $100 per day. From Monday through Thursday day use is free.

When To Climb

The normal hiking season in the Vermont extends roughly from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Winter conditions above treeline are harsh, but for those with the required knowledge and experience a winter ascent of Mount Mansfield can be a wonderful experience.

The upper 1.5 miles of the Mountain Road to Underhill State park is not plowed in winter. Also plowing on VT 108 stops about 0.3 miles south of the Long Trail.
