Painted Hills Dispersednear John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

Image from The Dyrt camper Eva W.

While camping within John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, including the Painted Hills Unit, is not allowed, there are plenty of dispersed camping opportunities in surrounding BLM and Forest Service lands, some of which are along the John Day River. You wont have any trouble finding a wonderful spot near these remarkably colorful hills, one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

This was by far my favorite place we stayed on our entire 4000+ mile road trip. and it was free! We stayed at Priest Hole, which is a few miles past the Painted Hills visitor center on dirt roads. We camped right on the banks of the John Day River and it was amazingly beautiful. The water was the perfect temperature for swimming and crystal clear. The Dyrt camper Corinna B.

Resources For Free Campsites:

We have just featured a highlight of free campsites that are found across the Northwest in Washington & Oregon, but there are many more that are available. Here are some of the resources we found for finding free campsites in the Northwest for you to see if there are more options in an area you want to check out.

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Lands This is a great resource as its an official state resource with information about a variety of lands, including areas that are available for camping. Just pick a region, county or area to start checking out whats available in those areas.

Bureau of Land Management Website This is another official resource for BLM lands. You can select camping as an option to search & then the area & it will give you a list of places to camp you will then need to go thru & find which ones are free.

Campendium Website features free campsites for across the country including listings for Washington & Oregon plus reviews from readers who have gone to these campsites. This is more of a community-driven website, so you may want to try to confirm these locations with another website such as the WDFW Lands website.

Free Campsites.Net This is another site that is community-driven, with reader reports & reviews, but Id encourage you to also try to confirm these with another website such as the WDFW Lands website.

Smith River Falls Campground

Location: Near Reedsport

Smith River Road, which starts just east of Reedsport, is lined with several free campgrounds, including Smith River Falls Campground.

Just a mile down the road from Smith River Falls, this small BLM campground has 10 first-come, first-served campsites. The campground is typically open from Memorial Day until the end of September.

It takes roughly an hour to reach Smith River Falls from Reedsport. The cascading waterfalls are a very popular swimming hole in the summer. Although the campground itself doesnt have access to the falls, it does have easy river access for swimming as well as a boat launch.

The campground is a bit of a mission to reach thanks to relatively steep, winding, sometimes gravel roads , but all vehicles, including RVs and trailers, should be able to make the drive. But the tight campground roads themselves and the smallish campsites limit camping to rigs under about 30 feet long.

Smith River Falls Campground is usually relatively peaceful, even when full, but is known as something of a local party spot on summer holidays and weekends. Visit midweek if you prefer quiet.

Pro Tips:

Smith River Falls Campground is an awesome Oregon Coast free campground but know that theres a ton of additional camping nearby. In addition to countless dispersed campsites just off Smith River Road, take the time to check out nearby Vincent Creek Campground and Fawn Creek Campground, both free BLM campgrounds.

Blm Coos Bay District Restores Access To Bastendorff Beach

Gnat Creek Campground

North Bend, Ore. With the lifting of public health and safety restrictions enacted by the State of Oregon and Coos County officials, the Bureau of Land Management today announced that the Coos Bay District is increasing recreational access. The Bureau of Land Management is working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a case-by-case basis.

Beginning May 18, 2020, the Coos Bay District will reopen access to Bastendorff Beach Day Use. The restrooms on site may take additional time to reopen.

In addition, the following recreation areas and activities continue to be available:

  • Blue Ridge Trail System
  • North Spit of Coos Bay, including the trail system
  • Doerner Fir Trail

With public health in mind, the following facilities/areas remain closed at this time:

  • Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area
  • Storm Ranch at New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern
  • North Spit Boat Ramp
  • All campgrounds

While these areas are accessible for visitors to enjoy, a return to full operations will continue to be phased and services may be limited. When recreating, the public should follow local area health orders, practice Leave No Trace principles, practice social distancing and avoid high-risk outdoor activities.

Neat, clean, beautiful and staff was above and beyond

Overall very beautiful park, great staff and of course watching the Elk walk by was a nice addition. My only concern was the road at the check in. It could use a good drop of gravel to fill those mud holes

The best option for free camping near the beach is in the manynational forests along the shore. The Siuslaw, Rogue-River Siskiyou, andTillamook State Forests are all located along the coast.
