About Chattahoochee-Oconee National ForestThe 750,194 acres of the Chattahoochee National Forest are in northern Georgia, and the 115,476 acres of the Oconee National Forest are in central Georgia. Within the forests are campsites, picnic areas, wilderness areas, trails and the Chattooga National Wild and Scenic River.
The Chattahoochee National Forest includes the southern part of one of the world’s most extensive and productive hardwood forests. Its Cohutta Wilderness, covering some 35,268 acres, is a popular area for fishing, hunting and hiking.
Also in the forest are the twin cascades of Anna Ruby Falls, where two creeks converge before running into Unicoi Lake and on into the Chattahoochee River. Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area offers several hiking trails, including a quarter-mile-long paved trail and one with Braille signage, a visitor center and picnic areas. The Anna Ruby Falls Information Center has exhibits and information about the history and natural resources of the area as well as a trout-viewing pond and trails. Closed Christmas. Phone 878-1448.

Energy Use And Production
Georgia’s electricity generation and consumption are among the highest in the United States, with natural gas being the primary electrical generation fuel, followed by coal. The state also has two nuclear power facilities, and , which contribute almost one fourth of Georgia’s electricity generation, and an additional two nuclear power plants are under construction at Plant Vogtle. In 2013, the generation mix was 39% gas, 35% coal, 23% nuclear, 3% hydro and other renewable sources. The leading area of energy consumption is the industrial sector because Georgia “is a leader in the energy-intensive wood and paper products industry”. Solar generated energy is becoming more in use with solar energy generators currently installed ranking Georgia 15th in the country in installed solar capacity. This trail is also a dog-friendly hiking path.

Spread across 27 counties and 4 ranger districts, the protected Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest makes up a great deal of North Georgia, just north of Atlanta. The Chattahoochee National Forest encompasses the Blue Ridge, Chattooga River, and Conasauga Ranger Districts, while the Oconee Ranger District lies within the Oconee National Forest.
Rabun County in eastern Georgia holds 148,684 acres as the largest portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Catoosa County in northwest Georgia comes in as the smallest portion of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest at around 6 acres. Note: acreages are approximate.

Desoto Falls Recreation Area
Desoto Falls Recreation Area is a U.S. Forest Service Campground located approximately 2 hours North of Atlanta in the North Georgia mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Desoto Falls offers visitors year-round recreation opportunities including camping, fishing, picnicking, and beautiful hikes to our nearby waterfalls. The campground is situated along Frogtown Creek with at an elevation of 2,080 feet above sea level, under a dense forest of deciduous and evergreen trees. 23 campsites are neatly arranged in two loops, with each loop having creek sites. The climate here is fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it is a wonderful place to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a playground for wildlife watchers. An abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear and, small furbearers can be seen as well as bird watching. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, come to Desoto Falls.
A dumpster is located near site #3 for all bagged trash to be disposed of. Amenities include a picnic area, picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, lantern posts, drinking water, flush toilets, water hydrants, water front sites, and garbage service.

Spring-fed Lake Conasauga, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is Georgias highest lake at 3,000+ feet above sea level. In the Oconee National Forest, the man-made Lake Sinclair spreads across 15,330 acres and produces hydroelectricity through the Georgia Power Company. Falling from 729 feet along 7 cascades, Amicalola Falls in the Chattahoochee National Forest is Georgias tallest cascading waterfall and its breathtaking.

Feel The Mist From Georgia’s Tallest Waterfall
While you’re by Springer Mountain, don’t miss Amicalola Falls. The highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River and the tallest in the state, Amicalola drops 720 feet to put on a spectacular cliffside show. Hike the Amicalola Falls East Ridge Trail, an enjoyable, 2-mile there-and-back walk, to experience the crest of the falls before descending stairs alongside the water. The trail takes you to the bottom where you can take in the full view.

A change to single-member districts has resulted in the African-American minority being able to elect representatives of its choice.
