The Piney Woods of East Texas is home to a diverse array of flora that makes it one of the best places to see fall colors in the state. Camping In Texas In Summer

Panoramic I took while camping at Inks Lake, near Austin ...

The summer months bring huge numbers of vacationers to the Lone Star State so be sure to book your campsite well in advance. It gets warm out there folks so your best aim to get a site near the water if possible and bring a great summer tent.

All the activities outlined above for spring are still available but water sports and water activities become even more prevalent in the summer heat. With canoeing, water-skiing, swimming, tubing, and more, there is a lot of fun to be had in the Texan waters.

It has been said that summer camping in Texas is not recreation but a test of character. If you do not come prepared for the searing heat, that may well be true.

Rain is rare but the climate can be unpredictable all the same. Temperatures during the three months consistently sit around the 90F mark. It is particularly dry out West and tends to cool down considerably at night.

Out East tends to be significantly more humid with very little respite. These, of course, are factors that must be considered before deciding on your destination as they can play a key role in your overall enjoyment.

There is no reason to fear the Texas heat but our advice is to be prepared. Below are our top tips to help you enjoy camping in Texas in the summer.

Stay Hydrated – Make sure you have access to plenty of water and stay hydrated. If you are heading off on an afternoon of hiking, be extra careful. The heat combined with exercise means that the typical 5-8 glasses per person might not be enough.

The Scenery Is Breathtaking

Texas also has some of the most beautiful scenery in the South. In addition to waterways, hills, mountains and canyons, winter brings along its own sightseeing agenda. Depending on the part of the state you are staying in like the Texas Panhandle or West Texas you might see snow-topped mountains, or a light dusting across a quiet canyon.

Since many outdoor destinations will be less busy during the winter, you also have a better chance of seeing wildlife, such as:

  • Deer
  • Mountain lions

Wellax Ultralight Air Sleeping Pad

As important as the sleeping bag is to stay warm, the sleeping pad is just as important for just basic comfort. I happen to feel like most sleeping pads are as advanced for car camping as backpacking, but by all means, if you just plan on packing your car only get an air mattress. Otherwise, this ultralight option will do you just fine.

If the ground is already cold the last thing you want to do is sleep on it. A mattress pad will elevate your bag and create an additional layer for comfort. If you prefer to sleep with a pillow, NEMO makes fantastic products to rest your head.

Lake Bastrop South Shore Park

38 miles eastGoings-on in Austin dont seem to matter much at Lake Bastrop, where it feels like LBJ could still be president, as he was when the LCRA built a dam on Spicer Creek to create a cooling pond for a new power plant. Piney thickets surround this placid lake. The views are of dense green thickets on reed-lined banks. A low hum from the power plant is the sonic backdrop to the chucking and squabbling of coots and ducks. The lake is popular with local fishermen, as the LCRA keeps it well stocked with Florida bass, catfish, crappie, and perch. Try your luck at a pier, or rent a canoe and drift around the numerous shallow inlets. Of the two parks on Lake Bastrop, South Shore is the larger and has better camping and amenities. There are lakeside cabins, a playground, and a swimming area. The short Heron Trail loop goes from the campground around Lewis Point, and a sandy 4.5-mile track, great for biking as well as hiking, leads through the woods to the North Shore Park. Multiuse sites, cabins

Pro tips: Get a campsite with waterfront access . Some are very close togethergood for multifamily campingbut for privacy, choose No. 12.
