How We Picked And Tested
To find a range of containers that work for a variety of needs we researched a total of 82 bins and used these criteria to narrow the field:
Holds a lot: We considered bins that would neatly and securely hold a variety of items and stack without wobbling. Organizer Beth Penn told us to look for the squarest bins possible to maximize the space inside.
Widely available: A helpful storage bin is one thats easy to buy. Some popular bins were hard to find, so we focused on containers sold by multiple retailers or sellers with reliable inventory. Sometimes you need to see a container in person, so we also looked for options that could be picked up in store.
Easy to carry: We tested for handles that didnt hurt our hands and lids that didnt dig into our stomachs when carrying a full box.
In 2015 we tested 11 bins for our 2019 update we tested 21, in a range of sizes. Over the years weve simulated flooding and water leaks by hosing the bins down, submerging them in a kiddie pool, and leaving them out in the rain overnight. Weve dropped them and tossed them down flights of stairs . If a container survived those tests, we filled it with household goods to see how much it held, if it closed when overstuffed, if it stacked securely, and how comfortable it was to carry. We filled clothing boxes with sweaters and hoodies, noting how much the boxes held and how easy they were to pack and empty.

A Note About Labeling
We recommend investing in a label maker. Labels are easy to remove and replace if you decide to repurpose a box. If you still prefer writing on the bins, we suggest dry-erase markers instead of Sharpies, particularly on clear storage containers. A quick pass with a wet wipe or magic eraser will take off the marker so you can reuse the box. Penn also suggests keeping an index inside the closet so youll never forget what youre storing.

Can You Store Water In Any Old Plastic Bottle
The tendency is to think plastic is plastic. But its not. PVC plastics can leach toxins into water over time. Not good. Polystyrene is sometimes used by take out joints to hold drinks but it too can leach toxins into whatever beverage its holding. Its also an environmental nightmare. If youre looking for a safe type of plastic into which you can place potable water for the long term you should be looking for High Density Polyethylene or HDPE. Its the safest type of plastic to store water in.
Polypropylene will also work. Thats the stuff that margarine tubs are made of. Less desirable but still useful is low-density polyethylene . This stuff is okay in a pinch but isnt typically recommended for water storage since there are other, better options available. Also, remember that while it may be tempting to store water in old soda bottles, plastic has the ability to absorb flavors. So your water could wind up tasting line Mountain Dew or Coke.

When I first started camping, it was in a four-door sedan. Packing space was tight, so if I was going to bring anything more substantial than a nalgene, it had to fit in my camping box. There are some drawbacks to the UST Roll-Up Water Carrier, however. First off, the same characteristics that make it easy to roll up also make it excessively difficult to fill, as the back of the water container must be pulled away from the front side to create space for the water to flow into the container. At one campground, where there was nothing other than an old-fashioned style water pump, it was impossible for a single person to fill it up. Next, youll need to bring along some rope or twine to tie this to a tree branch, as this is easiest to use when hung up, but the attached handles dont lend themselves to hanging without additional reinforcement. Finally, the position of the spigot is high enough up the carrier that its difficult to get the last liter or so of water out.
Categorize Your Camping Gear
Categorizing your gear really comes down to trying to keep like items together. For example, it could be a real hassle if you are looking for your kitchen gear and it is spread out between 5 different storage containers. Additionally, Ive found that similar items tent to pack together better and ultimately save space.
When categorizing or sorting my gear I dont get too granular, I keep it to broader categories. The categories I use for the most part are
- Kitchen
- Tools
- Miscellaneous
Those categories obviously dont cover everything but it also doesnt need to be perfect. Generally, just group things together so they can be packed in the same place. I find this helps to keep the gear organized and easy to find.

Maintenance & Care For Your Water Storage Containers
Fill your containers with warm water almost to the top, but leave an inch or two of air inside . Add a squirt or two of dish soap, preferably Dawn or similar, then seal it. Shake thoroughly. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then pick it up and shake it again.
Pour out all of the liquid and rinse it out a few times to get rid of any soap residue. Refill the container with 4-5 cups of water, and add a teaspoon of bleach and seal it. Shake the container thoroughly yet again, then allow the container to sit for a few minutes.
Dump the chlorine mixture and thoroughly rinse the inside a few more times to get any remaining residue out.
At this point, your container is properly cleaned and you can allow it to air dry, or refill it with fresh, clean water and store it.

This is something that Nick taught me.
Instead of buying a big bag of ice every time we wanted to go camping, and then having to constantly drain the cooler as it melted, we now use large ice blocks.
We have two old gallon-sized Gatorade containers filled with water that we leave in the freezer at home. When we want to go camping, we put those big ice blocks into the cooler and pack our food around them.
These ice blocks stay colder a lot longer than smaller ice cubes, and all the water stays contained, that way its drinkable if you run out of water for some reason.
I get comments on my YouTube channel about how I keep the cooler cold, because when I show it in videos, theres no ice. This is how I do it!
When you get home from a camping trip, all you have to do is put the ice blocks right back in the freezer and then theyre ready for your next trip.
