Henrys Lake State Park sits on a high mountain lake, popular for fishing and camping. Campers will find well-spaced sites with fire pits and hookups. Trails surround the campground, and Yellowstone National Park is about 90 minutes away.

If not, Mark Twain may have summed up the sight of a rosy tropical dawn rising over this stunning volcanic crater best when he said it was the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed. Contrary to what most visitors might think, you aren’t limited to day hiking. The Haleakal National Park backcountry also offers prime wilderness tent camping, with utterly unique views of sliding sand, jutting rock cliffs and rich vegetation. Grab a permit from the visitor center and set off on your island adventure to the hike-in sites and wilderness cabins. Visit Haleakal National Park in the late spring or early fall to avoid the highest temperatures and most of the rainy season.

Connecticut: Rocky Neck State Park
Rocky Neck State Park is a popular beachside destination with rolling hills along the Long Island Sound. Set back from the water, youll find a mix of shaded and open sites for both tents and RVs, but no hookups. Visitors can try their hand at crabbing or fishing, or sit back and watch the many birds, including cranes, herons, and mute swans, that call this area home.

Enjoy crisp lake air, plus a brilliant canvas of color so vibrant it almost looks fake. Early to mid-October is usually a wonderful time to catch these hues at their boldest. For more outdoor fun, layer up and head to the tiptop of the dunes for majestic panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Squeeze a workout in, if you dare, by bounding down the dune to the shoreline because what goes down must climb back up! Camping spots range from public and primitive, to rustic or modern, and even private so any fees vary rather widely, depending on the option you go for.

Voyageurs National Park Minnesota
Why its cool: The park offers something different every season:
- Summer and spring are perfect for water activities.
- Fall turns the park into a hiking paradise.
- Winter calls to cross-country skiers, snowshoers, snowmobilers, and ice fishermen.
The park mostly consists of water, so if you enter without your own vessel, try a guided boat tour .
There are also a wide variety of hiking trails, accessible by both car and boat. However, this is definitely more geared toward boating enthusiasts and water-lovers.
Where to camp: The park features 220 free, designated campsites, but theyre accessible only by water on a first come, first served basis. Backcountry camping is also allowed anywhere in the park .

Youll also stay near popular hikes like Old Rag, but be warned youll be sharing much of this area with black bears.
Big Meadows is in a great location in the middle of Shenandoah NP. It has numerous trails you can access from the campground. The bathrooms are basic and well maintained. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
Need a little salty sea air in your autumn? Then this is the fall camping spot for you! Enjoy dramatic cliffs, bluffs and crashing waves as well as hiking and a downright nice getaway from the city life. Be forewarned, however, that this area is an extremely popular camping destination in Cali. As such, reservations for sites often fill up six months in advance. Its also wise to note any closures or other alerts issued by the park, as the accessibility in the area can be affected by rain, wildfires, or mudslides. But even if you have to wait to visit this sweet spot be assured its definitely worth it!
Indiana: Turkey Run State Park
Sandstone ravines and old-growth forests make Turkey Run State Park a special place to go camping. Choose to relax with nature or partake in the many amenities, including tennis courts and a planetarium. The surrounding trails are great for families, and the busy summer months are filled with lots of guided activities.
Turkey Run State Park is a huge campground just north of Terre Haute. There are lots of trails that offers hikers plenty of opportunities. Sugar Creek runs through the park for fishing and canoeing. Tent Camping Near Me: Kaibab National Forest Arizona
Kaibab National Forest is divided into three regions and has a total of seven campgrounds to choose from. The North Kaibab District has primitive sites at Indian Hollow Campground that is open year-round. The other two campgrounds in this district, DeMotte Campground and Jacob Lake Campground, are only open from mid-May to mid-October. The Tusayan District has a peaceful forested campground, Ten X, that is open from mid-May to late-September, depending on weather and road conditions. The Williams District has three campgrounds open from late-April until late-September, Douglas Lake, Kaibab Lake, and White Horse Lake. The lakes serve as the citys water supply so there is no swimming.

Wilson State Park in Kansas sits on Wilson Lake with a rugged shoreline marked by cliffs and rocky outcrops. Bikers come for the 25-mile Switchgrass Bike Trail while leisurely hikers will enjoy the paved one-mile loop of The Cedar Trail.

Unlike some other states in the Northeast, Vermont poses no issue for those looking to get outdoors as much as possible. Little River State Park is Vermonts most best campground for good reason its perfectly equidistant from major towns Burlington and Montpelier, an ideal weekend getaway. Right on the Waterbury reservoir, popular activities include fishing, boating, and hiking around the Mount Mansfield State Forest easily done from any of the parks 70 tent/RV sites and 20 lean-tos.
Little River State Park is located just outside of Waterbury Vermont so its an ideal location for jumping off on other adventures! There are so many great stores and restaurants nearby if you want something else do to! The park is on the shoreline of Waterbury reservoir so there is boating and plenty of fishing. Wilderness State Park hugs 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, making it a premier destination for lakeside camping, boating, fishing, swimming, and more. The park is also very bike-friendly with 16 miles of bike paths. I tent camped here with my parents, and came back often with my own children. Far enough from Mackinaw City for peace and quiet, near enough to visit all the attractions during the day. Located on a former cattle ranch from the late 1800s, Dunton River Camp is a luxury compound in Colorado that offers an adventure that is more glamping than camping.
