Colonial Period And Revolutionary War

After the Spanish in the 16th century, the first permanent European settlers of North Carolina were English colonists who migrated south from Virginia. The latter had grown rapidly and land was less available. Nathaniel Batts was documented as one of the first of these Virginian migrants. He settled south of the Chowan River and east of the Great Dismal Swamp in 1655. By 1663, this northeastern area of the Province of Carolina, known as the Albemarle Settlements, was undergoing full-scale English settlement. During the same period, the English monarch Charles II gave the province to the Lords Proprietors, a group of noblemen who had helped restore him to the throne in 1660. The new Province of Carolina was named in honor and memory of his father, Charles I . A large revolt happened in the state in 1711, known as Cary’s Rebellion. In 1712, North Carolina became a separate colony. Except for the Earl Granville holdings, it became a royal colony seventeen years later.

The 10 Best Campgrounds In The North Carolina Mountains

One of our favorite ways to take a deep dive into the beauty of nature is to enjoy the myriad campgrounds in the North Carolina mountains.

Sure, hiking trails are great for getting outside to appreciate the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge region. But camping overnight allows us to explore a given area in much greater depth than day trips.

For my wife and me, camping is typically a primitive thing. We use an old-school tent set up, completely unplugged from the distractions of civilization.

Were suckers for camping food, licking our chops over chili dinners and oatmeal breakfasts cooked over an open fire or camp stove.

We love to sit beside a campfire as dusk slides into darkness. We even enjoy watching other campers going about their idiosyncratic merriments.

Camping in the North Carolina mountains has become one of our favorite pastimes, especially since we live in the area .

There is so much beauty to see waterfalls, scenic summit views, hiking trails, mountain lakes, wildlife and wildflowers that it just never gets stale.

In our opinion, this list includes some of the best campgrounds in North Carolina, assembled to help you find the perfect place for some quality NC mountains camping!

The French Broad Paddle Trail is a network of campgrounds along the French Broad River that can be pieced together to create epic paddle-in camping trips. The Paddle Trail campsites connect over 140 miles of river for canoeing and kayaking in NC. Beginning in Rosman, NC, paddlers can tackle flat and whitewater paddling all the way to Douglas, Tennessee. Primitive campsites are located strategically so that paddlers can reach their next camping destination in a single day. The longest paddling distance is 15 miles, from Rhodes Ranch campground to Buck Shoals campground.
