PIKE COUNTY, Pa. Promised Land State Park in Pike County has had a steady stream of campers all summer.
Park Manager Tarah Brugger says the park was prepared to have another busy summer this year, and so far, it has been.
“Last year was definitely, I think, the peak, I think, any state park saw with camping, but this year has been a little less, but still definitely more than most years. We’ve had an uptick in camping which is good to see people are still coming out and enjoying their parks.”
Park officials and campers have been following the weather forecast for this week. It doesn’t look promising to stay dry, which means plans for the last hurrah of summer can change.
Brian Rabinowitz and his family decided they didn’t want to end their camping trip on a soggy note and were packing up to head home to New York.
“We got a head-up there was going to be some rain, but then as we got closer and saw rain and rain and thunderstorms, and then more rain, and wondering how we’re going to break down camp in the rain. Instead, we’ll break down a day ahead.”
Some campsites are already empty from people who have packed up and left, but some campers have decided to stick it out.
“Rain gear all day long, tarps all day long. Brother with a camper like this helps a lot, ” Vince Martorana said.
Promised Land State Park officials say if the threat of rain doesn’t bother you, some campsites are available for this weekend.

Promised Land State Park Is Overflowing With Abundant Wildlife And A Rich History
Open year-round, Promised Land State Park offers six unique camping areas featuring a sand beach, swimming area, playground, volleyball court, and picnic areas. Park events include arts and crafts, wildlife talks, kids camps, and fishing and kayaking lessons.
Visit the park to see its greatest treasure: a pair of bald eagles. The eagles nest in the park each year, and visitors can view them from the observation station. Birdwatchers will also spot several species in the forests. The National Audubon Society recognizes the park as a vital habitat for birds.
The Masker Museum showcases the parks history. It features a display on the Civilian Conservation Corp . During the Great Depression, CCC workers built roads, buildings, and a dam on the park lands. Additionally, geocaching tours lead visitors through the park and describe the CCCs impact.

Promised Land State Park
Promised Land State Park is located on the Pocono Plateau, 1,800 feet above sea level. Its surrounded by 12,464 acres of the Delaware State Forest. The forests consist primarily of beech, oak, maple and hemlock trees. Two lakes and several small streams add to the parks outstanding beauty.
There are approximately 50 miles of trails throughout Promised Land State Park and the surrounding natural areas. A five-mile hike along the Bruce Lake Road Trail leads to a natural glacial lake. Hiking in Promised Land State Park is particularly scenic during May and June when the rhododendron and mountain laurel are in bloom.
The park offers campgrounds and cabins. I recommend Pickerel Point Campground located on a peninsula on the southern side of Promised Land Lake. It offers 75 campsites, most of them on the waterfront, and three camping cottages. Limited sites and the camping cottages are open year-round. An unguarded swimming area is available at the end of the peninsula.

My Very Favorite Pa State Park For Camping
I hate to write this because I donât want to open the floodgates of campers to my favorite spot. But I must. My husband and I are tent campers . Iâm not a big fan of bears, and many PA state parks are loaded with them. Not so here at Pine Grove, and the sites are large and lovely. yes there are many electric sites, so you do get lots of happy RV campers. , but there are quite a few pet free and no electric sites. It is on the Appalachian Trail, and there is a nice camp store, lots of nice hiking and two lakes with sandy beaches, swimming and canoe and kayak rentals.. Flush toilets and hot water showers . Yes, you do have to keep pushing the timed water button, but oh well⦠It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Valley Forge interchange of the PA Turnpike near Phila, which is not too far. Just right!

We met friends from the area and friends traveling through from south to north for a corgi meet-up There were 13 corgis and one dachshund â and a bunch of people as well. We met at the picnic area near the actual furnace and, on this Tuesday after Labor Day, we had the place to ourselves with the exception of one small group. We had lots of space to run around and play There is an Appalachian Trail museum here as well as cabins and camping areas, a general store and several lakes. It is truly a gorgeous area. Promised Land State Park Campgrounds
Promised Land State Park sits 100 miles from NYC and 125 miles from Philly. It is spectacularly gorgeous, and its 3,000 acres are great for picnicking, bird and wildlife watching, trail biking, and hiking over miles over trails. Youll boat, swim, and fish in 2 lakes. Youll be surrounded by more than 12,000 acres of Delaware State Forest.

Promised Land is a state park, so it belongs to you and me, baby. You can roll up in your RV, pitch a tent, or rent a cabin. One caveat: book early! You can make a reservation for any of the cabin or camping areas here. Be sure to call many months in advance this place books quickly and consistently.

Visitors to Promised Land State Park who wish to stay overnight have a choice of staying in one of four campgrounds with tent sites, or in rustic cabins that were built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Campgrounds vary from rustic to full hookup . All campgrounds are near swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. Lower Lake Campground is on Lower Lake. It opens for the season in mid-April and closes in mid-December. The campground has flush toilets and showers with hot water.

An active bald eagle nest sits in a large tree at the edge of Lower Lake. This nest is visible from the wildlife observation station, which is accessible from Bear Wallow Road, the same road leading to Bear Wallow Boat Launch.
The nest is active by early spring when the lakes surface is no longer frozen. The eagle nest is located directly across the lake from the established wildlife observation station.

Making A Reservation At Promised Land State Park
Make your reservation for camping in Promised Land State Park well in advance! Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon on the day of arrival. Advance reservations are available for almost all campsites.
Unreserved sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Act fast if you want to catch camping cottages or waterfront sites at Pickerell Point!
Attend An Environmental Education Program
Environmental Education programming is offered from April through October at both Promised Land State Park and Varden Conservation Area. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, recreational programming is offered on Fridays and Saturdays.
From late June through early September, the park provides a weekly nature arts and crafts program for children of all ages that is organized by conservation volunteers.

Pine Cradle Lake Family Campground is located in the heart of the Endless Mountains of north-east Pennsylvania. The facility sprawls across 73 acres and even has a picturesque 18-acre lake on-site. It might be referred to as a hidden gem, yet the campground is still easily accessible from cities such as Binghamton, Elmira, Scranton and Willamsport.

Over 20,000 years ago, this part of the Pocono Plateau was covered by a sheet of ice nearly a mile thick. It left behind a landscape dominated by rugged highlands, pristine glacial lakes and dense evergreen forests. Early settlers realized that farming was nearly impossible with the rocky soil, so lumber became the areas main industry. The forests were clear-cut and ravaged by wildfires until the land was virtually treeless.
Yet, Promised Land wasnt beyond saving. The state started purchasing the land in 1902, and Promised Land soon became Pennsylvanias fourth state park. Reforestation was a top priority. In fact, between 1902 and 1933, the state planted more than 370,000 trees.
The park continued to grow and thrive thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps . During the Great Depression, this program provided young, single men with jobs in Americas public lands. From 1933-1941, CCC workers set up camp at Promised Land and helped plant trees, fight forest fires, build roads and trails, create campgrounds and more. Many of their original buildings still survive today, such as the rustic Bear Wallow Cabin Colony.

Erie Bluffs State Park
Erie Bluffs consists of 587 acres of Lake Erie shoreline in western Erie County, 12 miles west of the city of Erie.
This Pennsylvania State Park showcases the largest undeveloped stretch of Lake Erie shoreline remaining in Pennsylvania. The park is home to many species of wildlife, including 80 species of birds, bats, deer, foxes and more. Since it is designated as a day-use park, there is no overnight camping allowed in the park.

Making State Park Camping Reservations
Now that youve researched and selected the perfect parks to visit, its time to make your reservations!
Each state has their own reservation system, and some are a bit wonkier than others.
Before selecting a site, think of what you want to be close to maybe thats water, the bathhouse, or a playground. If youre like us, we like to be near a bathhouse and far from the playgrounds .
A few things we suggest not being next to under any circumstance are water processing and electric generation stations. The ones weve seen make a humming machine noise and dont smell fantastic, either.
But everyone knows that the campground map cant tell the whole story!
The reservation websites typically offer at least one photo of the camping site, so examine it closely is it surrounded by trees? Can you see other facilities and sites? Is it shaded or in open sun? Consider your preferences before making a choice.

With six camping areas, Promised Land State Park delivers as an excellent destination for nature seekers. Campgrounds vary from rustic to full hookup . All campgrounds are located near swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking.

With many waterfront sites, Pickerel Point Campground offers one of the best camping experiences among Pennsylvania state parks. The area has 75 campsites and three camping cottages. Limited sites and the camping cottages are open year-round.
The area has two shower houses with laundry facilities and one restroom. An unguarded swimming area is located at the end of the peninsula. Mooring and boat rental facilities are also available.
The campground offers rustic walk-in sites, electric sites, and full hookups with sewer, water, and electricity. Keep in mind that the most desirable sites in this area are walk-in, so you will need to carry all your things. But the distance is short, and your effort will pay off with the privacy and the scenic beauty of the waterfront.
RV and drive-in sites are available, but most of them do not offer much seclusion. If you want to be close to the water, look at the spots toward the end of the peninsula. I like sites 126 to 131 and 140 to 147.
