The most comfortable way to sleep in a tent is to invest in one of the best camping beds. It might seem like a bit of a luxury when planning an outdoor adventure, but come nightfall it’ll suddenly be the most important thing you have ever owned, able to turn the remotest and coldest camp into a cosy sleeping spot. And you can pull it out of your tent in the day to act as a makeshift sun lounger when the weather’s decent, too.

There are plenty of camping beds to choose from, from cheap inflatables to luxurious setups that’ll cost you a fair bit more. These are all aimed at car campers , but you should still be aware of the packed size you’ll still need room in your boot for your tent and rest of your luggage! If you’re looking for a breakdown of the different bed options while kipping under canvas, our airbeds vs camp beds vs sleep mats explainer should help.

What Is An Air Mattress

Air mattresses are exactly how it sounds: an inflatable pad or mattress that provides a firm, supportive surface to sleep upon. Depending on their design, they can be folded or rolled for storage, and come in a variety of sizes and heights to fit your needs. They are regularly used for tent camping, RV and campers, and backpacking.

Is Sleeping On An Air Mattress Bad For You

Air mattresses aren’t known to be permanent sleeping solutions, as they can’t offer you the same level of support as your regular mattress does. While they’re perfect for camping trips and for having guests sleep over, long term use of an air mattress may lead to shoulder, neck or back issues. If these are problem areas for you, it’s best to only sleep on an air mattress for short periods of time.

Mountain Hardwear Lamina Sleeping Bag

A hefty fill of Thermal Q synthetic insulation and welded construction, rather than stitched guarantees a warm and comfortable night’s sleep in Mountain Hardwear’s Lamina sleeping bag. Rated to a comfort level of 3 degrees celcius, the Lamina is a great three season option, and it’s also lightweight enough to take with you backpacking, at under a kilo. Packing down small also means that it’s easy to transport and takes up very little space in your bag or car.

Inside, the mummy shape helps you retain plenty of warmth but if you prefer more space to maneuver, look for a box shaped sleeping bag.

Coleman Comfort Bed Double: The Best Camping Bed For Couples

QUECHUA INFLATABLE CAMPING BED BASE

Price: £35 |

A great value air bed from Coleman, designed to make life more comfortable for couples. The separated double-chamber design means you won’t automatically get wobbled awake if your partner rolls over or gets up. Whats more, it also means that if one of you likes a firm mattress and the other prefers something a little softer, you can adjust each chamber accordingly.

To help with general comfort, the air bed also has a sturdy coil construction that minimises the amount of dip and roll as you move in the night, mimicking the springs found in your mattress at home.

At 188cm long the Coleman Comfort Bed will accommodate most heights, and with a load rating of 295kg youll be fine should the kids decide to join in the middle of the night, too.

Its made from a super-tough PVC and it has dual-sealed valves that make inflation and deflation fast and simple. Its relatively light for carrying from the car, but we recommend inflating using your cars power outlet and a pump rather than relying on your lung or foot power.

Campingaz Camping Kitchen 2 Cv

A camping stove that comes in at a smidge under £55 from most online retailers, the Campingaz Camping Kitchen 2 CV offers simplicity and value. Two rather fierce burners output enough heat to boil water in around 6min 30sec and the enamelled steel pan supports are dishwasher safe. They also offer a modicum of wind protection, and crucially you can fit a large saucepan and frying pan on the burners side-by-side. There is no piezo ignitor or grill to speak of, but these arent deal breakers for us, and the simplicity leads to a light weight and compact size.

The Camping Kitchen 2 CV is equipped with a CV 470+ regulator which allows you to use a much smaller bottle than the more usual R907, why carry a massive gas bottle when at most you would use two much smaller CV 470s in a week of camping?

We love well executed simple design here at Active Traveller and the Camping Kitchen 2 CV has it in spades.

Hand/foot Pump Or Electric Pump

Hand Vs Electric

Using an electric pump for your air mattress will be fine if your camping spot is close to where you park the car. If however, you have to walk a long distance to reach the camping spot, the bulkier electric pump will make things difficult for you so it is best to choose a mattress that comes with a hand/foot pump.

Portable Pump

Remember that you can always buy an electric pump later on they come with either DC or AC plugins. A DC electric pump will draw power from your cars 12V outlet whereas an AC electric pump will require a generator or a wall outlet.

Battery Powered

Some products on the market will come with an air mattress pump built in, and is run off of a pair of 4D batteries. This is ideal for times when you want the luxury of an easily inflatable mattress and have no access to outlet power or your vehicle outlet

Self-Inflating

Very lightweight and easy to handle. This is ideal for long distance treks and hikes. Not your most comfortable air mattress but better than the cold hard ground.

Size

If you have a small tent that doesnt have room for a queen size air bed then obviously trying to fit a queen size air mattress in your tent is going to bulge out the sides and leave no room for you to walk around your tent or store other supplies. Always think about the size of the air bed in relation to where youll be placing it.

How Do You Inflate And Deflate An Air Mattress With A Pump

Quesha Inflatable Camp Bed Base

Many electric pumps have an option for both inflation and deflation, where deflation essentially does the reverse of pumping air into your mattress . To inflate with an electric pump, simply insert the valve, plug in the pump and wait until your air bed reaches the right level of firmness for your needs. If yours doesn’t have the automatic deflation feature, it’s usually very simple to do without a pump. You can either let the mattress air out naturally by simply opening the valve, or press down and spread out the mattress to remove all air manually.

    Campingaz Chef Stove And Grill

One of the first things to think about on any camping trip is how youre going to cook your grub. For car camping we recommend a twin burner stove, preferably with a grill included. This gives you enough space to boil, fry and grill at the same time, for a proper square meal.

Campingaz Chef stove is just about as straightforward and no frills as you can get but it does the job and does it well. It has two fearsome burners plus a small grill for single slices of toast or the odd chicken breast. All this is wrapped in a carry case for easy transportation.

    Primus Onja Camping Stove

Designed for modern life, carried under the arm of an urban hipster to the local park as much as used on a proper camping trip, the Onja oozes cool, and its not often you can say that about something so utilitarian.

But good design is good design, and aesthetically at least the Onja has tonnes of it. The mechanism for deploying the stove could not be simpler, folding open in a scissor like action to expand the cooking area and feet. Each burner then connects directly with the canister, and you can use a range of fitment types.

As a final nod to neat design the protective top becomes a wooden chopping board when you hit the beach. Performance of the burners is as good as most stoves, i.e it heats and subsequently cooks food. The base isnt as stable as a stove that sits flat but, in most circumstances, you can get around this.

Make no mistake, this is somewhat of a fashion accessory, but if youre willing to pay a premium for modern design aesthetics in your camping kit then go get the Onja now.

Choosing A Camping Air Mattress Buying Tips

    Heavy

Camping air mattresses come either as heavy or light, and this is because of the materials used in their construction. If comfort is your chief priority, a heavier bed is recommended because it will be made of a thicker, more comfortable material that will also last you longer. These mattresses work well for people who camp close to their homes, or those who have kids.

    Light

But if youre the type of camper for whom the main goal is hiking, trekking or rock climbing rather than sleeping in a tent, you should stick with a lighter weight air bed, which enhances portability and convenience at the cost of durability. This does not mean that the mattress will be very flimsy or damage prone, just that you cant have kids jumping on it.

How To Choose The Best Camping Bed Or Sleeping Mat

    QUECHUA INFLATABLE CAMPING BED BASE

With so many options its important to narrow down your search based on the type of camping youre doing, how long you would typically go away for and how far youre likely to have to carry your camping equipment.

If youre travelling light hiking, bikepacking, or maybe even just going to a festival on the train a camping mat will be a good choice. These range from extra thick to ultralight and in both single and double widths. They fold up small and are generally easy to carry.

For a longer stay, where maybe you can park next to your tent, a larger metal framed camp bed or high-quality inflatable mattress will be ideal as they keep you warmer by lifting you off the ground, while also protecting your hips on bumpy pitches. These metal and material camp beds can fold down quite small but traditionally take a little more room in the car than a camping mat.

    What features do I need?

Camping beds Traditional camp beds are made using fabric stretched over a metal frame to create a cot style bed. With the exception of a few ultralight models, these designs have changed very little, and offer a warm, suspended nights rest.

Check the length as some can come up short if youre over 180cm, and also be mindful of the overall pack size and weight.

    Campingaz Smart Quickbed Double

Cant quite stretch to an expensive self-inflating mat? An inflatable airbed is your next best option and this one from Campingaz pairs easy inflation with luxurious comfort.

The one-way valve makes inflation super easy but this is still best done with an electric or hand pump as the bed is quite lofty.

The internal coil structure means that there is less of the bouncy castle feel than most cheaper airbeds, and comfort is decent throughout the night. The built-in pillows have to be inflated separately and feature a secret compartment under for stowing valuables. Although handy to have, we would personally rather just add our own pillows for a touch of home-from-home comfort.

With no insulation inside, the Quickbed Double is noticeably cooler at night than a self-inflating mat but used in high summer it makes a simple and highly affordable camp bed option.

    • Item weight: 13.86 pounds
    • Weight capacity: 300 pounds

The Coleman SupportRest mattress features a reinforced construction to help you enjoy a more stable sleeping surface for the outdoors, and its 20-inch thickness makes it easy to get in and out of bed. The air pump is located at the foot of the mattress. It doesnt include a storage area for the cord, but this allows for a longer cord, which could prove convenient when you have limited outlets available.

It only takes about three minutes to inflate this product. All you have to do is plug in the power cord and turn the knob to the inflation setting . The internal motor does the rest. The motor is kind of loud, but it doesnt last very long. If you carry a lot of weight and have struggled in the past with air beds that deflate quickly during the night, the Coleman SupportRest air mattress could offer the solution youve been looking for.
