A Few Other Tips For Visting Washington Dc

Campground Review Fort Belvoir near Washington DC

I suggest making a list of what you want to see with your family ahead of time. This was my boys 2nd visit to Washington DC and they didnt want to cram as much during this visit.

During our last visit, we went to all of the monuments and museums.

I was in DC a few months prior to our visit. During that trip, I got to explore on my own for hours. My husband got up early to see more and stayed later after we left to return to the campground.

He said the extra time at the monuments by himself was one of his favorite experiences of the trip.

If its your first visit, I suggest arriving downtown early to avoid the crowds at the monuments. I think that its also worth going back at night for another perspective.

The National Museums on the National Mall open around 10am and tend to close around 5:30.

I would suggest visiting a monument, in the early morning. Next, I would go to the free National Museums, and then visit more of the monuments afterward.

The hop on hop off bus is another option if you dont want to do a lot of walking. This is also a great way to help you see as much as possible.

Washington DC is a city with endless options. Wear your walking shoes because you will put the miles on and bring a backpack with water and snacks.

Thanks again to GoRving and the International Spy Museum for hosting our visit.

You can read more about our RV Trip with tips for each city below.

About Those Free Museums And Beyond

When we hit DC, we usually pick just two or three of the free museums to see. Call us unambitious but, its easy to get overwhelmed. Plus, there is so much outside of the national mall area and outside of the buildings, you need to leave yourself time to stumble across some of these gems.

Eating near the National Mall: All those free museums are rad, but dont expect to find many places to grab a good bite near by. The museum cafes are expensive and the plentiful hot dog carts arent that great. Plan to hit the museums after lunch or bring your own and eat in one of the many gardens near by.

Did you know that Pulaski Park is a giant street map of the capital city downtown region? From above, you can see its a replica of the streets in downtown DC. Complete with a grass patch marking the national mall and a marker for the capital and the White House. Go ahead, check it out in Google maps.

On this visit we spent a fair amount of time in the Hirshhorn Museum, the Suprasensorial exhibit with neon lights drew us in. Interactive art is always a plus in our book, intentional or not. You can see, Dennis enjoyed channeling Francis Bacons work.

If you need a little help, you can check out this cool DC Art App, ArtAround.ArtAround is an interactive, inside-out museum for public art in DC. Get the scoop on everything from murals, monuments, and street art to galleries, museums, and events

So, we hope you enjoy our nations capital as much as we have. Enjoy your travels!

Urban Camping: Washington Dc Found Art & Rv Parking

All politics aside, DC has our vote for one of the most friendly urban camping cities in the northeast region.

What traveler can contest the free museums, more of them that one could see in a single visit? Or the presidential monuments and array of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Romanesque, medieval, and modern architecture that span the city blocks?

Every nook of the city is bursting with visual stimuli. From Stikman underfoot to the cylindrical Hirshhorn museum. Massive street murals in the local neighborhoods, and avenues of brick row houses and Edwardian style homes around the vibrant traffic circles. Even Union Station is decorated with Roman columns and statues fit forerr, parking.

So, if youve put off seeing DC because youre not sure that its a spot youd like to wrangle your home on wheels around, then read on. Weve put together some helpful tips for our fellow RVing friends and those found art lovers in search of the U.S. capital city, Washington, DC.

Transportation Options To Washington Dc From The Campground

Make your visit easier and less stressful by using public transportation, Uber, or Lyft into Washington DC.

Seriously, you do not want to deal with traffic or finding parking in downtown DC with an RV.

The bus stops at Cherry Hill Campground. Next, you can take it to the Metro station to catch the subway into the city. You can also sign up for a guided tour with Gray Line.

My husband wanted to visit the monuments earlier than the rest of the family. He used public transportation to get to the Metro Station.

The kids, my dad, and I opted to use Uber and Lyft to go to and from downtown. It cost around $25 each way.

The price for 4 people was about the same amount that we would have paid for public transportation. It was easier to not have to worry about schedules and transfers.

If you have someone new to those apps you can save more money on your first ride.

What You Need To Know Before Going On The Tour Of The White House

Camping inside the Washington DC Beltway

Before your scheduled time slot you will need to line up at 15th and Hamilton Streets NW.

I would suggest bringing snacks and a drink that you can throw away afterward. We waited in line beyond our scheduled time to go in.

Everyone visiting 18 and up is required to present a valid government-issued photo ID.

  • Drivers license
  • United States or other official government-issued passports

Make sure that your information submitted exactly matches the government-issued photo ID you present when arriving at the White House.

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • City

You cannot bring any type of bag, purse, or stroller into the White House. That can be a challenge if you have small children.

We were able to keep our backpack and pick it up afterward at the office of our Congress Rep. It is a good distance between the two buildings. You might consider an Uber or a bike share if you dont want to walk for 25+ minutes.

You can take pictures with your camera as long as it doesnt have detachable lenses.

I just used the camera on my I-phone but you are not allowed to take video. Get a full list of prohibited items here.

Make sure that you take your time during your tour and take in every detail. Once you exit the White House, you cannot return.

I really enjoyed the photographs of previous Presidents with their pets and the display of Presidential china.

The Closest Rv Campground To Washington Dc

An important part of trip planning is deciding where to stay. We chose to stay at Cherry Hill RV Park for 2 nights. Its the closest campground to Washington DC.

It was also a convenient location after our visit to Annapolis. We loved that Cherry Hill campground was close to our activities in DC the following day.

I loved that the campsite had a nice bricked patio area. It also had a picnic table along with sturdy chairs and a circular table. We found plenty of activities and amenities available for family fun onsite.

We took advantage of the outdoor pool pretty quickly because it was a hot day. The water temperature wasnt bad because I even got in at night.

The Best Campgrounds and RV Parks near Washington DC

The allure of having your own personal home away from home to return to after a long day of sightseeing in Washington, D.C., is hard to resist. Keep in mind that, if you have a very big rig and dont pull a towed vehicle, it will be hard to drive around in Washington, and even harder to find a parking spot. Choose a campground with good access to public transportation into the city. Make reservations well in advance if you plan to visit during a major celebration like the Cherry Blossom Festival or Independence Day.
