I had under good authority that the place I wanted to try for dinner was Woodys a local bar burger joint that the locals rave about and then out of town era make a drive too. Being a burger lover myself I headed out of the park and found Woodys about 2 miles up the road off US 180.

I settled on the double bacon cheeseburger and after what seemed like seconds I was diving into one the juiciest burgers Id ever had.

Full of flavor and perfect distribution of condiments on the burger it was certainly one of the highlights of the trip. I recommend stopping by here if burgers are your thing. Trust me you wont be disappointed!

Lake Mineral Wells State Park Overview:

Lake Mineral Wells, built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp, is a Texas Outside favorite because of the variety of things that it offers to the campers. It has very spacious and pretty sites set among the mesquite trees and the staff works very hard to keep the park clean, in good repair, and to provide the visitor with a good experience. The Lake Mineral Wells State Park is centered around a 646-acre lake and there are a few sites that are right on the water .

Kids will love this park – it has fun bike trails through the woods and in and around the campsites cliffs, rocks, crevices, and boulders that are excellent for climbing and scrambling around and the park offers a number of kid services . The kids will enjoy swimming or fishing in the lake for bass, crappie, and catfish. A small concession in a cool building build by the Civilian Conservation Corp rents canoes, paddleboats, and small trolling engines. Lake Mineral Wells offers other programs including: Kid’s Wilderness Survival, Guided Trail Walks, Wildflower Walks and other nature programs – check their website for schedules. This is one park that really goes out of their way to please the entire family.

Horse enthusiasts will find some nice sites and excellent trails for conditioning or for green horses or riders.

According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife, Where Native Americans, legendary cattlemen, and health seekers all found sustenance. For me, it was a recommendation by Chet Garner, otherwise known as The Daytripper. I was in the Fort Worth area for work and was looking for a place to hike. Little did I know that my experience here would be one of my funnest hikes visually.

The state park is well known for rock climbers, but theres Lake Mineral Wells for water activities, and it has a pretty great trail system too.

I was there on my way out of town, so I didnt get to inspect the campsites, but I did pop into the park store which had plenty of snacks, random souvenirs, and plenty of fishing gear including bait. This was actually the first time I realized that not all park gift shops were at the same place as the headquarters. Now I know

• Because of the terrain- super sturdy shoes. Something with a thick sole. One of the few times Id say boots would work well here if you have sensitive ankles.

Mineral Wells State Park Taking Reservations

Visitors can now make camping reservations at Lake Mineral Wells State Park and other state parks, for arrival days between June 1 and Sept. 7.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in April had directed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Historical Commission to close all state parks and historic sites as part of the state’s efforts to protect against the spread of COVID-19.

On April 20, most state parks were allowed to reopen with restrictions, as part of Abbott’s first phase of reopening the economy.

No one is more pleased than us to welcome more outdoor enthusiasts back into state parks as part of the continued reopening of Texas, Carter Smith, executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said. Our careful and deliberate approach to phasing in the reopening has served our visitors, volunteers, and staff well as we have continued our emphasis on the safety of everyone in the parks. Even in this limited capacity, we are glad that we can get more Texans and their families safely back on the trails and in the campsites to enjoy all the many unique spaces and places that make Texas state parks so special.

Current day use visitation hours at Lake Mineral Wells State Park is 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and requires online registration.

Mineral Wells Parks and Recreation Department announced that other facilities would be opening this weekend, including youth softball and baseball fields at West City Park.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is located along Rock Creek, a large tributary of the Brazos River. This area was an early home to several Native American tribes including the Comanche. In 1922, Lake Mineral Wells was completed as a water supply for the city of Mineral Wells. By 1975, the lake was turned over to Texas Parks and Wildlife for recreational use and opened as a state park in 1981. Activities include camping, water recreation, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and horseback riding . The 20-mile Trailway provides opportunities for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians. Located on a railroad bed, the grades are very flat and curves are very gentle, making it popular for trail users of all ages and abilities. Note: The Trailway may be closed during wet weather – please check with the park.

Amenities And Fun Things To Do:

There are 77 campsites with water and electricity in 4 different camping areas. One of the areas with 20 sites with water and a horse tether is for equestrian camping only. You can hike 2.5 miles to a primitive camping area with 20 sites or stay in one of the 15-screened shelters . A small concession offers some microwave food, limited groceries and ice, and canoes, paddle boats, and trolling engines for rent. The sandy beach is excellent for sunbathing or swimming. The concession area also has a 2-lane boat ramp and a nice lighted fishing pier – there are 4 more piers around the lake. The fishing for catfish, crappie, perch, and black bass is fair.

There is a group dinning area with a kitchen for day use.

A Brief Introduction To Lake Mineral Wells State Park And Trailway

Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway is a state park located in Mineral Wells, Parker County, Texas. It includes Lake Mineral Wells, and is the only state park in Texas which protects part of the Western Cross Timbers and Mineral Wells Trailway. Also within the park is Penitentiary Hollow, a somewhat unusual geological feature which resembles a small canyon. It is a popular site for rock climbing, though the only type of climbing allowed is top-rope. The park also features over 31 miles of hiking trails, 25 miles of which are open to bicycles and horses. Campsites can be found by the small lake, and up on the higher areas of the park, as well.

Mineral Wells State Park is about 1 hour west of Fort Worth. The are offers some really interesting climbing on a sandstone conglomerate type of rock. The area is suited to beginners to intermediate but is definitely a great place to learn climbing outdoors. I arrived at the Lake Mineral Wells State Park in the afternoon after booking my campsite on the Texas State Park app available for both Android and IOS. It was a simple and straightforward process that even a tech illiterate person such as myself made it through quickly.

I booked the shelter which is set up for 4 people for just $36. I brought my blow up deluxe mattress along for the night, and a sleeping bag as the temps were going to be in the lower 40s as Texas headed into the fall.

I selected a site based off of previous campers reviews on google, something I always like to look at before settling on a site. Lucky for me site number 5 was available so I scooped it up. Upon my arrival to Lake Mineral Wells State Park I was issued a key to the shelter cabin. I thought that was a nice touch as safety in always in my mind when planning my trips.

Nestled among the trees was my shelter cabin with a fire pit outside with a cooking grate as well. Inside was electrical outlets and slatted screened windows in the front of the cabin and to the side was solid wood.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is off U.S. Highway 180 four miles east of Mineral Wells in Palo Pinto County. The 2,905-acre park, which includes the 646-acre Lake Mineral Wells, was originally part of Camp Wolters, established in 1926 as a training ground for the Texas National Guard. During World War II the base served as an infantry training center. The army closed the camp in 1946, and in 1951 the air force took it over and changed the name to Wolters Air Force Base. The army resumed control of the site in 1956, renamed it Fort Wolters, and used it as a helicopter training center until 1974, when it was closed permanently. Some of the land was given to other agencies, but nearly 3,000 acres, including the lake, which was constructed by the city of Mineral Wells for water supply, was deeded to the state parks department. The park features steep hills, deep ravines, and some open savannah. Post oaks and blackjack oaks are scattered throughout the flat areas, while the ravines are heavily wooded with cedar, elm, pecan, cottonwood, and red oak trees. Facilities include fishing piers, a boat ramp, camping and picnicking areas, hiking and equestrian trails, and eight screened shelters.

Pat PTerrible I can’t say enough bad things about this campground. They give no kind of discount whatsoever to seniors or military. There is no signal available for Internet or cellphone. The rates are ridiculous for water/electric only, plus EACH person has to pay $7 for the pleasure of entering! The site we were given was down a slope and not even wide enough to put our steps out. We risked breaking a leg just exiting and entering our rig as there was a drop off and a huge boulder. We were not permitted to pick a site even though they had a list of the reserved sites. To get to this state Park you have a very sharp turn, not marked, and the you have to drive through a spillway, which is often covered in water and slippery. There is no antenna TV reception and the bugs are too bad to sit out. We will definitely not be returning and I will never recommend this campground to anyone. Lake Mineral Wells State Park Overview

Lake Mineral Wells State Park campground has 101 campsites located next to the lake in the heart of cattle country. The area was also a popular health resort. There are 72 single-family sites with water & electric hookups and 18 equestrian sites and 11 tent/trailers sites. Hike-in primitive and group sites are also available. Each campsite has a table, lantern post, fire ring and grill.

Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers and a dump station. Theres also a boat ramp, camp store, picnic areas and amphitheater/group hall.

The park has a variety of outdoor recreation activities including horseback riding, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, rock climbing, biking, hiking and wildlife viewing. Boats, kayaks and canoes are also available for rent.

A Typical Texas Outsider Day:

Start the day by trying the Cross Timber Back Country Trail with your bike, horse, or just walk it – Texas Outside gave it 2.5 stars because it is relatively boring except for the last loop which is prettier and offers more variety. A better but shorter hike/bike trail runs along the lake by the campgrounds.

After lunch head over to Penitentiary Hollow and climb the cliffs and boulders – plan on spending a minimum of a couple hours here hiking, climbing, and watching the climbers and rapplers. If you’re lucky, some of the professionals will let you climb or rappel. The entire family should enjoy Penitentiary Hollow.

Hike the Lake Front Trail if you have time.

On the way back to the campsite, stop at the nice sandy beach, catch some rays, and cool off in the lake.

Take in the show at the amphitheater in the evening.
