  • Hiking Riding Kayaking And Dispersed Camping

This hiking and off-road trail map can help point you in the right direction. For dirt bike riding, head over to Hayfield Draw OHV Day Use Area or contact Arizona Offroad Tours for ATV rentals. Kayakers, canoers, and stand up paddle boarders can float the Verde using Verde River Access Points. Fishing information is available from Prescott and Coconino National Forests.

If youd rather go dispersed camping within the National Forests, here are some helpful guidelines from Prescott and Coconino or stop by the Verde Ranger Station and pick up a Forest Service map with all the details. Ranger station staff can answer any questions you may have. The Red Rock Ranger District is another great resource for maps and nearby camping areas. Backpackers and backcountry explorers who want to traverse our limitless and rugged wilderness areas should prepare for potentially long, difficult, and complicated hikes with canyoneering, but if you can hack it, youll be rewarded with seclusion and breathtaking beauty. Happy trails, campers!

The wife and I stayed in one of the tiny house cabins in April. It was less expensive than staying in a hotel in Sedona. The cabin was clean and cozy. We were surprised that it seems at 9 oclock at night it was completely quiet in the park. Nice place to stay and we might be back again this coming April. We fell in less be with the area! Nearby Attractions And Activities:

Horseshoe Reservoir is one of the most remote lakes in the area ideal for anglers looking for a quiet lake. Horseshoe is one of the best fish nurseries in Arizona, with the refilling of the reservoir. Below the Horseshoe Dam, the Verde River flows all the way to Bartlett Lake. This is a great area for river fishing and kayaking.

Cave Creek Ranger District is the first district on Tonto National Forest. It is located in the farthest left hand corner of the forest, and is notable for the water, hiking, and horseback riding recreation. It consists of over 570,000 acres of Desert, Semi-Desert Grassland, Chaparral, and Pinyon-Juniper types of vegetation. The Verde River flows through this entire district Horseshoe and Bartlett Reservoirs are located here.

Watershed protection was one of the most important reasons that the Tonto National Forest was established. Since then, the Salt and Verde rivers have had six dams constructed. While the dammed water is of great value for irrigating fields and for domestic use, it is also very popular with thousands of people who recreate in its waters every year.

Things To Do While Youre Here

We rarely camp at the same location twice. After we discovered that the West Clear Creek Wilderness was down this road we stayed another 4 days here so we could check it out. The best thing to do while camping near Camp Verde in our opinion is to hike the West Clear Creek Trail and beyond! Youll experience huge tall green cottonwoods all along the river as well as swimming holes surrounded by gorgeous red rocks. And there are areas with cliffs and walls near the water so you can climb and jump. For more details about exploring West Clear Creek Wilderness, check out this article.

If youre looking for another amazing hike to do while youre camping near Camp Verde, we would definitely recommend Black Canyon Trail. It is one of those hikes that is beautiful the entire time and keeps getting better and better! Check out this article to get the details.

Also nearby in Montezuma Castle National Monument. This is a neat old dwelling built into the canyon walls years ago. If you already have a National Park Pass its definitely worth a stop.

While we were camping near Camp Verde we explored the washes near our camp spot. We never know what were going to find when we set off and wander. One particular evening stroll turned into a 6 mile adventure through the washes. And we found some tall badland-like formations, narrow canyon areas, and a few medium sized dry falls. The washes were also full of color and fragrance from the flowering bushes everywhere.

Our Experience Camping Near Camp Verde

A couple months had passed since our first encounter with camping near Camp Verde. During those months we camped in several places in the surrounding area Cottonwood, Mayer, and Cherry. While we were camping near Cherry we were looking for a good adventure and stumbled upon a hike in West Clear Creek Wilderness. And we realized that the trailhead was further down the road from where we had previously camped near Camp Verde.

We were so surprised by the beauty that was just a couple miles further down that dirt road!! Our hike led us to a beautiful river in a cottonwood lined canyon with swimming holes, cliff jumping and our first encounter with a Gila Monster! After that we knew we had to come back to explore further.

So we headed back to give this camping near Camp Verde thing another go. We did end up staying in the same spot that we had stayed in on our first visit because we needed the cell service hot spot, good ol computer work and whatnot.

Camp here later Pin it now!

The dispersed camp spots further in along this road are situated in a beautiful desert canyon area. And the further in you go, the closer youll be to the stunning West Clear Creek Wilderness

After dark, there is virtually no traffic and overall camping near Camp Verde was a very peaceful experience. There were lots of lizards around and we could hear coyotes at night which is always awesome. And the stars here were great!!

What a nice campground. While the sites are small they are immaculately landscaped and cared for. Lush foliage everywhere, humming birds, coming doves. Seriously this operation is loved by the owners. Guided to site, awesome help backing into site, great front desk, clean facilities, propane serviceI could go on and on.

We are staying here for a month and I love it. Wide spaces, plenty of trees, and very well groomed. Everyone is friendly and there are frequent social gatherings. The facilities are conveniently located and clean. A nice mile long trail winds through the trees and along a creek. Dog friendly. It is 9 miles from Hwy 17 putting it away from noise. The drive to town is easy. Love it!

    Camp Out In Camp Verde

    by JessicaM | Sep 11, 2018 | Adventure Awaits, Business Showcase |

What a perfect hub for exploring our beautiful valley and state! As a lifelong camper and former full-time RVer, I understand the importance of a good campsite. My husband and I camped our way up to the Canadian border and back to Arizona. We lived in our travel trailer with our dogs for seven months, camping throughout six states. Although I tried to plan and choose the best destinations, its not always easy to research every option. Camp Verde offers what we often struggled to find while out on the road: opportunities to explore secluded, natural beauty with convenient essentials like restaurants, wineries, and a reasonably priced, fully-stocked grocery store. Not to mention the indigenous cliff dwellings, state parks, and national monuments! Whether you have a tent, RV, or need a roof, hopefully this guide to camping in Camp Verde will help you select your very own ideal spot.
