It is a well-known place for different water sports and fishing. You can witness a barge and tugboat with a historical background as the Moro Bay Ferry showcases them.

Best Places To Camp In Arkansas To Check Out In 2021

Camping in Arkansas state offers a wide variety of natural settings to enjoy. The western half of the state is mountainous, including Magazine Mountain at nearly 3,000 feet.

The Boston Mountains are north of the Arkansas River, as is the Ozark Plateau. South of the river there are the Ouachita Mountains and some of the most remarkable drives you can find in the Midwest.

Eastern Arkansas borders on the mighty Mississippi and features Crowleys Ridge, a great stretch for hikers who arent looking for a mountain to climb.

Arkansas is bordered by Louisiana to the south, Tennessee, and Mississippi to the east, Missouri to the north, and Oklahoma and Texas to the west.

While summers can be hot, the nights will cool down nicely, particularly in the mountains. If you can, plan a drive through the Ouachita Mountains in the fall.

Established in 1933, Devils Den State Park is one of the most iconic camping destinations in the state. There are several different types of campsite to choose from, including hike-in tent sites, RV sites with and without hookups, and special equestrian sites that provide access to the park’s horse trails. If you want a little more comfort, you can also stay in one of the park’s rustic riverfront cabins, some of which feature fireplaces, television, and full kitchens. The cabins are available for rent year-round, and a swimming pool and cafe are open on a seasonal basis.

Gunner Pool Recreation Area

Stretching along the scenic North Sylamore Creek, campsites are shady and private but have no electrical or water hook-ups at Gunner Pool Recreation Area. Campsites have grills, tables, lantern poles and tent pads. Trailhead access to Sylamore Hiking Trail is located within the campground. Just minutes away is Blanchard Springs Caverns, where you can enjoy guided walking tours or get down in dirty with a wild cave tour adventure. The peak season at Willow Beach Campground has already started but it does not mean you shouldnt find a place to stay at this natural recreational park. Located very close to the David D.Terry Lock and Dam of the Arkansas River, this campsite is a place to bring your RV or even your tent and enjoy the sounds of nature, the beautiful views, and the easy access to the river.

Only a few steps from the Arkansas River, you can find 21 individual campsites and 3 group sites, although those can only be used during the day. Willow Beach Campground has separate sections away from the camp area with nice covered picnic tables, grills, and electric and water hookups at each spot.

The campsite is relatively small but, normally, not crowded. Great for a getaway week, and -this is one of our favorites- its pet-friendly!

Downtown Riverside RV Park is uniquely located on the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Little Rock. Its proximity to the city center as well as nature provides visitors with a myriad of things to do.

From shopping and dining to museums, live music, and comedy shows at The Joint. Outdoor lovers will appreciate the 15 miles-long Arkansas River Trail, great for both walking and cycling.

Arkansas Campgrounds: Sawmill Ridge

Found in a horse pasture only five miles off the I-40, Sawmill Ridge is a primitive campground on a privately-owned property. Both tents and RVs are welcome, and although there are no hookups, potable water is available at the property owner’s house across the street. There’s also accommodation for horses, and campers are welcome to bring their dogs and have them off-leash The property itself offers more than 15 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and there are plenty more trails in the Ozark National Forest as well, which is only half a mile away.

Operating out of the Gilbert General Store, Buffalo Camping & Canoeing offers a primitive campground three quarters of a mile away from the Buffalo River. Both tent and RV sites are available, and restrooms and showers are available for all guests to use. All sites have a six-person maximum, and campers must book a stay of at least two nights on weekends. The company also offers exciting float trips down the river, and due to the campground’s small size, campers will sometimes be required to book a float trip in order to reserve a campsite.

Lake Ouachita State Park

Lake Ouachita State Park in Mountain Pine is located on the eastern shore of Lake Ouachita, the largest lake in Arkansas. Camping is popular here and the park is currently in the midst of campground renovations. When complete, the total number of campsites available at the park will be 94. Fifty-eight of these are class A sites and 36 are Class D sites.

Surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest, the park is home to hiking trails like the Caddo Bend Trail and is known nationwide for the largemouth bass fishing opportunities found on the lake. Along the shores of Lee Creek in Northwest Arkansas lies Devils Den State Park. One of the original Civilian Conservation Corps parks, Devils Den has been hosting campers for over 80 years. Walk out of your campsite onto miles of beautiful trails past crevices and caves, to overlooks and around massive rock formations. This park hosts trail runs and is home to the oldest mountain bike festival in the state. Backpacking is available on the Butterfield Trail. The park has a seasonal pool, interpretive programs and is famous for Bat-o-Rama held every June. Like many Arkansas State Parks, Devils Den has all kinds of camping including hike-in sites so you can get away from the crowds.

Quite interestingly, around two diamonds are found on a daily basis by tourists. There are hiking trails, picnic spots and campsites with all modern amenities and facilities. So, after a busy day of entertaining activities, have a sound sleep listening to the hymn of the Little Missouri River streaming nearby.

If youre looking for peace, quiet and easy access, Alpine Ridge is a great option. This state park is just southwest of Little Rock. In relation to the other campgrounds on Lake DeGray, this one offers plenty of privacy and quiet.

For RVers, youll be happy to know that access is fairly simple on paved roads, and finding a level site will be pretty quick. Tent campers will enjoy the stay among the trees.

Like all US Army Corps of Engineers, this area is heavily wooded and offers plenty of shade.

Theres a great swimming beach and a boat ramp for getting on the water. If you want to hike into a campsite and rough it, you can find a spot among the trees away from everyone. For those who like a hot shower and a bit more comfort, there are restrooms with showers and fresh drinking water.

Crowleys Ridge State Park

This 291-acre state park in the Arkansas Delta is one of the most popular state parks in the Natural State. Just north of Jonesboro, or just west of Paragould, Crowleys Ridge offers 18 Class B and eight tent campsites. Campers can enjoy the parks picnic areas, trails, and baseball field, as well as exploring the native log and stone structures.

Camp Aldersgate Little Rock

This is rather an institution for specially challenged kids in need of medical assistance. It serves to offer a camping experience for those kids and sometimes for senior citizens who are unable to camp otherwise. During summer camps, kids are encouraged to take parts in various fun outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, canoeing, and scuba diving under special guidance. Kota camps and weekend camps are also there for normal kids.

Sylamore Creek Camp Mountain View

Sylamore Creek Camp offers both RV and tent sites along Sylamore Creek and the Ozark National Forests bluffs. Cool off while swimming in the creek, try your luck fishing, or take a canoe out for a quiet paddle. Lost Maples State Natural Area

The Lost Maples State Natural Area in Vanderpool is hands down the favorite fall destination for Texans. Lone Star State residents have been flocking to the park for years to see the fall foliage. In addition to the gorgeous scenery, the park offers plenty of opportunities for bird watching and hiking on over 10 miles of trails. According to the park’s official Facebook page, the leaves usually start turning in late October. The park tends to fill up fast on weekends in the fall, so make plans to get there early.

For a blissful camping experience, while enjoying the stupendous Ozark Mountain by your side, this is the ideal place in the entire Northwest Arkansas. The entire park has around 146 campsites some of them provide good water and electricity supply and have well-arranged trash, sanitary dumps and sewer hookups. All you need to do is to register beforehand. If you camp during February or March, you may avail water bikes, canoes, and boats.

Woolly Hollow State Park

This state park, around 45 minutes from Little Rock, has 30 updated AAA 50 Amp sites and 10 waterfront tent sites. The new Enders Fault hiking and biking trail will keep campers busy during the day as will a walk around the lake on the scenic Huckleberry trail. Also of note, Lake Bennett was named the best swimming spot in Arkansas by the Weather Channel last year. The park is located at 82 Woolly Hollow Road in Greenbrier. Bull Shoals White River State Park 727%

During hot Summer months, Bull Shoals White River State Park in North Central Arkansas is one of the coolest places to camp. The campground is located just below the Bull Shoals Dam where clear water is fed to the White River from the bottom of the lake making it ice cold. During the day, paddle or fish the river- this is fly-fishing heaven. Or take a hike or mountain bike ride on some of the park trails. Although the park offers high-end RV sites, we like to take advantage of the tent sites just away from the river. At night, a cool fog often rolls across the campground from the river, dropping the temperatures for a perfect night of sleep. Lake Catherine State Park

A peaceful place to pitch your tent, Lake Catherine State Park is located on Lake Catherine and is most notable for its breathtaking waterfall. The park has 20 fully equipped cabins, including one two-bedroom cabin with a patio overlooking the water and private access to the lake from its own fishing pier.
