This Is Why We Steer Clear Of Gander Rv

Gander RV & Outdoors and its parent company, Camping World, might be household names, but we stay far away.

And its not just us.

Many RVers who have been around the industry for a while know better than to try to head into one of their stores and service centers.

We can find the same products and more through online retailers. When were traveling and need parts or service, well support local economies by choosing a local business.

We know well get personalized attention and care and feel much better spending our money on small businesses instead of handing it over to a money-hungry corporation.

Whats your experience with Camping World or Gander RV & Outdoors?

What Should I Be Aware Of When Buying An Rv At Gander

Before you step on the Gander RV sales lot, you need to make sure you lower your expectations. Many former customers share how the sales staff was attentive and helpful but unresponsive once completing the deal. If a salesperson promises anything, make sure you get it in writing before signing anything.

Many people shopping for RVs will use dealers like Gander RV and Camping World as nothing more than showrooms. Theyll walk through the RVs and ask a few questions but have no intentions of closing the deal with them. Theyll take their business to another dealer with a better reputation for customer service.

Camping World Enough Said

We explain why we dropped Camping World in this article, but well sum it up for you here. Camping World has received a ton of negative press over the past several years, in part due to CEO Marcus Lemonis.

Camping World seems to jack up the prices on every product in their stores by 20-30%. Theyll only match online pricing if you sign up for a membership .

These reasons are why we dropped this brand altogether.

Is Gander Rv Going Out Of Business

Camping World Seems To Care More About Money And Business Growth

The overall business plan of Camping World appears to be to lure in those that are new to the burgeoning RV industry. They seem to entice customers, through selling the RV lifestyle, to spend as much money as possible on RVs, purchase additional warranties, and use their financing.

Whats worse is that years after this trend has come to light in the RV community, no changes seem to have been made, and more Camping World locations have opened.

Its fair to say the entire RV manufacturing industry is somewhat to blame. Wed like to see Camping World take the initiative to change the stereotype and deliver high quality RVs and service.

Camping World Is Overpriced

2022 Keystone Passport SL 268BH | Travel Trailer – RV Review: Camping World

If you shop around, you will most likely get better deals elsewhere.

Its easy to imagine that the chain has a higher overhead for their fancy high traffic locations and marketing. As a result, higher prices are passed down to customers.

Often, you can find products priced lower at other stores. For example, Amazon or Walmarts camping sections are usually more economical.

Camping World makes money off of financing, too. This can result in a worse deal than using your own bank or shopping for online financing.

RV salesmens pressure tactics are finely honed to get you to hurry and make large financial decisions. Then they often push add-ons like warranties and accessories.

Camping World To Close Former Gander Mountain Retail Stores By End Of January

Gander RV will continue as a retail brand under the Camping World portfolio, but many former Gander Mountain outdoor lifestyle locations will close by the end of this month.

The owner of Camping World, who once warned West Marine that he was coming to get you, plans to complete the closure of 27 former outdoor retail stores by the end of January as part of a strategy to focus only on the companys recreational vehicle retail outlets.

Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis, also a television personality on the television show Shark Tank, had acquired the retail stores of Gander Outlet and smaller retail chains in 2017 to pursue an outdoor retail-store strategy that would partially compete with West Marine and Bass Pro Shops.

The company announced in September that it would strategically shift away from stores that cannot sell and service RVs. Camping World reiterated that policy in its , saying it planned to close 32 outdoor lifestyle locations by the end of January. It said the restructuring costs would be about $56 million.

Camping World spent around $100 million buying outdoor retailers in 2017 and 2018. But in the first half of 2019, it sold off many of those assets as the RV business slowed down.

Camping World Holdings announced Wednesday it will refocus its retail strategy on its core business of recreational vehicle sales and service, with plans to incorporate the RV business into its Gander Outdoors brand.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marcus A. Lemonis said the Lincolnshire-based company will rebrand its Gander outdoor gear stores into Gander RV and Outdoor and Gander RV, which will operate alongside its flagship Camping World business.

“We believe the sale and/or servicing of recreational vehicles is our core and most important offering and, with the RV and outdoor consumer crossover, we believe there is an opportunity to continue growing our market share and improve our financial performance through the operation of locations with RV sales and/or service and, when feasible, our hunting, fishing and camping products,” Lemonis said.

Camping World has 165 locations across the country that sell or service RVs, with more than 30 RV dealership locations opened or acquired since 2018.

Camping World Pulls Out Will Big Hershey Rv Show Still Go On

While sales of RVs have blasted off as people look for vacation travel alternatives, that doesnt mean that the industry is ignoring the coronavirus pandemic. Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis brought concerns about the virus straight to the fore on Tuesday when he announced his company is pulling out of Americas Largest RV Show in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The annual show is an industry giant, covering more than a million square feet at Hersheys Giant Center, scheduled for September 14 through 20. Lemonis made the announcement via Facebook, and word of the pullout hadnt even reached show organizers they only learned of it when a manufacturer whod heard about the absence passed it along. Heres a quote of Lemonis concerns about doing the show:

As you might imagine, RV shows tend to draw large crowds, with long lines and packed aisles all very exciting, Lemonis said. But in light of COVID-19, it feels irresponsible to subject our associates and our customers to this type of environment. Im concerned not only about the density of crowds, but the travel required to get there. Ive been attending the Hershey RV Show in Harrisburg, Pa., for years and I always look forward to it. But because of the lack of clarity around guidelines, our company Camping World, Gander RV and Good Sam will not be attending.
