Free Camping In The Hurricane Cliffs East Area
To escape the crowds you can head south on Sheep Bridge Rd out of Virgin for 1.75 miles. The dirt road is washboard at times but very doable in all vehicles.
But be warned on mountain bike event weekends the place gets crazy busy and dusty!
Do stop at the information board after a mile to read the rules and look at the camping maps.
The first camping area is to the right and you MUST camp in one of the 9 designated sites.
There are 4 more sites a short drive further south. These sites are larger and I often see more than one RV in each site just be considerate and give your neighbors plenty of space or move along.
About potable water and toilets as shown on the map you can either drive to La Verkin or the first bus stop in Springdale .

Moab Utah: Willow Springs Road
Just about 13 miles northwest of Moab, there is a road out seemingly in the middle of nowhere called Willow Springs Road. This is all BLM land , which is public land. All along this road are campsites that are accessible by car or RV. Once you get about a mile down the road, it gets bumpy and youll need 4WD, but the first mile of it as well as some of the side roads are passable by low clearance cars. The 360 degree views in this area are spectacular, and its a great place to base if you are hanging out in Moab for a while! But be sure you get there early on a weekend, as the sites tend to fill up fast!

Accommodations And Dining Near The Zion National Park
In case the campgrounds are full or you do not want to camp, there are many accommodation options in and around Zion National Park. Within the park, there is Zion National Park Lodge where you are required to do reservations in advance because of its excellent location.
The other accommodation options are in Springdale and they include Holiday Inn Express, Flanigans Inn, Red Rock Inn Cottages, and Cable Mountain lodge. If you need to eat and you cant cook for one reason or another, there are also places where you can take your meals. These eateries include Oscars Café where you are served with nachos and Mexican food, Zion Pizza & Noodle Café, Café Soleil, and Kings Landing Bistro.

Zion Paid Campsite South Campground
South Campground is amidst large and leafy trees that provide shade on hot days and is one of the best in Zion National Park. The campground has 117 campsites that are large enough and well-spaced from each other. This campground is within the park and hence it saves you time. Each campsite is allowed a maximum of 6 people, 2 tents and 1 RV. The campground provides potable water, a dump station, and flush toilets. The campground is open between March 1st and late November.
Have To Use The Bathroom

Plan ahead! Know before you go literally. Backpacker.com has down-to-earth information on their website discussing using the bathroom in the backcountry. There is no shame in being prepared!
To summarize, using the bathroom in the backcountry if there are no facilities:
- Dig a hole and bury your human waste
- Pack out toilet paper and feminine products
- Plan ahead and pack a ziplock with toilet paper and wipes to pack out
We also keep wag bags in the car and our day packs when hiking or camping on public lands where it is required to pack out human waste.
For example, in Glen Canyon Recreation Area and places along the Colorado River or next to the water, you have to pack out human waste along with toilet paper. So always good to have a wag bagwhen duty calls
Since everyone is free to use public lands, we all have to do our part to keep them pristine, clean, and unforgettable.

Near Zion National Park
There are not many free spots to camp just outside of Zion National Park, but there is one spot that seems to be overlooked a lot! On the west side of Zion on Highway 9, there is a sign for the La Verkin Overlook. Down that road, there are about ten campsites down these various roads, and its all BLM Land. The views from the overlook are spectacular! Admittedly, you are 18 miles from the entrance to Zion National Park, but for a free and beautiful campsite, I wouldnt complain!
You really cant go wrong camping in these areas. Proximity to activities, scenic views, and campfires, and all of that at a price tag of free! All of these campsites are accessible and camper friendly for cars, trucks, backpackers, or RVers! Southern Utah is a beautiful place to explore, and I hope to inspire more people to visit the area with these awesome free campsites. So pitch a tent, pull up your RV, or throw your sleeping bag in your car, because southern Utah is where you need to be!

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, which is approximately 40 minutes out from east entrance to the Zion National Park and therefore only 1 hour out from visitor center, is a popular destination for families. Despite the fact that it is not exactly in Zion Park, this modest campground is worth mentioning and visiting in its own right. For those traveling from the east after seeing Zion National Park or for those want to discover a beautiful location away from the more congested national parks, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is indeed an ideal choice.
Its blue skies and magnificent coral pink dunes are flanked by red cliffs & woodlands, making it a spectacular place to visit. Hiking, dune buggy rentals as well as excursions, snowboarding, and a plethora of photo opportunities are all popular activities in these dunes.
They are roomy and surrounded by trees, which provides some seclusion, and each one is equipped with a picnic table and a barbecue grill. Toilets, drinking water, & showers are available at this campground, however there are no hookups available at this location.
Because of the high altitude, even during the summer months, nights might be chilly, so ensure that you bring along some warm pajamas to bed with you!
The park is situated at an altitude of 6,000 feet above sea level. Even though the campground is reasonably protected from the elements, it may be rather windy here.
Reservations are accepted up to four months in ahead of arrival.

This is a FREE campsite. The road in is 4×4 and 5 miles from a paved road. Free dispersed camping on BLM land, La Verkin Creeks Toquerville Falls. Please do not camp at the falls themselves.There are no facilities. There is some private land in the area. Please be respectful of it. This camping area is close to Zion National Park.

Definitely 4 wheel drive and good clearance needed. We picked up a bunch of nails from our campsite which is disappointing. Pack it in and pack it out! The falls are beautiful. Only about 5 feet deep at most so wading more than swimming. There were red and small black ants in our campsite and the rock was hard on our tent stakes.
Gooseberry Mesa & Smithsonian Butte
Before entering the Parks west entrance youll pass through the towns of Virgin and eventually Springdale. Between these, dominating the southern horizon youll find Gooseberry Mesa and Smithsonian Butte. Gooseberry Mesa is well known for its world class mountain biking and Smithsonian Butte for its increasingly popular Back Country Byway. Both of these mesas offer dispersed camping, and if you know where to look, with spots that offer sweeping views across the Virgin River into Zion. Youll need a 4-wheel drive to access this area and youll want to think twice if theres rain in the forecast, as the roads here can quickly become impassable when wet.
