    Youre In The Last Frontier

Im sure its extremely lame to call Alaska The Last Frontier. But at Kenai Fjords, youll feel like youre on the edge of the ocean, high above the equator, dwelling in a place that has required incredible adaptation to survive in. Its this harshness that makes it so beautiful. It feels rugged and adventurous and unregulated in a way that few places in the world still are.

    Kenai Fjords National Park Weather

The birthplace of glaciers and Fjords benefits from subarctic climates. The unpredictable weather of Kenai Fjords National Park alters rapidly. Summer days are rainy and cool, and the temperature changes between 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Long and rainy days are followed by a sunny atmosphere. From June to July, you will see snow remaining in the higher points. Winter months are freezing, and the temperature fluctuates between 30 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.

The first snowfall closed the Exit Glacier area. Although snow and rain are the permanent guests of the park, do not forget to bring sunscreen and sunglasses. Choosing The Right Cruise Experience

Ep. 20 – [Alaska RV Trip] – Exploring Kenai Fjords National Park by Boat

Before we dive into my experience, lets talk about options for seeing the park from the water. The easiest and most common way to see Kenai Fjords is by taking a wildlife viewing day cruise. If you only do one thing in the park, this should be it. Taking a wildlife cruise is the equivalent of driving along the scenic road in any other national park–its the quickest way to see as much of the park as possible, and the views pack a big punch.

Your other option is to sea kayak. Unless you are a strong kayaker or content to stay near the harbor, youll have to take a boat ride to get into the backcountry.

I wanted to do both! Since Im not a very experienced kayaker and am terrible at planning float trips , I knew that I would need to go on a guided excursion for my own safety. I looked at taking a kayaking tour of Resurrection Bay, and also booking a separate wildlife cruise. I really wanted to get deeper into the park than booking both activities separately allowed for, though, and it also wasnt more cost effective to book this way. This led me to ultimately choose to take a combo sea kayak and wildlife cruise tour with Sunny Cove Sea Kayaking.

Spoiler alert: it was money well spent.

You can have the magical opportunity of seeing wildlife in their element. And while both black and grizzly bears call Kenai Fjords National Park home, so do many other animals.

You may see beavers, river otters, mountain goats, lynx, moose, wolves, and 191 species of birds. And we cant forget about the sea animals. You may even catch glimpses of sea lions, killer and humpback whales, sea otters, and much more.

The constant movement of the glaciers here creates a diverse ecosystem within the tidal zones along the varying shorelines. The ice ultimately feeds into the Pacific Ocean, providing nutrients and water for a wide array of wildlife. You wont see any of it if you dont visit.

    Visitor Information

At the Kenai Fjords National Park Information Center, Seward Small Boat Harbor , Seward, AK 99664 , you will find rangers to answer questions about the park and provide information on the all-important tour boats, and a small but handy bookstore. Call or drop by here for advice on public-use cabins for rent in the fjords, guidance on a sea-kayaking expedition there, or information on hikes and trail conditions. They’re open late May through early September daily 8:30am to 7pm, the balance of May and September 9am to 5pm. The center is closed October through April.

    Accommodations & Camping

There are no roads into the main part of the park. The vast majority of visitors base themselves in Seward and tour the park on a day boat. My recommendations for Seward lodgings are earlier in this chapter, including the description of the Exit Glacier Campground, the only campground in the park. But there are options for staying in the fjords themselves. Like most wilderness travel, these choices are either rugged or expensive.
