Herman Long The Pioneer Of Tubing

This campground offering family fun began as a young boys dream. As a young boy, Herman Long would walk this property along the Toccoa River. He would dream that one day he would own it. There was hardly a more beautiful place than where Big Creek and the Toccoa River flow together. Herman married Lois in 1942. Shortly afterwards his boyhood dream came true. He and Lois were able to purchase the property in 1944. As a wedding gift, his in-laws gave him a small Chinese Chestnut tree to plant. You can still see that tree today when checking in.

In the 1950s Herman took a job with the United States Forest Service. He was in charge of building recreation areas and campgrounds in the Blue Ridge area. Some of his work is still here today Morganton Point, Lakewood Landing, Swinging Bridge, Fort Mountain as well as other areas. It was during this time that Herman began to dream of building his own campground. When he retired in 1986, he did just that and named it Toccoa Valley Campground.

As Toccoa Valley Campground began to take shape, Herman pioneered the river tubing business. The Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote an article stating that Toccoa Valley Campground was the oldest tubing company in the state of Georgia. The first tubes were large truck inner tubes. Thankfully our tubes today are more lightweight. Our signature tubes are PINK! They are custom made with a bottom and handles for your comfort.

Looking for family fun, unplug and step back in time?
