National Forests in Mississippi

The Holly Springs National Forest was established by the United States Forest Service on June 15, 1936, during the tenure of United States Department of AgricultureChief Forester Ferdinand A. Silcox. That same year, it was combined administratively with the Bienville, De Soto and Homochitto national forests, known collectively as “National Forests in Mississippi“. The Holly Springs Ranger District controls 155,661 acres of Forest Service land, interspersed with 530,000 acres of privately owned properties, within the national forest’s proclamation zone.

Before the HSNF was established, much of the land was abandoned agricultural land with rapidly eroding soils. These rolling hills are now covered with loblolly and shortleaf pines, and upland hardwoods. The Civilian Conservation Corps used loblolly pine because it was easy to plant, was suitable for the depleted soils of the north central hills, and cast a large load of needles to help prevent further erosion. The land owned by the Forest Service is intermingled with private farms and woodlots. The district ranger for the HSNF is headquartered in Oxford, Mississippi.

In 1983, the Reagan administration proposed auctioning off the entire national forest to private bidders as part of a nationwide asset management program. The plan was largely abandoned.

The Us Forest Service And Dispersed Camping

The U.S. Forest Service manages 154 national forests and 20 grasslands in 44 states across the United States, and in almost all of these, visitors are welcome to set up their camp outside of designated areasprovided camping is not expressly prohibited.

According to the Forest Service, “All National Forest lands are open to camping unless otherwise posted,” which provide certain advantages over the designated campgrounds set up in many national forests including “peace, solitude, and adventure.” However, the Forest Service also advises that there are a few drawbacks to wilderness camping including fire permit requirements, the need to bring or purify water, the possibility of floods, and having to properly dispose of human waste while in the forest.

    Regulations and Recommendations

Forest Service federal regulations are meant to control actions that cause damage to natural resources and facilities, as well as actions that cause unreasonable disturbances or unsafe conditions for visitors. Fortunately, the rules are fairly straightforward and easy to follow, which means you don’t have to do much to enjoy free camping in the national parks:

While this list of regulations is not comprehensive, it covers the basics of camping outside of designated areas. For a complete list of rules and advice from the National Park Service, you can access more information online or at a U.S.F.S. office.

    What Is Blm Land

BLM, or the Bureau of Land Management, is an agency within the US Department of the Interior. They support several different programs on their land holdings including grazing, mining, and recreation. Since were talking about camping, we are going to focus on the recreational holdings within the BLM land system.

Most of the information about dispersed camping in national forests also applies to BLM land, but well be focusing on national forests in this article.

How Do I Find A Dispersed Campsite

Finding a campground is easy when youre looking for developed areas. Here at The Dyrt, we specialize in helping you find campgrounds. Finding spots for dispersed camping is a little different.

Select an area of interest within National Forest Land and use Google Earth in satellite view to check your route for pull-offs. A great idea is to pick a trailhead and look nearby. A dirt pull off or small clearing in a forest is an indicator of an existing camp spot.

Once you have an idea of where youd like to camp, check with the local ranger station on any local camping or fire restrictions. Sometimes, especially during the off-seasons, forest access roads are closed, so check in advance to be sure that your route is clear.

Find BLM campsites from your car without WiFi. The Dyrt PRO lets you download maps and campgrounds without cell service. My alternative to using pro would be to drive back out to cell service.

Its also extremely helpful to have a hard copy map of the national forest youd like to camp in. These are difficult to find online, but you should be able to pick them up at local gas stations, grocery stores, and ranger stations once you reach your destination.

Part of the beauty of dispersed camping is that it isnt advertised on big Camp Here! signs. Finding your spot can take some work, even if you do your research. Its especially difficult to find unmarked camping spots in the dark, so leave yourself plenty of daylight to find your campsite and settle in.

Dispersed camping in national forests is a great way to save money on your outdoor adventures. But it also protects more popular places from overcrowding and damage . Similar to backpacking, youll have to be self-contained and you almost definitely wont have nearby neighbors.

That being said, dispersed camping in national forests typically means parking at a primitive campsite or in a pull-off, just off of a forest access road. So unlike backpacking, you will have your car nearby and you wont have to hike far to set up camp.

If youre interested in exploring a wilder side to camping, this is a good first step. Dispersed camping in national forests might become your new favorite way to sleep outside.

What Can I Expect From Dispersed Campsites In National Forests

Dirt. Trees. Bugs. Views. What more can you ask for?

Free camping in National Forests, or dispersed camping, is about enjoying nature without all the fuss and clutter of amenities, like toilets, showers, and fire pits.

This means you need to arrive fully self-sufficient, and prepared to clean up after yourself thoroughly.

If youre in bear territory, remember that dispersed camping wont come with bear lockers. Bring odor-proof storage for your food, and store food away from your camp.

Since youre camping in a place that hasnt been altered for camping, it typically wont be as flat or clutter-free as traditional campsites. If youre pitching a tent, youll probably want a sleeping pad for added comfort.

    What Is A National Forest

Chewalla Lake Campground in Holly Springs National Forest Mississippi 1 ...

At first glance, national forests and national parks appear to be similar, since they are both public, protected landscapes. However, there are a few differences to be aware of. First and foremost, they are managed by different government entities. National forests are managed by the Department of Agriculture. The USDA Forest Service is charged with upholding the mission of National Forests: to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the land.

National parks often have stricter rules about pets and dispersed camping. The National Forests allow both pets and dispersed camping throughout most of their land holdings.

    Prohibited Items And Activities

Although the U.S.F.S. is typically lenient when it comes to enforcing regulations that don’t harm the environment, there are a few things you cannot bring with you or do while in a National Forest. The following items and activities are prohibited in dispersed camping:

    • Camping or maintaining a campsite for more than 14 consecutive days in a dispersed or non-fee area without having terminated Forest occupancy for a minimum of 10 days within a 31-day time frame
    • Failing to remove all camping equipment or personal property when vacating the site
    • Occupying any portion of the site for anything other than recreation purposes
    • Camping in violation of posted signs
    • Camping within 100 feet of the base of any cliff or the back of any rock shelter
    • Cutting, removing, or otherwise damaging any timber, tree, or other forest product, including special forest products and forest botanical products

If you can avoid breaking any of these rules of dispersed camping, you’re well on your way to a quiet escape from all the noise of civilization in a national forest.
