Understand What It Is Like To Camp In Different Seasons

Now that you understand the basics behind a standard season for camping lets take a closer look at what it is like to camp during different parts of that season. In the next four sections, well give you an idea of what it is like to camp in winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Winter Camping

It is hard to argue against the idea that winter is the worst time of year to go camping. As you may have noticed earlier, many areas do not even include winter as a part of their camping season.

The reasons for this are obvious. In many regions, winter brings unpleasant weather in the form of cold temperatures and snow accumulations. These extreme settings can be harmful and, at times, deadly to campers.

However, that does not mean that camping in winter is a complete impossibility. For instance, if you live in a climate that is warm year-round, winter camping should be no issue. But camping in areas with cold winters is possible as well.

Camping in an RV is one of the most viable options for winter camping as your RV will protect you from the elements. If you dont have an RV, you will need to stock up on some cold weather camping gear before you can ever consider camping in winter.

Spring Camping

Springtime is not our top choice when it comes to camping seasons, but it is up there in the rankings. During spring, the weather is just getting warm enough to be enjoyable.

Summer Camping

Fall Camping

Things To Consider When Choosing What Time Of Year To Go Camping

When choosing what time of year to go camping, there are a few things you will need to think about. We would primarily suggest considering the weather and how willing you are to face various conditions. For example, if youre not someone who likes to traipse through mud and feels miserable when theyre damp, camping in the wet spring months probably isnt the best idea.

Youll also need to think about the campsite rates as these will vary across the year. Peak season during the summer will be considerably more expensive than other times of year. Of course, this also means that the campsites will be busier so youll also want to think about how much company youd like on your trip.

There is the option of camping away from an organised site but youll still need permission from the landowner and to keep in mind that you wont have many of the luxuries you would on a campsite.

With all things considered, you could be forgiven for thinking that the months of June to August would be the best for camping. If you want mostly hot, dry weather then we would agree. However, camping in September is wildly underrated as youll still be almost guaranteed pleasant weather but there will be fewer crowds and better rates. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.

Theres Going To Be A Lot Of Cleaning And Washing After The Trip

Unfortunately theres no much you can do about this one.

Camping is dirty and it will always be like this.

You can still try to:

  • bag the rubbish as you go dont leave everything for the last moment.
  • get everything organized having some storage ideas in mind will help for when its time to go home.
  • see the bright side of things if everything is dirty than it means that somebody had fun doing something.

When Should You Not Go Camping

Busy Season For State Parks

During the summer months, especially June and July, campsites are swarming with campers and family. These months are peak season for camping because children are out of school and the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. Additionally, since most families find it easier to take vacations during the summer, it makes visiting the campgrounds more feasible.

Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend are some of the years busiest times for campgrounds and state parks. This is mostly because students and working adults get the weekend off, and they use their free time to spend the days outdoors, hiking, kayaking, camping, and relaxing in the beautiful weather.

Keep Warm When Camping All Year Round

Camping can be hugely enjoyable all year round, even in winter.

However, its a good idea to ensure youre warm enough at night during the colder months. Feeling the chill as youre trying to drift off to sleep can make for a dismal camping experience.

To keep warm when camping, we recommend:

  • Pitching your tent in a sheltered position, if possible. If your tent is too out in the open, youll be at the mercy of the cold wind.
  • Insulate from the ground up. Your sleeping area requires insulation between you and the ground in order to keep you warm at night. Whilst a ground mat might be adequate in summer, special mats and beds should be used in winter. A mummy-style sleeping bag is recommended when the weather is cold since its more effective at trapping in body heat.
  • Bring additional blankets. You can never have too many blankets when youre camping in the colder months. They can help provide extra insulation at night or even just keep you cosy as you snuggle up around the campfire.

Camping is a joy at any time of the year.

Even though spring and summer are more popular due to the milder weather, particularly for families, camping in the colder months comes with advantages.

Not only can you benefit from quieter campsites, allowing you to avoid the crowds, but you can also experience some of the most incredible scenery later in the year.

You can enjoy the great British countryside at its most beautiful.

When Do Campgrounds Typically Open

What You Really Need for Camping & Backpacking | Essential Gear Guide

You can set up and camp at many campgrounds year-round or only during certain seasons.

Typically, campgrounds open at the beginning of May and stay open through mid-October, although opening dates can vary by the campground.

For example, in the southern states, there is a peak camping season during the winter, but subtropical summers can make setting up camp difficult. In colder climates, campgrounds may not have all the conveniences that you need.

Albertas province is a good example of this. Starting June 1, campgrounds across the province will only be open to Albertans. Shower facilities will remain closed, but you will find that many parks will still be open.

Since there arent any showers in the national parks, there will be fewer cancellations, so booking ahead might be a good idea. Once your campsite is open, be sure to ask about cancellation policies.

While the opening dates of private campgrounds may vary, DEC-run campgrounds typically open a week before Memorial Day Weekend.

Last year, though, the opening dates of DEC campgrounds were staggered 15 opened on June 15, three on June 26, and the rest on July 1. However, privately-run campgrounds may open a few days earlier or may be closed altogether.

You should plan ahead of time and make reservations well in advance.
