Location & Hours

  • Is there wheelchair beach access?

No not really there is a parking lot that is fairly close but as for beach access there is not. Sorry for that but it is a really great place

  • We have a reservation in August for the campground, but it restricts you to 1 vehicle. We have to take two vehicles. Is there a place to park nearby?

Would depend what you mean by vehicle. if just a standard sized one, there is space for two but you have to pay an extra fee–$5 I think–for the second vehicle.

Swimming At Muskegon State Park Beaches

Yes, its possible to swim in Lake Michigan!

Some people may find the water to be cold, but its generally considered possible to swim in Lake Michigan in the summer and tons of people are in the water.

You might expect water temperature to be high 60s in Lake Michigan at Muskegon State Park.

In many ways, because Lake Michigan is pretty big, it can have ocean-like tendencies. Rip currents exist, which means dangers exist, and its important to be aware of this.

There are no lifeguards at Muskegon State Park beaches.

Theres camping available in Muskegon State Park!

There are 2 campgrounds:

  • Channel campground

The Muskegon State Park campgrounds are modern campgrounds, which means theres electricity and hot water showers available. Its for both tent camping and RV camping.

At the Lake Michigan campground, your campsite may be a 15 second walk to the Lake Michigan overlook! The overlook is where youll find the stairs to the beach.

Even if your campsite is a bit further back, it will take just a few minutes of walking to reach the incredible views of Lake Michigan!

Camping reservations

You make your reservations through the Michigan State Parks reservation website. Book sooner rather than later! State park campgrounds on Lake Michigan can fill up in the summer!

Lake Michigan erosion is a thing!

And now

Sunset State Beach Campground Bottom Line

Camping at Sunset State Beach Campground is a sh*tty not a good experience if you camp like we do, looking to get away from people with your significant other and dogs, due to the lack of privacy and the overall constant bustle of the campground. However, with its wide-open campground and visibility across the campground, Sunset State Beach Campground would be good for families camping with kids and large group camps. Also, if you are only camping to get access to the adjacent beach, you could pick a worse campground. Beware, that while dogs are allowed in the campground , they are not allowed on the beach.

The best campsites at Sunset State Beach Campground are located in the Dunes Camp . Campsites 81 86 are not terrible, but are close or within earshot of the bathrooms and showers. All of the campsites along the east side of the campground border are within eyesight of buildings located on the adjacent farms. The South Camp area (campsites 1-37 is largely wide open with little to no separation between campsites.

    Sunset Beach Washington Park

Within the 220-acre Washington Park , there are two beaches. One is West Beach, and the other is Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach is largely used for picnicking and sun-bathing. There are three covered picnic areas, one of which is reservable by calling Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department at 360.293.1918. Additionally, several of the 10 first-come, first-served uncovered picnic tables feature fire pit barbecues and are located right on the beach. The park is well maintained with clean restrooms and nary a piece of litter in sight. A playground is available for kids, and there is a family-friendly hiking network along Fidalgo Head that can be accessed from the beach. A boat launch along the beach is perfect for kayaking trips into the San Juan Islands. Note that while parking is free for passenger cars, there is a fee for parking in the boat trailer area. Visit the City of Anacortes website for updated details regarding periodic closures the park is sometimes used for municipal events.

The Dune Ridge Trail starts from Snug Harbor. I had a paper trail map with me but I went the wrong way anyway.

So Id say be prepared for an adventure.

And be sure to take lots of WATER and SNACKS in case you do end up on the trail longer than expected!

Taking the wrong trail took me directly to the beach.

Side note: For a trip to another state park that includes sand dunes and Lake Michigan, also see about hiking in Hoffmaster State Park, just down the road from Muskegon State Park. And then further up north theres sand dunes hiking in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore!

    A Lake Michigan beach!

I got to Channel Beach unexpectedly by way of the sand dunes, but theres a parking lot here so you can directly drive to it.

This seems to be the main beach of Muskegon State Park, so it can be crowded. There are beach facilities here.
