Lake Michigan Up Camping
Cross the Mackinac Bridge to enter the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Here is where we suggest a slight deviation from Lake Michigan so that you can visit Mackinac Island. If you do not want to cross our bridge, then check out this Lower Michigan Camping Itinerary.
Straights State Park
Straights State Park is technically located in Lake Huron at the northern base of the Mackinac Bridge and offers amazing views of the Mackinac Bridge.
The modern campground has 270 campsites spread out over three areas. sites closer to the water have great views.
Visit Mackinac Island
The ferry terminal for Mackinaw Island is about a mile from Straights State Park. You may be familiar with this island from the movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeves. Its real claim to fame is that it does not allow cars. Horses do a lot of the work that vehicles cannot.
Biking around the island is so much fun. You can bring your own bikes on the ferry or rent them when you arrive. We took our own bikes and rode clockwise, making many stops along the way to check out many great views. Make sure to check out Arch Rock.
The island also offers shopping, great restaurants and fudge, and beautiful views of the surrounding lake.
As you head out of St. Ignace, stop at Lehtos for a pasty.
Hog Island Point State Forest Campground
This primitive campground is right on the shoreline. The 42 sites are first-come, first-serve. Potable water and vault toilets are available.

Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum
There is more to Mackinac Island than just spectacular natural beauty. The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum offers visitors a glimpse of the art inspired by Mackinac through the centuries. The museum’s diverse collection covers a range of art styles and expressions such as hand-beaded clothes made by Native American garments, 17th and 18th century Great Lakes maps, rare and unique decorative pieces from the heyday of the Victorian period and original photos of the island from the 19th and 20th century.
Among the most significant are the works of William H. Gardiner, such as his hand-tinted early-20th century photos. There are four collections that cover Native American Art, historic maps, photos and early 19th century views of the island. The Museum also organizes popular temporary exhibits, contemporary art shows and a kids’ art studio.

Cottage Inn Of Mackinac
Built in 2001, the Cottage Inn of Mackinac is a Victorian-style B& B with 11 distinct rooms and modern comforts. In fact, its the most modern inn on the island and is centrally located downtown, so many activities are a short walk away.

Mackinaw City / Mackinac Island Koa Michigan
Mackinac Island is the most spectacular destination in Michigan, and this KOA is a perfect location to stay. Free shuttles to island ferries available. KOA’s nature trail connects to a paved trail into Mackinaw City, where you can explore Colonial Michilimackinac and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Or continue on the North Western State Trail for miles of hiking/biking. Rent a bike from KOA or bring your own. Use this KOA as a base camp for an easy trip across the Mackinac Bridge to Tahquamenon Falls, Soo Locks and Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Lake Superior. Take a scenic drive through Tunnel of Trees. You’re less than 2 miles from a Lake Michigan beach. After sightseeing, head back to KOA to enjoy the heated pool and a campfire. Wawashkamo Golf Club Mackinac Island Michigan
The Wawashkamo Golf Club sits high on the hills of Mackinac Island. As one of Michigan’s oldest golf courses, the Wawashkamo course has unique features, such as natural hazards, that distinguish it from modern golf courses.
The golf course is open to the public and there is a PGA-certified instructor on hand to coach golfers of all ages. The course and adjoining clubhouse can also be rented for private functions.

The Jewel On Mackinac Island
In the Sunset Forest community on Mackinac Island, The Jewel on Mackinac Island is a three-bedroom, 2.5-bath Airbnb hosted by Jon. The home was built in 2018 on Hole 12 of the Grand Hotels golf course and has a large patio with a gas grill.
The community features biking and walking trails, and a few nearby eateries serve lunch, dinner, and drinks.
Camping On The Island
Boy Scouts and all different types of campers use the Mackinac Island State Campground. This is a wilderness campground, not for people that need comfort zones for camping. This is outside camping on the ground in a tent and sleeping bag. All camping items need to be carried on campers back or in there arms. About 1 1/2 miles to hike from water where you get off the boats. This is uphill. All water is pumped and carried back to campsites.

Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the island so all transportation is done by horse drawn carriage, bike or walking. Great place to go biking and enjoy the land. You can fly kites, go to the beach, take a horse and buggy ride and of course check out the Grand Hotel. Great place to visit.
We always visit Mackinac Island at least twice a year if not more. We were married here in 2012. It’s just one of the most beautiful places in Michigan that you will ever see. Everyone should come to Mackinac Island once and see if it’s for you. It is a gem. The Seabiscuit is probably our absolute favorite place to visit while we are here on the island. You’ve got to try the mac and cheese balls. It is a absolute favorite of ours Sit at the bar and talk to local patrons and say hi to John. Cast for a mimosa or a unique Bloody Mary with a twist. He is very good at what he does and he is very unique. Enjoy your stay .

Historic Mackinac Island on Michigans Upper Peninsula is a fun place to take the entire family. Explore the island via bicycle or on foot via dozens of hiking trails. Or take a carriage tour to get a feel for all the island offers. Visitors can take the ferry back to the mainland to camp for the night since no campgrounds exist on the island. Several nearby towns offer camping within a 15-minute drive of the ferry.

Things To Do On Mackinac Island: Wings Of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory
Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory is a beautiful tropical greenhouse in Surrey Hills on Mackinac Island that provides a home to hundreds of butterflies that roam free between colorful tropical blooms. Stone fountains provide soothing humidity and a pleasant sound of falling water, making the environment as delightful for the butterflies as it is to visitors.
The Conservatory opened its doors in 1997 and moved to its current location in 2002. Their partnership with Carriage Tours makes a stop at the Conservatory a wonderful option for the tourist of Mackinac Island. Over the years, butterflies in the conservatory have been joined by finches, a box turtle called Gennie, a Scarlet McCaw aptly called Mackie J or The Mackinac Jewel, Cammie the chameleon, goats Pierre and Surrey and tree frogs.

Another mile down US23 travelling away from town is a campground called Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground. We rode there on our bicycles.
Frankly, if in the area again, I would camp there instead of Tee Pee Campground.

Mackinac Island Tourist Attractions: Historic Downtown
Downtown Mackinac is home to a range of historic attractions. Guests can stop by the McGulpin House to learn about William McGulpin, a Mackinac Island resident who worked for the American Fur Company. At the American Fur Company Store and the Dr. Beaumont Museum, visitors can discover the story of Alex St. Martin, a Canadian explorer whose injured stomach was used as a testing ground for medical experiments.
The nearby Biddle House is a good spot for learning about domestic life on Mackinac Island, and the adjoining Benjamin Blacksmith Shop is used to teach visitors about blacksmithing techniques.

Mackinac Island State Park
The story of the Mackinac Island State Park is the story of Mackinac Island more than 80 percent of the island is part of the park. Since the park was established in 1895, most of the land has been kept in its natural condition, to be explored and enjoyed as nature intended. The park is covered by a mixed coniferous and hardwood forest which is home to wonderfully fragrant spruce, cedar, paper birch and balsam fir growing on the moist soil, while hardwoods like sugar maple, red oak, hemlock, beech and white pine thrive in better-draining soil.
There are no large animals on the island, but there is a profusion of birds such as ducks, gulls, finches, warblers and sparrows. Squirrels, bats, hares and chipmunks are common and hikers can occasionally spot a red fox, muskrat or a raccoon. Camping and hunting are forbidden on the island, but hiking is highly recommended as there are 70.5 miles of roads and trails. There are no cars in the park, or anywhere on the island, so hiking, biking, horseback riding or horse-drawn carriages are the only way to get around.
