The trail heading up West Fork Oak Creek is the most popular, and with good reason – the red rock walls are a stunning work of art.

    Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive is about a 14 mile drive along Route 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona. It has been recognized as one of the Top 5 Most Scenic Drives in America by Rand McNally. Oak Creek Canyon is a breathtaking stretch of beauty on a winding road that climbs 4,500 feet from Sedona to the top of the Mogollon Rim.

    The scenic drive can ascend the canyon from Sedona or descend from Flagstaff, AZ. Either route is equally breathtaking as you slowly descend or ascend through picturesque forests. The canyon opens to the foliage of oaks interspersed with evergreen pines with the incredible backdrop of red-faced rocks and cliffs in the backdrop.

    Passengers have the viewing advantage. The road is fraught with a few hairpin turns and switchbacks that require the driver’s full attention. In any case, there are many locations along the drive for a chance to park and relish the beauty and enchantment Northern Arizona offers. Be sure to stop at Slide Rock, a popular water recreation spot in the summer.

    What Is Dispersed Camping

    Dispersed camping is essentially free camping on open land, and it comes with its own set of pros and cons. Also known as primitive camping, it is most commonly available on publicly-owned U.S. taxpayer land, also referred to as BLM land .

    You wont find dispersed camping areas anywhere within national parks, city areas, private property, protected wilderness, etc. Camping at a designated campground, for example, is not dispersed camping.     What are the advantages? No crowds, no costs, no formal campgrounds, no reservations. Since they are located outside populated city limits, dispersed camping areas are almost always exponentially more beautiful, remote and exciting to stay atyoure actually having the authentic outdoor experience that you came for . Talk to any experienced outdoorsman, and theyll tell you that dispersed camping is the only option they look for on an adventure.

    With a great experience comes great responsibility. Know your comfort level in the wilderness and choose wisely. The best campsites Ive ever stayed at have ALL been on primitive/BLM land.     Why We Love It: Ranch Sedona RV Park has the ideal location. You can walk to downtown Sedona from your RV and skip the hassle of driving.

    The park offers full hook ups for your RV. They also maintain a high quality park environment with regular landscaping and visible rules. The reviews are mixed some travelers like the rules because it keeps the park under orderothers take offense to the rules.

    The nature vibes are great at Rancho Sedona. With a creek running alongside the grounds and red rock backdrops, youll definitely experience the heart of Sedona!

    Why We Love It: Yes, this park is 20 miles from Sedonaa 30 minute drive. However, its located right in Cottonwood another awesome community.

    Camping at Dead Horse Ranch will give you large sites, clean bathrooms and full hook ups. Theres even a disc golf course on site. Although I havent stayed here, I have jogged through the park many times and really enjoyed the vibe.

    Whats the Word: Zamia Ventures says, We loved being able to hike into the back country directly from our site, while being just a few short miles from charming Old Cottonwood and all the services one could ever need. We camped in the Coopers Hawk Loop, which is set on a ridge above town and offers long views towards the mountains to the southwest.

    East Of Sedona: Off Schnebly Road Near Munds Park

    This free camping spot off of I-17 and Munds Park is a great little spot. Easily accessible off of Schnebly Hill Road, this free dispersed camping area is buried deep in the pines and has great views of Sedona just to the west of the road.

    Just a word of warning, all the free campsites are past the paid campground.

    From camp, you can hike the actual Schnebly Hill Road to Sedona. The road is a rough, forest service road, so driving it is only recommended if you have a high-clearance vehicle. Hiking and mountain biking down Schnebly Hill Road is the way to go.

    Eventually, you will stumble upon the creek bed, waterfalls, and finally Merry-Go-Round Rock. The end of your eight-and-a-half-mile journey will be at the other end of Schnebly Hill Road. Other trails you can take during your stay include Margs Draw Trail and Huckaby Trail.

    All-in-all Schnebly Hill Road is a great place for free dispersed camping if youre looking to hike in Sedona or looking for free camping outside of Flagstaff.

    Oak Creek Canyon camping is a wonderful way to take a break from the summer heat and cool off. Oak Creek Canyon is shaded by towering, red canyon walls and oak trees along a beautiful creek, making Oak Creek Canyon one of the most coveted places to go camping in Arizona. Campsites fill up quickly during peak season and closes during the winter as Oak Creek Canyon is known to get some snow accumulation every now and then but certainly gets cold and icy throughout the winter season. Each campground along Oak Creek Canyon has a nightly fee, but are devloped and all comes with basic facilities such as restrooms, water and fire rings. Some campgrounds accept reservations while others are first-come, first-serve. You may make a reservation where available though the campsite links below.

    Activites available near campsites include fishing, swimming, cliff jumping, hiking and general outdoor exploration. If you are camping, please note that Oak Creek Canyon is extrememly popular. Visitors and campers MUST be considerate of the environment when recreating in this area. DO NOT LEAVE TRASH and use provided toilet facilities when available. Even consider bringing a trash bag with you to pick up other people’s trash left behind when you recreate here. Teach your kids, family and friends outdoor responsibility and enviromental stewardship by example. Walnut Canyon has an incredible way of taking you back in time and putting you in the shoes of those who lived in this part of the country long ago. They lived here from around A.D. 600 until 1400, building their homes into the cliffs that would remain long after they were gone. Can you imagine the ways that they managed to survive? Growing food?
