How To Find Blm Campgrounds And Sites
There are mainly two types of BLM camping styles
- Campgrounds developed camping areas with amenities of some kind! Most are fee-based. Many are first-come-first-serve, meaning you choose an available campsite and pay a nightly fee. Some sites can be pre-booked online
- Dispersed Mostly free. You scout the BLM land and set up camp away from developed campgrounds. As long as you follow the rules for that particular land you can generally stay free for 14 days.
To find developed campgrounds, you have two options:

Experienced campers often go straight to Recreation.gov because they know what they are looking for and how to navigate this useful site! I will write a future article to share tips and tricks!
To find dispersed campsites, the third-party websites mentioned above are your best friends. The dispersed campsites listed on their maps often have fire rings and you can expect these sites to comply with local rules . Unfortunately, when sites are easy to find and listed everywhere they tend to get busy!
Many full-time road warriors use free dispersed camping and their Youtube videos are fun and informative if youre interested. Some say they have not paid for camping in 5 or more years!

Florida Caverns State Park
Just northwest of Tallahassee, enjoy subterranean wonders while camping in Florida! At Florida Caverns State Park, you can visit the only state park that offers cave tours to the public!
At Florida Caverns State Park, youll find 30 single-family campsites. 38 of those have RV hookups, 3 are tent only sites, and 3 double as equestrian campsites!
All the campsites are quite large with many trees offering plenty of shade during the day. Youll find amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, charcoal grills, as well as running water, showers, flush toilets, and a dumpsite.
Take a tour inside the caverns to see limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones, and draperies. If you get claustrophobic, you can enjoy fishing, canoeing, and boating in the nearby Chipola River.
Florida Caverns State Park also has one of the best golf courses in Florida! If you need to work on your short game, hit up the nine-hole golf course right at the crack of dawn.
Reservations are required to camp at Florida Caverns, including a non-refundable $6.70 reservation fee. Camping costs $20 per night which includes water and electricity. There is also a charge for organized groups of 25 at $4 per person.
Can You Camp Anywhere In Florida
The Sunshine State actually provides many opportunities for camping in Florida: state parks, national parks, city parks, beaches, recreational areas, and even private campgrounds. It is important, however, to do your homework before just walking around and setting up a tent!
In most cases, you need a permit. Research how long in advance you will need to obtain that permit for each campsite, as they may be different. Some campsites require you to obtain a permit up to a week in advance, others just a day before you go.
When selecting your campsite, make sure your preferred mode of shelter is allowed! About half of the campgrounds in Florida prohibit tents. Other conversely do not have RV accessibility. Some campgrounds are even accessible by boat!

I hinted at the amazing power of the sun when I mentioned how hot it can get. Make no mistake, the heat is not to be taken lightly, but the sun’s other effects are often doubly overlooked. Again, it might seem obvious, but that blazing ball of fire in the sky is really bright. This means a couple of things. First, you want to see all the beautiful sights that nature has to offer, right? Bring sunglasses. Otherwise, too much of a good thing is definitely a bad thing . Second, bring sunscreen. Vitamin D is good for you and will make you happy. However, sunburn can be nasty and will make you feel nasty as well.

The Best Free Camping In South And Central Florida
Easily some of the most well-known free camping spots are in southern Floridas DuPuis Management Area, which has 16 primitive campsites along with miles of hiking trails, equestrian trails, and ponds for fishing. Campers can stay for 8 days at a time, up to 30 days annually. If youre staying at DuPuis and crave that city life, West Palm Beachs oceanside glamour is less than an hours drive away.
Another popular spot is Lake Panasoffkee in centrally-located Wildwood. You can stay for up to 14 days in this central Florida gem, and even spend a day or two exploring nearby Disney World.
If a shaded, quiet spot in the palm trees sounds heavenly, look no further than remote Hickory Hammock campground in Lorida, or Potts Preserve – Dee River campground in Inverness. Both of these spots offer beautiful, primitive camping in Florida.
There is no free camping in the Florida Keys, but its such a spectacular spot, its worth the splurge on a state park campground or RV park!

Among the campsite amenities, youll find a recreation hall, showers, and restrooms, laundry, dump station, and playground. Campers automatically have free access to the headsprings and tubing area!
When youre not roasting marshmallows around the campfire, Rainbow Springs is one of the best places to beat the Florida heat. Swim in the fresh water of the spring or rent a canoe or kayak. You can even rent tubes to float down the Rainbow River.
If you want to tube, make sure to visit during April through September. Rainbow Springs also hosts the Florida Manatee Festival, one of the best festivals in Florida dedicated to the beautiful wild manatees! Also check out Jazz Up Dunnellon, a music festival in October.

Where To Camp In Americas Oldest City: St Augustine Florida
Two Florida cities, St. Augustine and Pensacola, have recently entered into a contentious debate for the title of Americas oldest city. St. Augustine has long been recognized as the oldest successful European colonization, as it was founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565.
But in 2015, the tip of an ancient olive jar changed the historical narrative about the oldest city in America. The University of West Florida discovered the artifact in Pensacola and dated it back to 1559, making the Spanish colony at Pensacola the oldest city in America by six years. Whichever Florida city is truly the oldest isnt yet known. Hickory Hammock Campground has a five-star rating from Campendium users, and most comment on how the campsites are remote but still have easy access. Again, when its free, its hard to beat! This campground sits in the middle of the state and is fairly popular for those with horses.

Our First Time In Florida By Rv
For the first time in thirteen years of RV travel, we are in Florida. On Jan 2nd, leaving behind bitter cold weather in southern Ontario, we crossed the border at Detroit, turned the RV south and just kept driving.
This is the first of a series of blog posts on what we hope to make into another five-month trip. Our intention is to experience some new adventures in Florida, and then retrace old favorite routes through Texas, Arizona, and Utah.
We had allowed four days for the drive to Kissimmee, Florida to meet up with the “kidults” on Jan 6th. The sun was shining, the roads were bare, the tunes were blasting, and the new Roadtrek provides a smooth comfortable ride so, with little effort, we exceeded our usual miles-per-day. By the time we hit Georgia we were in summer clothes and it was obvious we had time to spare so we slowed things down.
We’d heard about the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta. It’s the largest aquarium in the world. We decided to make it our first fun stop and spent almost five hours there. We only left because they told us we had to . It was absolutely spectacular to say the least!
Admission was not cheap but included entry to every exhibit as well as a first-class dolphin show.
Frugal Parking Tip:
The week didn’t add a cent to our trip’s budget because it was a gift. Instead of the usual Christmas gifts in our family we gave each other this week together.
