Rescued As Downpours Flood Leo Carrillo State Park Campsites In Malibu
Heavy downpours flooded campgrounds at Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu Thursday morning, prompting rescue crews to help nearly two dozen people out of the area.
Los Angeles County Fire Department search and rescue personnel responded around 6 a.m. to the campground, located about 50 feet from the entrance off Pacific Coast Highway.
Due to the severe flooding at Leo Carrillo campground in Malibu along PCH, LA County Fire Departments Search & Rescue Team is rescuing stranded campers with their boat! CHP is on scene for traffic control.

Video recorded before sunrise showed two adults, three children and a dog being led out of the park and taken to a nearby ambulance for treatment.
Vehicles parked in the campground parking lot could be seen surrounded by rushing water.
The National Weather Service says more than 4.5 inches of rain had fallen in the Leo Carrillo area in the past two days.
Video showed at least one other group being led out of the park after the sun came up.
At that point, water could be seen flowing through the campground, where what appeared to be a tent and several camp chairs had been swept away.
In all, 22 people were brought to safety due to the flooding, the City of Malibu tweeted.
It was unclear if anyone was hospitalized as a result of the incident.

Leo Carrillo State Beach: The Complete Guide
Leo Carrillo State Beach is one of Los Angeles’ most scenic beaches, with miles of sand, sea caves, and interesting rock formations. Visitors often rave about how uncrowded it is, compared to beaches further south. The largest beach area at Leo Carrillo is sometimes called North Beacheven though it’s technically on the west end. There are also four coves east of Sequit Point.
The Woolsey Fire burned through the park in late 2018, but it is recovering. As of late 2019, the campground was open, but damaged areas were still being repaired. Beach areas were not affected.
People usually go to Leo Carrillo as a day trip, or they stay for an extended visit, exploring the park and relaxing at the beach. While you are there, you could also visit other Malibu beaches in the area.

Leo Carrillo State Park Campground
Leo Carrillo State Park Campground is northwest of Malibu’s popular Zuma Beach. Carrillo State Park consists of a cluster of pocket beaches off the Pacific Coast Highway. Although the steeply sloped beaches make them dangerous for inexperienced swimmers, the area is still popular for sun bathing, beach strolling, picnicking, surfing, fishing, diving, and kiteboarding.
Leo Carrillo State Park Campground features 130 campsites which can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. The campground has hot showers, a camp store, and a campfire center. Electrical hook-ups for some sites were added in 2015-16. Campsites are well shaded by oaks and offer more privacy than most beach campgrounds to the south. A trail from the campground leads down to the beach. There is also has a Group Camp off the north end of the campground and a Hike & Bike site at the south end.

Hiking Around The Park
There are a few good trails to check out when visiting Leo Carrillo. Notably, the Nicholas Flats trail which winds up a pretty decent ascent to an open flat. We didnt make it to the top of Nicholas Flats on this trip. Im still adjusting to carrying a moderate amount of gear with me, and wanted to save energy for surfing.
We did make it to the top of Willow Creek trail, however, which has a reward of its own. Above the junction between the Nicholas Flats and Willow Creek trails is a vista offering stunning views of the Pacific.

What To Know Before You Go
- Heal the Bay often gives Leo Carrillo State Beach an “A” for water quality, but in some years, it has problems in late spring through early summer.

Dark Skies At Leo Carrillo
Despite being pretty close to civilization, the skies in the Leo Carrillo campground and on the beach are surprisingly dark. Dark enough to capture some good shots of the stars. This was the first real chance I had to try any astro photography with the Tokina 11-16mm, and it went great. Im definitely excited to try this lens out in a darker area.
Relaxing at night and taking some pictures of the stars was a great way to cap off this adventure.

The Malibu Beach RV Park is the only private camping park in the city of Malibu. The park has 142 RV sites and 35 tent sites which either have ocean or mountain views. Leo Carrillo Camping Reservations
As with most campgrounds in Southern California, you will have to book your campsite in Leo Carrillo State Park through Reserve California. Make sure to book your site far in advance, as this campground fills up quite fast, especially during the summer months!
Leo Carrillo State Campground is typically full every single weekend from May to October, without such large crowds during the winter.
If the campsite is booked and you cannot get a site, we recommend checking out Sycamore Canyon Campground or Thornhill Broome Beach Campground. These two options can be found just six miles North of Leo Carrillo State Park on Pacific Coast Highway in Point Mugu State Park.

Canyon Campground In Leo Carrillo State Park
Canyon Campground, the main campground in Leo Carrillo State Park, has 130 sites available for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 31 feet. Mature sycamore trees provide plentiful shade throughout the campground. Campsites are for up to 8 people, 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer. Additional vehicles will be charged an extra fee.
Showers at Canyon Campground have switched to a token system. A one-dollar bill fed into a token machine will produce 2 tokens. There is a camp store available to campers in the campground. Ropes, swings, hammocks or similar items may not be fastened to any plant, tree, fence, or park structure. Firewood is available from the camp host.Campsites can accommodate RVs or trailers up to 31 feet. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. Sites #104 – #133 have electric hook-ups. Nearby is a campfire center. Restrooms have flush toilets.

The Best Leo Carrillo Camping
The Leo Carrillo State Park is a stunning park in California, which is a part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area that preserves 1.5 miles of pristine beach which runs through the park.
Established in 1953, the park was named after actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo who notably served on the State Parks Commission. Leo Carrillo State Park North Beach In Malibu California
North Beach at Leo Carrillo State Park is a wide family friendly and dog friendly beach in western Malibu. It has a large linear day-use parking lot right on the beach.
In between North Beach and Leo Carrillos South Beach there is a rocky area known as Sequit Point which has tide pools and fun caves to explore both are best at low tide. This is a great place for kids to explore with their parents.
North of North Beach the state beach continues to Staircase Beach, a narrow beach that is more remote and popular with surfers.
Leo Carrillo State Park has a large campground and several hiking trails to explore on the hillside. Dogs are allowed on the beach on leash, but look for signs that indicate boundaries of the dog zone.
To get to North Beach, enter at the main state park entrance and follow signs that lead under Pacific Coast Highway to the parking lot. Free parking for North Beach can be found along PCH west of Mulholland Highway.

Campers Evacuated At Leo Carrillo State Park Due To Flooding
MALIBU Campers were evacuated from the Leo Carrillo State Park campground Thursday morning after a nearby creek began flooding from the rain.
Los Angeles County firefighters were able to assist approximately 50 people in leaving the campground.
“We had some campers that were trapped, unable to make it higher ground, due to fast-moving water,” said Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Ron Haralson. “Their vehicles were flooded up to the doors. We were able to assist/rescue 27 people to safety.”
The fire crews were working on a plan to get them out of the area. Ventura County firefighters were assisting L.A. County crews.

David Saul, the owner of Malibu Emergency Preparedness Solutions, captured a video of the rushing water.
Fire crews said there were about 20 trailers at the campsite as of Thursday morning.
No injuries were reported.

Campground And Beach Parking Area Are Closed Through January
Campers and California State Parks employees were caught off-guard last Thursday when a torrent of rain overwhelmed Leo Carrillo State Park campground. 50 people were rescued early Thursday in a downpour that saw five to six inches fall in the north Malibu campground that was charred in 2018s Woolsey Fire.
Flood advisories were issued by the National Weather Service at the end of 2021 for Orange County, but not for Los Angeles or Ventura Counties, said Jerry West, acting Angeles District Superintendent of California State Parks. This event was unanticipated by all parties, West explained.
A closure order is now in effect for Leo Carrillo Campground through the end of the month.
West advised State Parks does not want the public or any lookie-loos around because We have crews working heavy equipment. Were still assessing the conditions.
Most of the campsites along the base of the Arroyo Sequit are completely washed out, buried in two to three feet of deposition or material that has been deposited that was carried by the creek, according to West.
Fortunately, we had the help of Cal Trans and LA County Public Works to come in with heavy equipment to clear muck from the area. However, the Leo Carrillo south beach parking lot past the kiosk is still closed due to the mud covering its access.
